JK Inverter BMS Frontpanel for Seplos Mason 280. But wait...

- This new front panel is supposed to replace the original front of the Seplos Mason 280 DIY Kit and will enable you to install the JK Inverter BMS in this battery box. I ordered two of these panels to upgrade both of my Mason battery boxes. The BMS, communication board and display are fitting perfectly behind the new panel, so let's mount it on the battery case and see how it looks like... Wait, it is not that easy!
Nowhere on the AliExpress shop it actually says that this is a replacement panel for the Seplos box, but I have confirmed exactly that before I bought, so was under the impression it will be a 1-to-1 swap.

Hi Andy,
I have purchased three of these fronts, too mate with three plywood boxes I have constructed myself
Hello Andy,
it looks like drilling the wholes of the plate bigger and use some washers for the srews will do the job. 🐸
Yes, that will work if I make the holes a lot bigger. Especially the front row if far too high.
And I need rust converter...
Ich würds zurückschicken und meine eigene Frontplatte bauen. Wie schwer kann das schon sein, für ein Genie wie Dich 💪
You could also file the holes larger and put washers under the screws.
Yes.
Or Dremel and burr bit if you are steady with a power tool.
think i could be the 86 lol...im in AU also and a tickerer like yourself glad to jump aboard!
Yeah, with the build quality in question…I’d just send them back. You already have something that works and YOUR build quality was much better.
i dont have epilepsy but at 6:52 you might consider giving a epilepsy warning because of the flashing torch, great video btw
Andy: the first thing to learn is that water is a cheaper storage of energy than batteries, so make sure to Never heat up water with a battery unless in an emergency when there is no line power.
Keep the cheaply made front and replace the box with their box and you have another video to sell.
Simply drill all the holes oversize and then use large diameter washers.
+ some rust converter
@@OffGridGarageAustralia No - just think of the finish as being more shabby chic than high end.
I'm little crazy I would grind off paint around the edge. Weld holes shut. Cut the size down to fit. Drill new holes. Paint.
I'm sorry Andy.
My fault.
Recently received my XR07 280Ah box for JK bms with 4.3inch display and I must admit, they also do have problems with aligning holes.
Going back to front plate. I would drill or file this holes wider, move it where it should be and use washer(black ones preferably).
In the end it is Frankenstein.
Don't try to make him pretty.
After all, it's the Frankenstein battery and your remake of the old panel suites it just fine. Send them back.
Very good point, Bruce!
Hi Andy, to be honest, I would go for option 3: since you have most already measured, draw it in 2D and send it up for laser/waterjet cutting in a local shop
If you have the right size file, you could elongate the holes in the front. Not the best, but the screws will hold.
grind the paint off the screw hole and weld the hold close then center punch and tap new threads
Hi, Andy (washers)
Andy, Its best to order the case that fits the front panel and wait for the correct front panel and make another case. André
Fill with welding and punch again.
weld the holes closed trim extra 2mm off redrill holes correctly, paint and Andy label the Markings. will be cheaper than shipping I think and You have a Andy's front panel :-)
I cannot weld such thin metal. I only have a jig saw on hand to cut the metal. 2mm will be messy to trim off.
I don't have to pay for return shipping. AliExpress is doing that. Most articles have a 'Free Returns' label, so...
@@OffGridGarageAustralia in that case send it back unless You want the content, for 2mm a flap wheel or file might do it on that thin metal i've done that on thin pc cases rather than buy a new one.
Holes not lining up? This is exactly why they make fender washers.🤣
Hahaha, yeah, I may end up with such a solution😅
It would actually work well and is the easiest fix.
Perhaps starting the screws process from the centre out might give a more even install and then proceed to moderately modify the ones closer to the edges
Yes, correct, tried that as well. The bottom row is around 4-5mm out though. No way to centre that unless I widen up these holes.
How about trimming the panel to be very slightly under sized all around. Add a frame border to cover the holes all around using aluminium angle and glue it to the plate using JB Weld. You can then drill the border with correct hole spacing and paint as required. If you rust treat before assembly the bad paint edges will be hidden and hopefully the damaged paint finish will be hidden behind the frame.
Option number two!
Yes, Andy send them back. If it's not perfect, then you will not be happy with second best. And as you suggested, make your own or get the right product.
Andy, Self tappers
I would suggest to increase the holes on the front panel and use washers with bigger outer diameter under the screws heads, in this way the screws will fit and together with the washers will hold the front panel. When using black fasteners or after painting them black the modifications will not be visible.
Yep, that's an easy solution. And trim off the side and top a bit, or leave this as it is?
Your looking at a little work a very thin washer but bigger to cover the old holes. Some rust nutrition and paint 🎨. Saving about 30 days transition from and to. ✅

Atention for acesory of this panel. The cabling its made only from 7AWG and use 25mm2 terminals. The busbars has 48mm2.
Minimum for 200A is 70mm2 (7AWG in double is about 24mm2)
External terminals are made from aluminium without silver plating.
Do not waste your money.
just trim off the 2mm side and oversize the holes and use the screws provided, possibly with washers
Have you turned the panel upside down and checked alignment? I would grind two mm off. The imperfect front fit nay give the correct hole spacing once sitting correctly
The holes won't fit, regardless. The paint will come off when using a grinder. I would use a jig saw and slowly work it through to not generate heat.
Great videos, i enjoyed watching ur teachings. Pls sir, where can i get good online training course on off-grid solar design systems? Thanks
I would like to see a smaller plate that has the comms port only because it is the most difficult to make with lots of filing, so I would butcher your plate just for the comms port as long as there is enough to make a flange out of it, even more so you could just trim the main plate borders by say 20 to 30mm enough to make a new outer adapter plate with the small trimmed plate fitting inside with some mounting screws
We have the comms port as a 3D printed part or panel already. You mean something like this just in metal: www.thingiverse.com/thing:6389453
Yeah, I could make one plate out of the two. I just don't have the right tools to handle such metal correctly. A jig saw and a metal file basically...
No! send them back. We need more DIY 3D printed frankenparts.
Hi Andy, You have all these separate batteries. What's preventing you to just all connect them to the main busbars? For me it is like filling bottles at the gas station instead of throwing it in the gas tank.
I can't find out but these custom diy box panel solutions will these cases fit the 314 and 304 now lifepo4 cells?
Treat yourself to a 270L istore heat pump for your hot water. We did it used 2-4Kwh per day and frees up power to house/car. They aren’t particularly $$$ either.
It’s a shnook send it back, just like John West
Hi Andy, I tought you advised the gobalpower battery but I can't find the link on you website. Is your opinion changed ?
When will we see the CAN to CAN Peter board?
Hi Andy,
Are you try to connect Seplos BMS with JK Inverter BMS? In JK documentation in part of communication protocol and CANBUS, option 6 has option 005 - SEPLOS BMS CAN Protocol V1.0.
No, that will not work.
@@OffGridGarageAustraliaHave you really tried it with latest Firmware Version? If this works IT will BE a big benefit for the Community.
Thank you
It is bloody amazing how Chinese sellers can fly goods through two lots of customs and multiple couriers and arrive within a week. Yet ebay sellers take six days just to dispatch an item from 100 miles away and the postie takes at least three more.
They create the shipping label immediately you order as well. But it takes them 6 days to ship your stuff.
Exactly my experience.
Yes, I'm ordering more and more from Ali as it arrives quicker than from eBay or even Amazon here in Australia.
I see a 3D printed panel using all those measurements you already took and share the file... 😁😁😁
Yeah, but at the end it is made from plastic not metal. And we are dealing with a high-powered energy storage system. And I'm not talking about heat or so but more from a regulatory perspective.
Hello Andy,
is there any video that talks about your victron power management system or all the blue stuff on your wall? I really like that victron display on your system tells about what you have. unfortunately I have 11 kw voltronic 11kw inverter which has two PV inputs, wondering how do you manage to combine multiple different set of PV into your system, do you have individual mppt for each set up PV units, such I have 9x550 and 6x550 totally away from each other PV units; but I hesitate to connect them into single inverter, which I assume each PV1 and PV2 needs to be equal, wondering how do you manage? can I integrate victron battery management system into my interver and JK BMS to see that beautiful display? Thanks
P.S. I would weld those holes or fill with some paintable silicons then sand it then re drill holes and paint again, since it is already started to rust.
I have four separate arrays of varying sizes. My 5kW MPP inverter has 3.5kW supplying it and the other three are fed to the BMS via individual MPPT controllers set up with identical bulk, absorption and float settings. These are combined just before the BMS using a 200A block. So the inverter sees the 3.5kW as a supply and the external charge as all battery input. The BMS treats the combined input as one variable charge.
Not fully efficient due to inevitable minor discrepancies, but not complex due to multiple control or monitoring points.
It's not been working fine for years with lead and now lithium batteries.
how abouts testing out there box that goes with the front panel that was sent?
👍👍👍
Weld the holes close or let someone do it, repaint and redrill with the right positions if you want it perfect.
If you are fine with not so nice looking, reposition the panel and redrill or widening the holes and use washers for the screws.
/Marc
Yep, both possible solutions. Welding and repainting seem to be a lot of work and $$$ though.
JLPCB could convert your own design to steel, and may sponsor the channel also?
They are asking for a while for a sponsorship. I don't do sponsorships where money flows. It makes you biased as you need to deliver some positive outcome for them.
I know they do CNC and metal work design as well. I would need to measure all the standoffs, holes, cutouts as well. That seems an awful lot of work... I really don't have the right measurement tools to be that precise either.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia ok glad you don't take sponsorship actually. I thought maybe you could have sent your 3d file.
@@TobyRobb yeah, I don't have a 3D file or exact measurements of the Seplos front panel. Just the photo and measurements I've shown in the video. To make such a plate, it needs to be far more precise.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia sorry i must have been thinking of the 3d printed panel you made previously
@@TobyRobb I printed some elements of a front panel and mounting bracket for the JK BMS.
Do the holes line up if you put the panel upside down?
No. That's what I did. The top and bottom row of the holes have a different distance from the corner of the plate.
I have the same bms card like that and 4.3 inch display.
But the display show empty red cell even 100% battery percentage .
How can i fix that please.
If the simplest thing is to supplement whit a plate and drill New ones
Send it back
Maybe drill each hole bigger and use button head screws to hold it on
Yes, that would work.
Andy, try turning the screws from a different angle and more screws will probably fit. and those where it is not suitable, simply pull the holes in the right direction with the help of a dremel or a round file.
How about building your own, out of plexiglass. You’ll be able to see the insides, too.

You are lucky, i have 2 of 6 faulty jk bms, one will not start probably, and one has poped a discharge fet. I have a really hard time to get them to take responsibility for ther shit... 😩
They should at least warrant the one which does not start correctly. Have you tried force updating it to an earlier version and then flash again to the current version. This has helped others in the past.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Thanks for the advice but its not the "inverter" bms, the one that cannot start probably is an 8s with heater function. 🗑️

That is my biggest concern. The metal has no priming and rust is already underway. In two years time, it will look ugly.

How much is the cost to send it back? They just throw them in the rubbish!
Depends on shipping costs, but they look poor quality and too much work to make them fit, just cut your losses.
Return shipping is free with most AliExpress articles. At least here in Australia. Most articles now have a 'Free Returns' label.
Try and MacGyver it ... new video ?
4 Magnets, cheap tacky solution for cheap tacky product :)
OK, that could work actually with using the strong earth magnets from hard drives. I have lots of them laying around...
Find a weld shop and have them weld up all the holes, and machine the sides to the correct width, then re-drill the hole pattern with your drawing and repaint ... I'd return for a full refund. But you could use this as an opportunity to learn some TIG welding, and weld the holes up yourself and redrill to the correct location. I've seen your work and it's well within you abilities ... you do good stuff 😉

Hallo Andreas
