Never ever accept a free piano unless like you are not the one on the hook for moving/repairing it. Even if it’s in perfect condition moving a piano is such a fucking pain that if it’s not worth it it sucks! Sure you can get rid of it but after having to move it to your house you’re not going to want to deal with that again just to get rid of it so you’ll just end up with a useless piano.

most saloon pianos *were* out of tune, that's why if you play some of those classic saloon songs, it sounds good even if it's on a tuned or untuned piano. I imagine it's because piano tuners were sparse and didn't really visit saloons 😂
I wanted a piano so bad, but my parents knew it would be very expensive. Then, my lovely piano teacher told us, that we could get a free piano. So we got this 90 year old, lovely black piano, an expert looked over it and said that is was amazing. We got it tuned and also got some other stuff done and now I have an amazing piano with such a great story. Also, the whole thing was way cheaper than getting a knew one. It sounds so awesome and I absolutely love it.
Free pianos require a call out from the piano tuner, which isn't gonna be cheap. If you are gonna spend 100 bucks on the call out, why not spend 300 and get a known good piano.
I played on the semi-abandoned piano at my high school and loved it. Probably untouched in 20 years, the action was shot, it sounded awful, but I loved that piano.😊
It reminds me of my grandma's house. She was a piano teacher in her time, but since she had retired and didn't teach anymore, she figured there was no point in fixing it since they expected to be dead by 75 years old. So for her 90th birthday, we paid to get it tuned, but growing up it just reminds me of my grandparent's house. This piano in the video sounds the same as theirs too. BTW they are still alive just hit 93 years old. I agree it's just a unique musical instrument.

to be honest, if a piano is free and depending if its rare or not, you could still get it, gut it and use it as a fancy desk Edit: for those saying its atrocious, I hear you. I love music and my father has been a pianist since he was 12, I have a great appreciation for music and the instruments it is made with. This idea is an absolute last resort for the pianos that are either unbranded, extremely common or those that need nearly everything replaced. I hate when things go to waste especially something as beautiful as a standing piano.
But only sometimes and only a skilled pianist can bring out that quirky character of the piano without it sounding harsh. But i do agree with you It's a a character trait for a piano, unique.
As long as you won’t make it any worse take the free piano and store it somewhere safe if you won’t restore it because someone will. We should take care of these older pianos, they’ll be treasures someday I think

When I was a kid, my parents got a free piano. We got it checked, and the lady was impressed by the sound of it. It didn’t need to be tuned, but we also got it from an old couple, who were really nice
I used to be the owner of a George Steck Studio Upright. I made a poor decision and traded it for a Peavey PA system back in 1991. That was the best upright piano I've ever heard in my life. The feel of the keys was awesome. If I have the chance I will get another one one day.
If someone is giving away a piano for free they aren't gonna hold it for you to hire a piano tuner to come out and look at it. It doesn't look good and makes yourself look bad because it's FREE. Take it home with you and if you really want a piano tuner to look at it then hire one and if they say it's gonna be expensive to fix just give it away for free or throw it out.
As long as you don't waste their time while letting the tuner look at it it should be fine. Piano is quite big so it's different than small things that are easy to get rid of if they are unrepairable
Yeah just take all the time to load it up and put it in your house only to realize it's not worth anything and have to find a way to get it carried off (and you'll have to pay for that.) It takes almost no time for a piano tuner to tell you if it's not worth the effort

I got a free piano and it was perfect. The reason the dude gave it to me was because his landlord didn’t allow it to be on his porch and he couldn’t fit it in his apartment so he just gave it away.
I'm always fascinated by how you can disassemble these forlorn pianos and spark new life into them. I rebuilt a V6 engine once but, I still don't think I could do what you do. I would think that hearing the end product of your labors would be the most satisfying part of your job, though. :)

They were definitely my least favorite piano to tune, because they don't tune up very well (except the Baldwins) because of their short strings.
I'd be lucky to find a free piano that's all broken down and out of tune. I love the sound of old pianos that have been thoroughly loved, but not particularly taken care of. I adore their poorly pitched notes that have the same comforting lack of harmony as your family singing happy birthday to you as a kid. They're beautiful in their own way
Literally sounds like me. I got a free piano, and its literally amazing, but we were expecting it to be in rough shape. Eventually, a key broke and i might need to get it tuned soon, but it looks like a very very easy fix.
I tuned my free piano after watching another of your shorts. It's a '75 Wurlitzer, last serviced in '85. I did not see the part where you lubed the bridge. However, I was able to do it with some patience and a socket wrench.
I wish i could have gotten the piano from the old Houston hostel that was torn down. That thing had more memories then you could shake a stick at. It's gone now. Destroyed with the hundred+ house it was in and a poorly built apartment complex is now in its place. Rest in pieces sweet piano. You will not be forgotten.😢
I got a free acrosonic piano that was played by Charles Munch of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Even came with the papers confirming that it was played at Tanglewood. It’s a beautiful piano and it’s really cool to have that piece of history in my house

i had a friend that bought an old upright piano. he sanded it all down, fixed some of the broken/decayed wood work. he designed and made a glass inlay for it. and to top it off, he then bought some music books and taught himself to play the piano. i wish i had a picture of it.

Yes, it’s “protek” lubricant. It helps avoid breaking strings and makes the tuning a little more stable. I got that tip from the owner of “gazelle”, and I hardly ever break strings now.

This is making me think about pianos in movies. What if the movie would need like a broken piano to be played because in that world it's basically just ruins or something, everything is old. The character plays the piano for their friends, but the notes are a little bit off and etc. because it's old
I would definitely take a free piano if I wasn't looking to buy one, if it's broken I just won't play it and leave it as decoration, but if it's not then I'll play it. It's a win win in my book
I happen to be super lucky one day, and my school was getting rid of one of their pianos. It is old, but still in very good condition was in tune, no sticking keys or anything wrong with it. :))
I got a free piano and I’m using it rn and one of my parents friends that are a piano teacher said it was in really good shape and it was perfectly tuned even though it was made in 1937
I think this one has very nice sound, compared to most others you have shown. So, if someone knows what he's buying, getting a specific one, even if broken, may be the better choice than a cheap new or used one.

This is making me think about pianos in movies.
What if the movie would need like a broken piano to be played because in that world it's basically just ruins or something, everything is old.
The character plays the piano for their friends, but the notes are a little bit off and etc. because it's old

I would definitely take a free piano if I wasn't looking to buy one, if it's broken I just won't play it and leave it as decoration, but if it's not then I'll play it. It's a win win in my book

I happen to be super lucky one day, and my school was getting rid of one of their pianos. It is old, but still in very good condition was in tune, no sticking keys or anything wrong with it. :))
I got a free piano and I’m using it rn and one of my parents friends that are a piano teacher said it was in really good shape and it was perfectly tuned even though it was made in 1937
Man, seeing all of these recommendations makes me want to pick up playing again. I prefer percussion though
I think this one has very nice sound, compared to most others you have shown. So, if someone knows what he's buying, getting a specific one, even if broken, may be the better choice than a cheap new or used one.
