WILD 330HP 1972 HOLDEN TORANA XU1 RACER - ONBOARD!

- Onboard Andrew Williams' extremely fast Holden Torana LJ GTR-XU1 from rear of grid as it carves up countless 60s and 70s Muscle Cars at Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit Australia. Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, XY Falcon GT, Falcon Rally Sprint, Valiant Charger, and 1963 427 Ford Galaxie are just a few examples of this awesome field of cars. The little 202cu Six makes a whopping 330hp, in a car that weighs approx 1100kg, delivering not only an awesome power to weight ratio but also superior dynamics over the bigger cars for better handling and braking. The legendary Peter Brock once shared the same benefits, taking the win at a damp 1972 Hardie-Ferodo 500 held at Mount Panorama, Bathurst Australia.
At Master of Machines, we love cars, in fact, we love anything with wheels or an engine, from American Muscle Cars to Australian Muscle Cars, Race Cars and Classic Cars of all kinds and even Barn Finds. If it's fast, powerful, restored or hidden away in hibernation then we'll cover it, and in most cases, we'll even drive them!

Think I’m going to cry. Miss my LJ GTR back in 1989. Still dream of the little red rocket. If only I knew how much they’d be worth today I would of held onto it.
I know. But it may be better to think "I wonder how much I would have spent on it in that time" LOL
me too, me too
Well that's just about the most fun I have had sitting in front of a computer. Thanks Glen, top notch as usual mate.
That was fkn awesome. I loved every second of that. Brilliant drive. I was right with him when he was screaming at the 'stang.
His own fault, messed it up or did you miss that ?
crunchytheclown probably missed it watched it on my phone
@@crunchytheclown9694 haha .. standard old Holden gear stick issue cant find 3rd, even worse when it pops right out and you pull it back and lock in gear
@@crunchytheclown9694 yeah he missed the gear at least twice but that doesn’t relate to the frustration expressed for selfish driving by the mustang. His lack of cubic centimetres also put him there but how does that excuse the stangs driving?
@@crunchytheclown9694 Missed a gear then lost 3 places.
Those beautiful, beautiful little XU-1's!!
thats a man who knows his machine , what a rocket
That was like leaving Castlereagh drags on a Saturday night, bloody beauty Glen
That...was a really sweet driven XU1.
That is a beast,Beautiful sounding 202 love a good six
Such an awesome car. My first car was the same colour XU1. I can still remember being driven by my Dad at ridiculous speeds, sliding around corners. But that was 1/4 century ago, though.
my brother had a genuine gtr ,he completely restored it and after it was completed he loaned it to me for a week, there was a hill near my place with a gentle curve at the top and it is the only car that I have had to brake going up that hill, it would go over that hill at 100mph if it was a straight road.GREAT LITTLE CAR,I also owned one it was a 2 door with a 173 and three on the tree, I sold it to another brother, but before I did I painted it red,he had a good run out of it.
Thanks for that, what a drive! My first car was an LJ Torana S always dreamed of a GTR-XU1. This car handles like a go-kart, of course it must be fully worked over. Love to see a full race video.
That's one tuff LJ, great steering and fantastic to watch
Great drive and so many Torana’s still racing 😀😀
'Ahhh!!!! Get outta the way!' .. This is a man on a mission
I can't believe how many XU1'S were in that race that thing is a weapon CHEERS MATE great video.
She sure is an angry little machine! Glad you liked it! :-)
I had a VK Calais 202 EFI with 320rwhp and it was wild and in the wet weather it was fun fun fun sick sick sick fish tail, fish tail, fish tail everywhere so I can only imagine 330rwhp in a little Torana. Love this video Glenn thanks Mate.
😎🤙😁🍺👍🇦🇺
I cannot speak for the owner but reasonably certain this car is 330 flywheel hp, not at the rears. Nonetheless, over 300hp in a 202 is an achievement.
Yes that's correct, 330hp on the engine dyno.
@@GlennEverittMasterofMachines yeah that was my "auto correct" that put in RWHP and I didn't realize until i hit send. Getting 300hp out of a 202 today is a lot easier than it was 20-30years ago.
😎🤙
@@-sandman4605 Isn't that the truth. Far less bolt on stuff, but those of us that run fast sixes, looked for ever single hp we could find, no mater where it was laying in the engine. Often it required going places where conventional engine builders wouldn't go.
what did you do to get 320 rwhp out of a vk 202 calais?????
So that's where all the LJ's and stangs went lol.Bloody top drive mate,I love the sound of an old red on song
Torana TERROR!!!!
Brilliant Car and driver combo...get out of the way! love it
That was awesome! I love LC LJ Toranas! Great effort off the line and on the first lap. Pity about the red flag as he was on a clean lap before that and making progress.
Even though I'm a Ford Girl, my first love was the XU1. That was AWESOME. Thanks Glen for posting.
Nicely done . That car was so pokey and sounded so good I thought it could have been a V8 rather than the 6 .
WoW. What an extremely tough holden red 6. I was cringing every time he missed 3rd gear thinking the red would explode at 7500rpm. Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have subscribed so watch more of your vids. Cheers
Thanks Mark, welcome aboard! We appreciate it.
Enjoyed every second...
That glorious Galaxie!
Thank you mate.. friggen awsome ride
What a hot 6! I thought it was going to be a little slow, but NOT! What a ride! Thanks for posting. 👍
Man.. That 202 sounds sweet. 👍
Sounds superb!
nice drive in the Trana
If this blokes looking for fans he just scored another.
Make that 2 ✌️
Another 1
And another
That thing is a rocket !!
Great stuff to watch...love those toranas
Awesome drive! Great channel mate!
Toranaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy shit, that is quick. Great video, thanks Glenn
Glad you enjoyed it George!
Time for a new shifter set up, looked like it was ready for a fergie tractor! Lol
Yes too slow for sure.
10/10 Loved it !!
This and the Lotus Cortina would have to be my two favourite racers.
Now that's a car I need to test! Lotus Cortina... :-)
Smashed it
What a weapon
Love the old xu1's great driving mate.
Yep that sounds awesome
Great drive and what a beast!!
Best part is ... Glenn Everitt, keeping quiet and NOT yelling ... Yeeeah Hah !, and Oooh Booy !
You've hurt my feelings....:-(
Sorry Champ; it does wear a bit thin sometimes, though : .. ;-)
@@regenmeister9646 , all good, I'm just an excitable fellow. :-)

@@regenmeister9646 , thanks so much for your support, it means a lot. Looking forward to your feedback. :-)
What a ride..
Well done, thanks Glenn 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good to see you are still at it Glenn, keep up the great work
Thanks mate, will do!
another excellent bloke's car vid-along. Well done Glenn, thanks
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it.
Great drive. You must have been a go Karter at some stage. Inside. Outside. Didn’t matter. As a ex superkarter I would been pleased with that drive. Well done 👍
Giant killer. Man he was good on the anchors. And 330hp out of an n/a 202 is pretty much as far as you'll get I'd reckon. Great video Glenn, thanks for sharing.
There is a guy racing a torona in NZ with a billet 202 block that has 420hp.
www.whichcar.com.au/features/420hp-billet-holden-202
@@Greenfig85 Billet block and a J.ZED head. Big money deal but impressive with an n/a 202.
@@brett174 Yer I hate to know what it cost him... nevertheless impressive as you said. Never knew a 202 could pump that out. I'm curious about how reliable it is.
@@Greenfig85 Yes mate, I reckon it'd be regularly rebuilt. The 330hp from a 9/12 port head would be about as much as it'd go n/a. J.ZED heads are pretty much hens teeth. Must be real keen to spend that kind of coin, but a 420hp red 6 would be a hoot to drive.
Can anyone tell me what the HDT Torana’s were making in hp?
Good defensive driving from the P plate mustang made you work for your pass.
Good driving.
That sweet sound of a hot 202 🤤
XU1’s had triple SU’s didn’t they? I’d say they’d be letting all that sound wind out, I know the 6pack Chargers and their triple Weber’s made a sublime symphony out of the 265’s
Just read in the comments it actually has triple Weber’s and not SU’s, so that explains it all then 😉👍
Lj’s had stromberg triple 175’s still sounds good but this beast has triple 48 Webber’s much bigger hence the throaty note
@@tufflc1545 👍 Hey Charger ✌️
What a drive and just love those torri,s
Very good steering Andrew, I had one of these once, wish I still did.
Hard to believe that's a red motor. Used to help my pop fix his hr 186. Loved that thing.
Awesome!
Love those down shifts 👌
Love it!
So entertaining. Love Toranas.
Runs hard love it!
That’s a very angry little engine. Great viewing
Love it
always wished i had bought a second hand LJ torana for my first car i ended up with a gemini that had a brand new paint job and was nice to drive as a hand me down from my dad. My second car was a vn v8.
So good!!!
Excellent
Great stuff Andy. Long way from Noble Park 😁
That is a master class in good driving
Good old school sound
Luv the power band🦻
must chew through the banjo diffs😆
I can only wish that was me driving the XU1 great car of their decade
Just Watching, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to watch... But like everybody else I am questioning.1. Cubic Capacity 2. Fuel 3. Brakes 4. block and cylinder head... The Bench Flow Numbers Must be SO High as it was still accelerating between (torque and HP available) between 6000 and 7500 rpm. " Inconceivable... " as said in the Princess Bride Movie. Totally inconceivable with Red motor technology prior to ....
Love it,
Bloody fantastic car
Awesome
Awesome.
What a weapon!
Not wrong!! Heaps of potential
Nice drive !
Effing brilliant driving!
How good is he coming into corners under brakes!
Just that damn M21 gearbox huh..

LJs now over half century old - wow, where did my life go? Whoosh!
THAT Was awesome. Such a nice sound . High revving 202 . Giant Killer. Awesome driving too. Great skills. I would love to have been strapped in next to you. I love the old 202s great reliable old engine and just look what we can do with it....... GO HOLDEN. ALWAYS.

Nice one Glenn
what can I say !!!! f**king AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAwesome
Wow
sick dude
I owned a GTR Torana. Miss that car soooo much.... What a brilliant drive here in this XU-1! Where did he finish?
Just found the channel. How good! Also notice how a missed gear can change things...
Go Andrew xxxx
Little Aussie red motor 👍🇦🇺
😮1:22...MAKE SOME ROOM IM COMING THROUGH!😀
plenty of Opels!!
That's a good Torana, very smooth driver too - high speed grip thru the corners, late brake and 7,000 rpm - definite V8 eater.
Reminds me of Broadmeadows on Friday nights
Good old Broady👌👌👌

Damn, that red 69 Camaro comes back from no-where!
Only on the straights, Torana's get it on every corner however.
