    “Well the sign at the church says I’ll reap what I’m sewing. But I ain’t lost sleep cause it’ll come in due time.”
    He knows his sins will lead him down a bad path where it will all catch up to him but he’s desperate so he has to do it.
    “And if the lord wants to take me then I’m here for the taking cause Hell’s probably better than trying to get by.”
    His life is incredibly hard and he feels like living in Hell everyday would be easier than living another day on his shoes.
    Powerful lyrics right there. That puts into perspective how difficult his life must be. Tyler has a good way with words and this song showcases that well.

  • @savozi
    @savozi Před 4 lety +24

    I think he repeats the first verse at the end to signify the Groundhog Day nature of the work. I also think the the verse about robbing the texaco is potentially a day dream about making money an easier way than he is... and then he snaps out of it, (back to the first verse) back to the hard times.
    Just my thoughts anyway - keep the channel going. So good to see another young guy from the UK loving country, I thought I was the only one lol!

    2 years later and I’m down a Tyler Childers rabbit hole. I want to bring up 2 big things I took from this song.
    1) Repeating the first verse at the end is just a way to show that this cycle repeats itself. Whether it’s the next person down the road or the child he bought a crib for, this cycle of poverty through generations is continued.
    2) “They’ll say I was desperate, they’re probably right.” Adding “probably” here feels intentional. Meaning he didn’t see himself as “desperate.” At least not initially. He’s known hard times since he was born. This is just the way things are. And you do what you have to do to make a dollar. You don’t stop to categorize yourself as “desperate.”

  • @saraseay
    @saraseay Před 3 lety +4

    One of the most heartbreaking things about coal mining is how it represents, in our part of the world, the beginning of being divorced from the land, a departure from the Romantic ideal of agriculture and the ways in which, when you work the land and you rely on the land, then that's when you belong to a place and it belongs to you. When the coal companies came, they really kicked off the cash economy; the change was really hard... culturally and spiritually, because all of a sudden you weren't relying on yourself and your God. You were dependent on the caprices of a board of directors and a company man. And then there was the chestnut blight, and after that you couldn't afford to keep hogs because you couldn't afford to feed them. And then, all of a sudden a man needed a piece of paper that he couldn't even read (a deed) to say that he owned his own house.

    Stopped by after your reply in the other video, man, this song hits hard. I always seem to stumble across it because it’s not on his albums that I have, so when I do listen it just creeps up. The story that revolves around doing something drastic just to make a little more money, circling back to acting like nothing happened and going back to look for work is just far to real. It’s almost haunting, especially since I have plenty of guys I’ve worked with in jail now just trying to provide or get caught up. And when they get out, it’s right back to looking for work. A song very similar to this to check out on your own would be Bleu Edmonson’s “Finger on the Trigger.” Almost a similar story! But man, I’m excited for your line up this week, especially Koe Wetzel. I’m excited to see your reaction to his stuff!!! I’ll continue to keep coming around brother! Cheers!

    The south east, specifically Appalachian mountain area has been exploited since the founding of this young country. Mostly scotch - irish. We where asked by Washington to fight the revolution war with the tactics learned from the natives we set this country free. Washington turned around and thanked us by taxing home made liquor. We turned that into a global sport by building fast cars that looked stock, running from the law. Now once again with corporate sponsored stolen Valor we're forgotten. Coal mines of the future. All we want is to enjoy this mountain view and raise or family in pride. It's easier to land a habit than a job here. Regardless of what they say, the rarities of these hill's ain't even been tapped yet. It's hard times but the view is amazing here.

    In KC, Missouri/ CST I’d likely watch most at about 6 or 7 pm
    In this performance of Hard Times, look at his clothes. If he was a Nashville star I’d say that was some aashat publicist’s idea.
    Tho he wasn’t nearly as that big then. imo the tore up boots and his outfit are clearly work worn. It made me pay as close attention to the keys he uses to sing in being as real. His mournful voice tells only truth about addiction and poverty as well as the deep love for life and his wife. Love it
    PS speaking of killer lines, which tune does he sings about a woman cooking “who ain’t had meat in years”

Kids in their 20s and even younger end up pregnant, unready, unskilled, no work available to them, scared out of their minds. While I believe family, the clan, should stick together, it’s still a blow to your pride when you turn to them for help with problems like that.

    Listen to Koe Wetzel if you want different types of country. Koe plays more of a country rock or outlaw country, rather than traditional country. I recommend “Too High to Cry”, “Forever”, or “February 28th, 2016”.

    What I get from the song is, when he goes to look for work but does not succeed he may have to hold up a Texaco station because he is desperate. That’s why he ended with the start?

    Give Parker McCollum a shot. Popular Texas guy. I Can't Breathe, Hell of a Year, and Like a Cowboy are some of his popular (and good) songs.

    Childers has a really interesting & beautiful cover of "Time" by Pink Floyd that leads into a bluegrass song he co-wrote called Harlan Road. As an American it was definitely surprising to see a country star cover a Pink Floyd classic, would be interested in your take on it from the other side of the pond.
