you should sample the piano with water inside and make a soundfont for your piano tech to use with a E-piano when he misses you.

Yes. That would be amusing to watch someone try to play.
How would you keep it quiet before they start playing without suspiciously clamping all the keys down?
@@Time4Technology Let the strings ring out for a minute

Next time surprise the tech by filling up your piano with Jello.
Unfortunately it’s difficult to cause that much jello to set properly.

I would have expected it to be more flat, possibly with some reverberation (forgive me if I used that word incorrectly).
Maybe take out the water and replace it with oil, or use thick water (it's for old people do they don't choke on it), I feel like a thicker liquid will change the sound in an cool way.
Jello?
Thickened water would be so interesting!!!
@@elijabutterfly6154 Thick water is not quite like Jello. Instead of gelatin, there's a starch. It doesn't firm up, but it's thicker than normal water. Tastes like water, but thick like a syrup.
non newtonian fluid, the stuff that solidifies when it moves and liquifies when stationary would be hilarious
Thicker liquid will only dampen the sound even more, cause it takes more energy to set it in vibration
The way the water changes the sound of the piano in the underwater microphones is actually really cool - has potential for use in a composition as distortion.
Mattias is slowly creating the Ultimate Piano Technician.
Of course it sounds awful *with piano strings.* They aren't rated for underwater usage. I'm pretty sure fishing line would sound much better on this piano.
Finally a good comment
I don't think fishing line would sound like anything. I suppose to get the lower strings you could wrap fishing wire around fishing wire to make it thicker???

I found it to sound quite interesting as a music producer, I mean I understand why a pianist doesn't like it. you really should do a sample library of all your pianos.
He did with the metal hammer piano. Fishing line sounded neat, briefly. The strings stretch so it went out of tune within minutes. Guitar strings also had a neat sound but he'd need to get them custom made in lengths to fit a piano.
As a pianist I HATE IT😤

I love all these vids because it’s Mattias doing 10,000 points of psychic damage to himself over months and months with the piano builds, for a payoff of doing 100,000 points of psychic damage to the piano tech in a single second when he realizes what has happened
That’s great he just ended up playing with it and enjoying the experiment! Awesome video, cant imagine how much work this took as well!
Great experiment! From a sound design perspective, it's absolutely worth sampling that : )
And I'm pretty sure you can get something really nice out of that weird sound for any type of horror/scary composition.
I said it in the first video and i will say it again, some company should make water proof pianos and there should be a scuba concert
There was a band I heard of a long time ago that did underwater music, but they only performed live, and it wasn't easy to do. I forget what they were called but they had mainly violins iirc

I really enjoyed from this sound, it reminds pizzicato on cello to me. Also, some similar sound can be achieved with a technique when an arm is used to press the strings. You can see that in Say Fazil - Black Earth, for example.

Listen, your piano tech, he's so cute 😭 I absolutely adore his passion and curiosity he's so sweet 💕
For piano to be able to have water flow through it, I think it would something akin to a secondary exterior frame like a chassis. So that the water can flow 'through' the piano without damaging anything internally
Give it another 2-3 pianos and I think you'd be able to *really* prank the poor tech.
Get a new piano that doesn't sound so great to begin with, don't do *anything* to it but put a huge stonking great padlock to keep the lid shut. Tell him you're not gonna let him look inside until he correctly guesses what you've done to it and see how long it takes him to realise. :D

THICC BRAIN. u smart good job
I think it's something a composer would be more appreciative of, or maybe one of those experimental musicians. I mean I've seen them playing baloons, water bowls, or even using the piano in an unconventional way. So it might be up their alley.

They had a scene where Kousei Arima was playing deep underwater to symbolize that he can't hear the piano sounds well or at all
But can you even hire those kinds of people? 💀
I can agree. Hearing how the notes sound when submerged under water had given me ideas.
Amazing how it still produces sounds
that piano would have been so cool to record a underwater song for a game
You should definitely sample it and make a sample library out of it, it sounds so unique!

By understanding how a piano works, I got a nice idea for a next piano embellishment: One could reverse the hammering system so that the piano makes a sound when you let the key go and that it stops when you press it. I am convinced that playing a song now would become really funny.
I already made a little engineering plan for it, so just respond if you’re interested 😊
The idea came while watching this video of Mark Rober: czcams.com/video/uBEL3YVzMwk/video.html

How’s it going Mattias? We’ll after watching the video where you put real hammers in the piano I was curious for more!! You didn’t disappoint! Really cool Idea !! Thanks again, I’ll be Checking out some more videos. Take care, stay safe and healthy!!
here's an idea. take off the lid. and like a boat. add a fiberglass shell to it and make it look like a geodesic dome that way you can see if it makes everything more resonating as the first step. and then for a part 2. you can then fill it with dirt and plants to make it into a terrarium a bio-dome if you will. that way you can get two videos out of one project. but then the piano itself becomes an art piece.
Must be fun workdays for the piano tech
I was wondering if the speed of sound through water would do anything, but it probably just made it feel a little louder. Great video Mattias!
I don't know what it sounds like in person but I like the sound. Sounds like plucking a string rather than striking a piano cord
it does sound vaguely like a piano that could actually work in a mario underwater level
“It plays almost perfectly” and that’s why the piano tech is here
The issue is how sound transfers through water to air by reshaping the design it would work though it would be massive trial and error.
The best part about honey is that it is free, the number of times it has actually saved me money though is probably 1/10000 purchases.
When he said it was muffled and damped, I was thinking “it’s a little more than damp, my guy…” 🤣
Maybe you were joking but that would be an accurate term. ”reduce or stop the vibration of (the strings of a piano or other musical instrument) so as to reduce the volume of sound”.
@@Nekotaku_TV it was a play on words. damp could mean either “reduce or stop vibration of strings” or “be slightly moist with liquid”

I think the water in a piano is an interesting mix, honestly. Hearing the underwater mic is a really nice thing, though obviously subdued. I really like how it cuts off and is really pure on an easily recorded way. I can't describe why it sounds good, but I love the underwater audio.
I'd find it fascinating if a studio could sample an "underwater piano". Would be really interesting for music production, add some big room verb, it'd sound like it was at the bottom of the ocean. Maybe some fx to give it a bit of atmosphere, layer it with a quiet string even? Hmm..
I actually love the sound of the water piano!!! Its sounds super cool.
I think it actually sounds awesome, you could make some really interesting music with that filled as it is! I've been thinking about experimental sounds lately, maybe this would be a great idea to fill again and get some samples before the wood goes bad 🤘😎👌

It resolves the erroneous sympathetic resonance! It's closer to vocalese... amazing.
crazy that a water filled piano kinda sounds like a harp!
"At the bottom of the ocean" lmao. He's right tho.
I'm kind of curious what would happen if you used a less dense liquid like alcohol or oil. I can only assume it would equate to less muting?
Actually, I think this would be a neat soundtrack choice for someone making music for underwater scenes.
The problem is mostly because the strings are *partially* under water. The mismatch in impedance will cause havoc on the string's vibration.
