My God, people. This was live on morning TV, which I'm sure none of them had enough sleep the night before, the microphones the studio had were for talking, not for vocals, the sound engineers were not experienced with bands playing, let alone multiple vocals. The song we're all familiar with was recorded in a studio with twice as many voices as the three of them, with reverb, compressors, correct and expensive microphones, yadda yadda yadda. You can't judge a live performance of three voices against an iconic song with six vocals and many of them doubled for thickness of sound. Personally, I think this was a kick ass performance, even with everything against them.
Make all the excuses you want for this but they sound like shit all the time. If not for the Phillips & Cass back in the 60's we would never have heard this bad mix.
Those aren't excuses. Those are all examples of how daytime TV isn't really musician friendly. I guess you are just going to hate this second generation group, so anything I say otherwise is wasted. Have a nice day.

I love this song but this production of it could use more musical dynamism. Needs flute, as per the orig, and a pair of boy sopranos lightening up the harmonies.

It's too bad Mama Cass and Denny (both dead) never had any children, at least not those who were willing to join up with Chynna, Carnie and Wendy in the mid-1980s.
I forgot to mention that I say all that as someone who was raised in church too lol. I still hold true to what I believe in without forcing it on people but I really think that some people need to lighten up. And do their research. To make a fuss over the what the reporter thought was what he heard all his life in one line to hearing the actual thing was not how it was sung over one word "pretend" over "began". I know plenty of people who pretend to pray in church.

Most of the issue with this is caused by the shitty TV station sound engineers. Chynna's voice was too loud, the mics they were using seemed more suited to voice over as they tended to make their voices mushy and uncrisp. Generally, the production side of it made this crappy, not the singing.

Phillips should maybe not be singing lead. Carnie Wilson is much better on Monday Monday on this 2012 album....However, the sound quality is terrible so they are not helping these girls at all...The sound quality is much to blame...The harmony vocals and actually much better than the original album as Mamas and papas were always out of tune
