Whoever was behind the sound for the Mongol invasions, well done. I actually felt afraid seeing those red arrows and hearing those horns.

No, no, no, just commented as a viewer, there was no crossover. :-)

Hello again Kings&Generals good to see you here.
Kings and Generals hallo :D
That mongol horde looked bad ass and scary at the same time
kareem hashimi more like a natural disaster than an army.
Horde comes from word Urdu/Ordo. Meaning army.
Turko-mongolic in origin.
Turkish military's war college is called Urdu (college). In EU4 turkish infantry regiments are named something like "ordusu"
Afghanistan's army is called afghan milli Urdu, afghan national army,
State language of Pakistan is called Urdu, from "Urdu=i=Mu'alla' (High Urdu), language of the mughal officer class of mixed origins.
It was just unstoppable for any of the Russian principalities or any nomadic tribes it met before. In a matter of fact Mongolian Empire just absorbed a vast nomadic population of Central Asian and what is now Southern Russian steppes. The only reason Mongol invasion did not come further to the Europe is that they simultaneously ran out of nomads to absorb (and recruit replacement for the fighting force from) and really good landscape to feed horses (well, those two factors are obviously connected). But since 14th century nd up to late 15th century Russians did not consider Mongols as an enemy at all. All the Russian military efforts were put to oppose Lithuania, Poland, Livonian Order and so on. Simply because it was doable and opposing Mongols was not.
براہمداغ yes we called ordu=army ordusu=his army
@@comNartheus Nazarikov from Nazar more like Tatar surname not slavic
This time and region is criminally underrepresented in popular history. You have Europe's last pagans fighting German and Scandinavian knights fighting former Scandinavian vikings turned Orthodox Christian aristocrats fighting Mongols fighting Poles fighting still pagan Lithuanians fighting bears! What not to like about it?
There are no Americans or Brits in it. Plus eastern Europeans would have to be portrayed as the "good guys" and we can't have that in Hollywood.
except when they are fighting nazis
Pretty much all slavic regions seem to be all but forgotten in general european history.
I guess there's still residue of the old "those are just barbarians"-thinking.
Nothing important happened
On the bright side, Peter the Great westernized and modernisation of Russia paid off.
Very impressive beard for a 16 year old.

Oblivion Almost every faction/people group spreads like a virus if given the opportunity, the mongols just did it the best.
Yeah I legit felt scared watching that
This battle was portrayed in the 1938 film "Alexander Nevsky" by the extremely influential film maker, Sergei Eisenstein. The song used for the battle is also really great. "Battle on the Ice" by Sergei Prokofiev.
Yes!..Saw it on PBS as a kid in the 70's.
A very inaccurate portrayal, to be sure. Still a great work of cinema, and extremely effective Soviet propaganda.
my only knowledge of this battle prior to watching this video was from the movie "Alexander Nevsky" directed by Sergei Eisenstein, with wonderful musical score by Sergei Prokofiev. I already knew the music before I ever saw the movie, because of my roommate second semester freshman year at Purdue University, who opened my eyes to an incredible diversity of wonderful music. He was a remarkable guy, and I'm so grateful to him).
but then at the end of that year I transferred to the University of Michigan, which had a lot more opportunities for cultural experiences, including several film series, which showed classic films essentially every night of the week. This was how I was able finally to see Alexander Nevsky, which I saw multiple times.
Alexander Nevsky had a lot of anti-christian imagery, as the prevailing communist government in the Soviet Union at the time the movie was made was trying to undermine the influence of the church (You know, religion being the opiate of the people, and all that). So during the Battle on the Ice, when the Teutonic Knights were in the process of being defeated, there were images of Christian crosses falling before Alexander Nevsky's sword.
but the most memorable part of the film was when the Teutonic Knights and their horses were so heavy that they began to break through the ice and fall to their death by drowning. It was almost like an Act of God, except that it obviously couldn't have been the Christian God who was responsible. Perhaps it was the spirit of Karl Marx (although he would not be born for another 600 years). I don't know!
In any case, I was stunned to get to the end of the present video with nary a mention of the Teutonic Knights breaking through the ice and drowning. What??!! Am I to understand that this is just a myth, like Pharaoh's army drowning in the Red Sea? Someone please tell me that this detail was simply omitted accidentally.
And am I to suppose that there was no baby carriage careering down the Odessa steps during the mutiny of the Battleship Potemkin as well??!!
In any case, I recommend Prokofiev's magnificent score to anyone.
@@MendTheWorld somewhere in a box I have the soundtrack on a cassette......It was outstanding music.....
@@MendTheWorld I don’t understand where you saw anti-Christian propaganda in the film, especially when you consider that at the end in the scene of triumph, Orthodox churches and Russian banners with Jesus Christ and Archangels shown there. Eisenstein's film is pure anti-fascist (anti-Nazi) propaganda, you can watch the swastika on the clothes of German bishops, and the helmets of German infantry are very similar to the helmets of Wehrmacht soldiers. The crusaders in the film are represented as typical pseudo religious invaders, for whom religion is just a cover for their predatory policies, they were dangerous cultural and existential threat of medieval Russia.
Incidentally, the operation of Barbarossa was supported by many in Europe as a crusade against atheists and Jewish Bolsheviks, including by the Pope and Catholic church. And i’m not even talking about the inscriptions on the belts of Nazis soldiers "Gott mit Uns" (God is with us), which did not stop them from commiting their atrocities and crimes against the Soviet people and did not help them win.
By and large, this film is not about the events of the medieval history of Russia, but about the events that will happen a little later, in 1941-1945. This is symbolic (and yes, in many respects, propagandistic) cinema, which foresaw further events. Therefore, the film itself can be perceived as a historical monument of the Great Patriotic War (World War II).
P.S. In addition, I did not find any falling crosses from the sword of Alexander, there is only one scene with a Teutonic camp falling at the hands of militias, on the roof of which there was a cross. If you are talking about crosses depicted on the armor and shields of the crusaders, then all claims and questions to them, and not to Eisenstein.
Your elocution, while always splendid, just reached a new pinnacle of excellence with how you said 'camping Swedes'.

- Principality of Pskov
Ah seasonal crusaders. Their migration is so beautiful and harrowing.
Erdenesaikhan Amarsaikhan And there you can find a crusader calling for its mate, as it is mating season. > The Camera turns to a Crusader in full chain mail armour screaming at the top of his lungs:"Deus Vult! Deus Vult!".
After hearing the passionate call of the young Teuton, the Livonian knight carefully inches his way towards him so as to ascertain his interest in purging heresy from Eastern Europe.
Khan of Khans Spotting the Livonian Knight and recognizing a mate, the Teuton strides towards the backside of its mate and whispers in its ear:"I heard you need help with pagans." This arouses the Livonian immensely.
The Teuton and the Livonian thus begin an elaborate mating ritual that involves penetrating the lands of heathens, delivering a deadly thrust to pagan power and the forceful conversion of local populations.
Khan of Khans Then they were rudely interrupted by Novogorodian Princes. The Teuton tries to attack but midway sets up camp giving the Novogorodians to easily send him back. The Livonian is in shock and rallies forces only to be vanquished by a raiding party 5,000 men strong.
The mongol invasion scenes was far more scary than any horror film

The mongols didn't document anything really, so all me know about them is what others wrote.
and since they won the battles...
we are technically, genetically, a part of the mongol race since genghis eradicated the adult male population. And yeah, the winners write the history, and genghis is not in there really, except for the reputation, because he assimilated all of his tribes into other coutries cultures...and so we just dont really know HOW he did what he did.
It would be difficult, for example, to find a modern homo sapiens without genghis khan genes.
Anyone care to comment on the ''mongolian flap''?

You could talk about the Battle of Sun battle where some Lithuanian tribes and Latvian tribes attacked the Livonian order

I studied this stuff in school and several times in university, but never have I been able to comprehend these events in their entirety, untill your video. Yo make an excellent job of explaining history. In school books it's just like: "He went there and captured Koporye in so-and-so year. Than he captured Pskov in so-and-so year." But they have never showed us all the "why's" and even the simplest causality of these events. This 15 minute video have more educational value than a week of school curriculum. Thank you!

Today is the 780th anniversary of the Battle on the Ice!
I learned about this a long time ago when I was at music school, and I bought a CD of Prokofiev's music because I loved Russian music. It had a recording of the soundtrack from "Alexander Nevsky.' I made the librarian go into the basement and dig the movie out using an old projector in a little room. :D I spent a lot of time reading about Russian history back then.

Update & Hyped for this!
“Whatever doubts his lords might nurse, the common men seemed to have faith in their king. Stannis had smashed Mance Rayder’s wildlings at the Wall and cleaned Asha and her ironborn out of Deepwood Motte; he was Robert’s brother, victor in a famous sea battle off Fair Isle, the man who had held Storm’s End all through Robert’s Rebellion. And he bore a hero’s sword, the enchanted blade Lightbringer, whose glow lit up the night.” - ADWD, Chapter 42, The King’s Prize
What did ugly bastard of dreadfort know anything? The prince who was promised at ice wall.
#NightLamp
If you think about it, the Mongols are the White Walkers, the Teutonic order is the Lannister Dynasty
@@duckboiii4441
Wildlings: refugees from eastern Europe (escaping from White Walkers like Ruthenians and Balts from Mongols and German orders to Poland or Hungary)
White Walkers: Mongols attacking every village or city on they road
Stannis with his army: prince Aleksander and his army prepearing to fight with the Order
Freys: Germans
(And comparing great houses like Lannisters to some dynsties or orders is pointless because situation like Game of Thrones were in many countries in medieval if country was breakdown of the district)

Actually the next battle on ice was at around 1263 near the Muhu island. Russians were not involved.
So the reason why Alexander chose that spot to pitch the battle was the tall cliffs on the eastern shore. The infantry was stationed right in front of them, so when the cavalry charge would break through, they'd have no room to turn around and reform the wedge for a second attack. Instead, they were surrounded on all sides.

To live on the step you must gain a culture in which you live to fight. Europian step nomads where just as fearsome as the asian ones if not more. The reason the mongols conquered so much so fast is because they did something that was never deone before or after, they united the tribes and brought the imense war power to bear against settled civilizations not each other.

Hey. Should have been more specific. I just assumed that it would be clear, considering that Alexander and Novgorod are the central figures in this event. Historically my family is from all over the region (and Nizhegorodskaya oblast' as well), yet I have spent more time in Novgorod and the South of Russia for some reason. :) Where are you from?

Also his name was Alexander apparently anyone with that name is a military genius.

I was just thinking when the next vid would come out! Nice!
In Russian schools that story is told weeeeery differently, including statements like "Livonians army was much stronger than Alexander's, also there were a lot of German knights in full plate armor (1242 AD, ahah) and they were scattered so much after the initial encirclement they fled into thin parts of the lake's ice, that collapsed under a weight of heavy cavalry and a lot of knights have drowned". Hell, I even know where those stories originate from: a soviet movie of 1930th by Sergei Eisenstein.

In Russia, till 17th century was only one dinasty “Ruricovichi”. Gademinovichi and other was in Lithuania. Vsevolodochi is not dinasty, they are sons of Vsevolod (bolshoe gnezdo), who was the Head of The Great Kingdom Volodimirskoe, with the main Russian capital city Vlodimir. The main capital Vladimir was since beginning 12 century, when all states regaly were taken from Kiev, by The Great Prince Andrey Bogolybski, Vsevolod’s older brother, and after him Vsevolod became The Great Knyaz. Title Knyaz =.hertsog = konung. But if “The Great Knyaz”, means King. The title Tsar means imperator, taken first time only in 16th century in Russia, before it they called by titile Tsar imperators in Bezantium and HolyRomEmp Germane (Habsburgs). After Mongol’s intervention, they called by the title Tsar, Han of the Ulus-Djuchi state, and only Chingidsids dinasty, capital in Sarai-Berke.

Hmm so nobody actually fell through the ice? Must have been a myth then.
There is a film about which I believe is the earliest source of that particular myth.
It was reported that _some_ did. How many is unclear.
It was also reported that the center did not give in so easily because there was a rock behind it. I.e. it did give in - the militia couldn't possibly stand a heavy knights attack - but the knights found themselves not on an operational space, but facing an unpassable rock.
according to the Russians some did.

Hello! I would like to suggest something that could turn out into a great video. The Siege of Constantinople (717-718) as the last obstacle for an arab invasion of the balkan peninsula and all of Europe. Decisive victory over the Arabs with the combined arms of the Byzentines and the Bulgars(Bulgarians) who were led by Tervel, nicknamed after "The Saviour of Europe" by chroniclists. Thank you for reading! It would turn out a great video.
Byzantines and Bulgarians against an army of Arabs, but more importantly, Byzantines!? Now that is something cool :D
I'm pretty sure they'd tell you " What's a Byzantine ? We're just Romans goddamnit !" XD
Because "decisive" means that the arabs were then repulsed from both Europe and Anatolia, the Byzantines survived for about 700 more years, the Califate entered a crises that would ultimately bring its downfall, a decisive victory doesn't need to end a country to be decisive and also yeah, the Arab Califate does not exist anymore.
@@Angelblue1302 Most importantly, the Byzantines still had Greek Fire which they used on the Arab ships...with most of the Arab army still on board.

Teutonic Order: "It's Tannenberg, and no way!"
Poles & Lithuanians: *stare at massive red brick walls*

Lithuanians: "Yeah, about that: When I said I'd work with you, I didn't mean I'd throw myself at an impregnable castle to get slaughtered pointlessly by angry Germans."
Scout: "Guys! Guys! There's an army of crusaders coming to kick our asses!"
Poles: "...Wat."
Scout: "Apparently, all of Christendom's kinda pissed at you for allying with pagans to kick the crap out of a monastic order."
Poles: "WHAT?!"
Lithuanians: "lol. You're in trooooouble!~""
Poles: "YOU SHUT UP! But...but...how did they get an army together so fast?"
Scout: "Oh, the Teutonic Order has chapter houses and hospitals all over Germany, so they spread the word. Also a lot of people have crusaded with the Order, so most people like them more than you."
Lithuanians: "Well, then, if it's all the same to you, I'm gonna head on home."
Poles: "Wait, what? You're just gonna quit? After everything we went through to get this far?"
Lithuanians: "Yep. Unless you have any ideas for taking this castle? Or facing that crusader army coming?
Poles: "...I'll pack up the tents."
Lithuanians: "I thought as much."
Still tho they bribed the crew and took the castle easily

Here's a bit intel that the op overlooked: The German sources state that it was a minor skirmish; the Russians say it was a huge conflict. Make with that what you will.
This was practically the only Russian victory during the period when the Russian principalities suffered serious defeats from the Mongols. So, it is not surprising that it received a lot of attention in Russian chronicles.
Nevertheless, it ended any semblance of a Baltic crusade in primarily Rus land, which is a lot because (correct me if I'm wrong) Novgorod, Pskov and the Livonian Brotherhood's Rusland borders did not change until the era of Reformation.

Every medieval battle ever:
> heavy cavalry charge is effective but indecisive
> the front line is surrounded
> the reserves who could easily save the surrounded troops route
Monsieur Pepe I know right? What gets me is the reserve force almost always chickens out when they could have been the decisive blow that could have ended the fight favorably
@@Old_Guard2 maybe they should put the worser troops in the front so the more experienced troops in reserve don't run away lol
It's just that these more dynamic battles are more interesting to make videos about. Most battles in the early medieval times end quite quickly if heavy cavalry is involved.
There are also the ones like Brunabruh or Maldon, where the two lines of infantry just slam into each other and after some time one of them emerges victorious.
