- When you think of 1960s folk music, you can’t leave out The Mamas and the Papas. Consisting of John and Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty, and of course, Mama Cass, it’s hard to believe that a group only together from 1965 to ‘68, could become such a vital part of music history. Yet despite the widespread success, it couldn’t prevent the group from behind-the-scenes tension that included affairs, break-ups, and copious amounts of substance abuse.
I’m Nostalgic Nick with DoYouRemember, and today we’re taking a deep dive into The Mamas and the Papas, seeing what led them together in the mid sixties, and what they all did after the split. I believe Cass Elliot was the most "genuine" or "sincere" person of the four. She was ridiculed and mocked because of her weight, which is a shame for sure. But it was not her physical presence that made her awesome, it was her personality and her character.
She never gave up on her dream, even in the face of adversity. She was unique and very much one of a kind.
She had the best voice of the group. From Ms. Harper Stacey.

I wasn't born until 1969, yet as a child I grew up listening to their first album. I've loved Mamma Cass since and somehow feel a kind of efinity with her. Strange that!
Cass had a great voice, I put her up there with Karen Carpenter and Judith Durham of the Seekers
Her problem was she was in love with a guy who found fat women repulsive.

Now nearly 80 years old, I can still say I liked everything they sang, but I considered Cass Elliot to be the most talented vocalist of the group. I rank her with Peggy Lee, Linda Rodstat, and Carly Simon. Cass Elliot was a unique vocalist. What a lost when she died.

I met Cass while we both waited to be called at a hospital. I was just a young child but knew who she was.
The wait was long, she entertained me and let me sit in her lap as she cuddled me. Thinking now that was about a year before she passed. Will never be a voice like hers again.

Cass was a great singer, but also gifted in her smarts, personality and grace on stage. People loved her.

Cass was the most well-known of the group.
I grew up with Denny, in the North End of Halifax. As young lads we belonged to a boys choir at St. Joesph Church, which no longer exist. I joined the army at 17 and became a Physical Training Instructor. When I returned from Germany, I learned of Denny being with a group called Mama & Popas. I never did get to see the group or Denny again. I’m 81 now, and have also been in music all of my life. And I still perform. I’m a crooner and still have a powerful voice! RIP, my friend!

I met The Mamas & the Papas one week after they displace The Beatles who had occupied the number one hit song in the United States for six consecutive months before The Mamas & the Papas move them out with California Dreaming! They were at a New York City Hotel and one of my friends in the college in Connecticut was friends with several of the people around The Mamas & the Papas. We drove down from Connecticut and there were about a dozen people in a line to greet The Mamas & the Papas. The first member out was John and I said congratulations upon your career. It appeared as so he was looking at my aura over my head. He then went on and Michelle came on. I repeated the congratulations on your career and she looked at me with amazement in her eyes as to how her life had changed. Then came Denny. Next came Cass. She looked marvelous in a white sweater and must have lost close to a hundred pounds! But my attention was diverted as I said hi cass, as I had to look down and away and I heard her disappointment in losing my attention has she sounded like a little girl who was denied something. Later on I was at Denny's house and it was not a good house for him. He was not happy and the house was a traditional Beverly Hills High ceiling house with one small colored glass window. He needed lightness and brightness. I could not help him and left soon after. Joel boyes Hot Springs Northern California.
"California Dreamin'" is a timeless classic, but "I Saw Her Again" is my favorite.
California Dreaming congers up memories that will live forever in my
mind.
Whenever I am in Tenerife in winter, far away from the cold and dark of the UK, I love to listen to "California dreaming" on my MP3 player while walking along the beach under a nice warm sun and blue skies eating an ice cream.

She blew the other three right off of that stage with magnificent plus gorgeous voice of hers! In later interviews you can see and hear the jealousy Michelle Philips had for her. She never talked about her voice, only her weight.
'Funny, the song that always got me hooked when I was a kid? Songs like Cass Elliot's voice was "Words of Love" ( I can no longer remember what was on the other side of the 45), but the richness of her voice in that song stole my heart and I knew she was a maestro (technically "maestra"?) I can still sing"Monday, Monday" with friends that wanna sing harmony, but it is ALWAYS Cass Elliot's vocals in that song that make the rafters shake.
David Crosby said in an interview that Cass was kind, generous and like a mama to everyone. Back in the day when everyone was starting out and living hand to mouth, Cass was the one who had a few dollars to spare to help someone out. She let people sleep on her sofa, she made sure no one was going hungry. You could tell he loved her.
That's great to hear, I absolutely love her solo stuff as well. I've always loved Cass. Legends never die !!

He writes how he freebased his way broke, in huge debt, and only through the generosity of others did he not end up homeless. He also mooched a free liver transplant paid for by Phil Collins. And later got busted for drugs again. Those are the nicer things I can think to say about him.
Mama Cass had such a positive, upbeat spirit and personality. Perfect for the flowery late 60s and early 70s.

Cass had the purest, crystalline, most angelic voice I have ever heard. It's terribly sad that groups like this who give millions so much pleasure seem to eventually fall victim to personal and physical problems. They were a fond part of my formative years which will stay with me forever.

I love the sound of the 60s .it reminds me of how pure the world was compared to today. I loved the movie Once Upon A-Time In Hollywood. I was only a child in the 60s but I wished I was an adult. Everything was exciting and new. Unless you lived in USA and black. It was a horrid time for them, my heart breaks for how they were treated

My favourite in the band was Cass Elliot. She seems like the most genuine as many others also has written in the comments. She seemed like a nice person, with the biggest heart. People we're very cruel. She had a great voice and a great look. She was one of a kind. I like her moves and her dance. Just look at "Dancing in the street"! She had so much talent, more than the rest of the group put together. Rest in peace you beautiful woman. My favorite songs in "Monday monday", "California dreamin" and "Creaque alley", and their version of "Dancing in the street"! I also like her solo songs, "Dream a little dream on me"! Take a look at Cass and Sammy Davis Jr then they singing "I dig rock n roll music". That's also very good!

Their blended voices were fantastic. But Cass was the only one who managed a solo career. Her voice was unique.

I still say in my opinion Cass was and still is one of the most beautiful celebrities ever. My heart melts every time I watch the video of dream a little dream of me.

My oldest sister met the group at a club in Detroit. I was a star-struck child and she got Denny to sign a cloth napkin for me. He wrote, "The price of coal is down, Debbie, and you have a very nice sister." I still have it!!

There’s something about it that seems timeless from the instrumental parts to the harmonies , the simple lyrics and Denny’s amazing lead.

Always loved the Mamas & the Papas ever since I first heard California Dreamin' on the radio in the bleak UK winter of 1966. At that time going to California WAS the dream for many English teens, but flying there in those days was prohibitively expensive & not a realistic option for your average permanently broke teenager! The extraordinary emotional clout that song carries resonates to this day, and still fills me with a yearning for California! My other favourite song of theirs is Creeque Alley, a wonderful piece of 'storytelling songwriting' full of fun & whimsy that I never tire of hearing.
I love listening to "California dreaming" in Tenerife, watching the surfing at Las Americas, far from the cold and dark of the UK, for me, it's the quintessential 60s song and I usually listen to it three or four times in secession even after all these years.
I am 77 and was in my early 20’s and just married when their unbelievable harmony separated them from all other groups (mostly the English Invasion) of that time.
Even my dear Mother who loved Glenn Miller and the 40’s Big Band era appreciated their unique harmony.

I think she was a better person too. I saw an interview and Michelle was quite cruel toward her step daughter I thought. Beauty isn't always on the outside. Either way they were a great and talented band.

Cass not only had talent and most real defying the image of what is beautiful she was beautiful and unique as we all are was the most real and reliable of the group and the most loved by the fans. Without her the group would of fell apart sooner but in the end let her down.

Cass Elliot was always my favorite. She was also responsible for bringing together Crosby, Stills & Nash. She was a great talent and I was truly heartbroken when she passed away.

One of greatest groups of the 60s, they were just spectacular, especially Mama Cass.
I just turned 69 not long ago and their music was popular when I was in high school. Each of the great harmonies of their songs seems to remind me of a time and place. In my book they will go down as one of the best folk rock groups of all time. Denny wrote just dynamite musical compositions. From time to time I catch myself whistling one of their tunes to this day!

1965. My first year in the Canadian Air Force, and I was only 17. California Dreamin' still brings back the memories of my youth and the hopes of having a life they sang about. I am 73 now. I loved them so much and the hopeful times they represented that I can still play that song in my mind. Those were the days my friend. I thought they'd never end... God Bless America. I have a question - I wasn't born yet for the 60's, but listening to music of the era, I wondered if Spanky And His Gang were a competing band to the Mamas/Papas? Which came first? Was it a trend to capture that harmony sound during that era, as bands tend to want to sound like another band(?)
Ok Boomer....(Just kidding). You guys really did live to see some amazing times and social changes that are still bearing fruit, even after all these years. And the music...holy hell, the music! Gen X here(1975), even from a very young age, California Dreamin' has been my favorite song. Up through the '80s and Metal, past the '90s and Grunge, I always come back to this song and this time. It's almost a spiritual thing for me at this point, in that it makes me miss a era that wasn't even alive to see.

I was just in elementary school; but my older sister (10 years older) always listened to the Mamas and the Papas. Cass lead that band. Her vocals were similar to Streisand and Midler. She should have been given top billing and she is sorely missed. Edit: Had it been a different era; weight wouldn't be an issue and she would be a super-star. My condolences to her daughter; you had a wonderfully talented mother like no other.

I was a teenager in the 60's when those songs first came out. I look at teenagers today, and it just shows how lucky I was in comparison. We had a free country, great music, and everyone born in the decades after, missed out on ALL of it. A greatness our country has been far from for decades.

I was a kid in the 60's but I agree completely. Young people today have no idea what a fantastic place this country was back in the day. I am not on a downer with this - it's just the way things are.
I’m a teenager today and I totally feel like I missed out on the 60s. The worst part is that I live in the Bay Area and SF was practically the center of the hippie movement. What it must’ve been like to be 18 during the summer of love…

Lou Adler is uncredited fifth member who produced the timbre that puts their recordings on an exciting par. The early 20's age and sixties vibe give us fans a rush every time I hear them. Magical! And John Phillips was a genius arranger/songwriter until drug use brought him down.
Momma Cass had one of the most awesome voices and wow could she sing . I till this day still enjoy listening to the mama;s and the Papa"s takes me back to my childhood filled with good memories . And Cass and her Solos were above awesome . They were the best.

Cass Elliot was a natural Alto voice and could also even sing some Baritone parts. Altos do stand out because they are rare. But to me, her real gift was singing harmony. I think she could harmonize with ANYONE.

For me Cass stands out from all 4. I love tracking her unique voice while listening to their harmonies. Without her the M&P songs wouldn't have been so catchy.

Marrettus ~ I was 11 years old when 'California Dreamin' came out so I remember it, only i was born in freezing England - this song along with "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)" by Scott MacKenzie literally had me dreaming of the Hippy Life in California & still to this day they give me that content feeling✌️PEACE & LOVE

I wasn't born until '76, but I enjoy "California Dreamin'" the best. I love that song because it puts me in the mind of taking a brisk walk with leaves crunching beneath my feet (one of my favorite parts of fall and winter). It just transports me, however briefly, to a moment in time that I never lived in.

My family moved to Lemon Grove, CA near San Diego in 1966. Previously we had lived in Clarksville, TN for ten years. I fell in love with the laid back vibe of CA and the year round warm weather. When my father returned from Vietnam in 1967 he was transfered to Fort Benning, GA. Back to cold miserable winters. I will have to say my favorite singer of the group is Mama Cass. California dreaming did become a reality for me. Forty six years later I still miss the California mild weather and the laid back attitude of my dear friends! Everytime I hear California Dreaming on my car radio, I am transported back to 1967 and it feels goooood!! Darrell from Ozark, Alabama.

I loved them. They had tha t great 60s vibe, and 60s harmonies. Michelle was so cute, her high harmony spot on.They made it to the top. You cant stay there.
this group, together for such a short time, and "handicapped by substance abuse", and internal conflicts, made some of the most beautiful music I remember from the 1960's, of which many of their songs are now classics.
Philips might've have sunken into degeneracy with his own daughter, which was inexcusable, if it's true, but he wrote some of the very best most beautiful songs of the 1960's. Every time I hear California Dreamin', 12:30, Monday Monday, Go Where You Wanna' Go, I saw Her Again, in fact mostly all of their songs, I just have to stop and listen, and their songs take me back to a younger, happier, more innocent, and the less burdened time of my youth.

@@greenmanalishi6086 Ann Wilson wasn't always fat. She was very pretty in her younger years. But she could still belt out some beautiful songs, especially Stairway by Zeppelin. In fact both Ann & Nancy Wilson could play & sing a lot of Zeppelin songs. Great White could play Zeppelin too.
I will always have a special place in my heart for mama Cass, because she reminds me of my own mama. My mom is up there singing with her right now, and probably rolling a big fat one.❤😂

All the things you hear now about the different groups spoils memories of what we all thought was a magical period.
Cass' voice outshines them all! John's writing created some of the most memorable tunes. I think Monday, Monday and Dream a Little Dream of Me are my favorites but they have several toe-tapping tunes that I love.
A great legacy. Love Mama Cass solo stuff as well, including "Dream a little dream of me" and "Make your own kind of music".
"Make your own kind of music" is one of the greatest songs ever, along with "New world coming" and I never get tired of listening to them.

OMG, Michelle Phillips. What a goddess. I always liked their music but realised later in life that I absolutely loved it. California Dreaming is a masterpiece and written on a cold day in NY while John and Michelle took a stroll. Amazing! This awesome foursome sums up my teenage years and brings back so many happy memories.

That's not what Papa John said. He said he thought of the song and woke up Michelle to write it down for her, as she grumbled about being woken up. But he gave her half of the songwriting credits which no doubt made her a lot of money for a few minutes of dictation.

Despite the turbulent personal interactions, the harmony of their music was one of the best in folk-rock in my opinion.
I prefer to remember them for their wonderful music rather than all the negative things you brought up. I remember sitting in the barracks in 1966 and listening to Monday Monday. Good memories. Mama Cass was great!
Same here, basic training Ft. Polk La. It was a hell hole in July!
