Today we're looking at another highly requested metal vocalist - Spencer Sotelo of Periphery! This vocalist doesn't really get the credit they deserve, I haven't seen too many reaction or analysis videos on him from other voice teachers. But as always, you asked for it and I'm here to deliver! Spencer is really doing a combination of amazing vocal sounds in the clip we take a look at from their new single "Blood Eagle" off of the upcoming record "Hail Stan". What techniques is Spencer using? What are the different styles? What's his vocal range?

His voice goes up like an angel and down like a wounded ox
Periphery, love that shit
Lmao. I remember this.
One of the main reasons why I clicked this video.
Everytime I introduce someone to Periphery, I quote this.
End of icarus lives
He's an awesome vocalist. I talked to him at a show and asked him how he hits those high notes he said "idk, they're just in my register" and I asked him what kind of screams he does, his response "I don't even know man, I just do it." Great natural talent
I think its hard for most people to answer something like that, especially when it comes to vocals. There's so much imagery and mental cue's and different combinations of muscles involved in singing...and since you cant see the mechanisms at work like you can with a physical instrument, answers to questions like that would likely just be some generic vocal coach stuff. Singing is really something unique to the individual that has to be figured out on your own (for the most part). So im sure he knows what has to happen, but it would just be difficult to put into words.
@@Oh_its_Mike - exactly my thoughts
I went to the all things periphery jam and hung out with him for a few days. He doesn't know what the "technical term" but in that vain he really is able to put his technique into layman's terms and teach people how to find their own voice. Everyone in that band is a phenomenol teacher and the coolest dudes I've ever met.
Brendan Horner u went to atp jam.....super jealous
It's kinda like I can eat an entire pizza. Natural talent.
Spencer is hands down the most-improved singer in metal. His cleans *and* his screams made such a massive leap between Periphery's self-titled debut and Periphery II, and they've only gotten better over time. I don't know how he trained or who he trained with, but the transformation's been remarkable to observe!
I always thought it was the protest the hero tour they did. The improvement live was crazy. I assumed he just trained with rody the entire time.
@@crowing3886 "Follow me, grasshopper. I shall teach you of vibrato and high pitches."
On Alpha and Omega he was totally insane. The guy is an alien.
Yeah his vocals on P2 are just insane
Daniel Thompkins have improved a lot since "One" too.
Hearing him hit his high notes live is mind blowing. Never understood the hate he gets, heâs amazing
It's literally taken me like 10 years of practice to be able to belt a D5 like he does in this song - it's very impressive!!
VoiceHacks Their newest song Garden In The Bones is a much more melodic one. It really shows off his full range and is the highlight of the track. You should check it out.
It's crazy his highest note is a live performance.
I think it takes a lot of metal heads time to adjust to hearing and appreciating his style of vocals. Initially, I hated him. It sounded like he would randomly hit high notes in their songs just to show off that he could. And they didn't seem to fit the music. They came off as whiny, emo style vocals and I just hated it. I literally cringed the first time I listened to the beginning of the song 'Erised. ' Specifically, at the way he sung the word "sweat." But it's a great song and I got over it. It just took time to really appreciate how talented he is. He really is an incredible vocalist with a wide range. I just wish he would apply those talents differently sometimes.
Brooks i think it stems from P1, at first i hated P1 cos i thought the vocals sucked, but it slowly became my favourite album of all time.
His vocal range in Peripheryâs Juggernaut dual album will forever keep him in some of the highest ranks of my favorite vocalists, along with that album being one of my all-time favorites.
Same. I love all of their stuff, but Juggernaut is special to me. The way the story is told, instrumentally, lyrically, vocally, is just so amazing to me from beginning to end. Truly a well crafted masterpiece in my eyes.
The end of omega is the sound of doom descending upon an already critically damaged psyche. Fuck. The dynamics
Agreed Juggernaut has some Absolute BANGERS on it. His vocals on that album are amazing
Juggernaut CANNOT be beaten for prog albums or Periphery albums, in my opinion. Stranger Things changed my musical world on Omega. The Bad Thing changed how I handled beats. Spencer's voice was untouchable that album.
by far their best work imo
The ends of Ragnarok and The Scourge blow my mind every damn time. Give those a listen if you haven't.
The scourge is fuckin sick man one of my all time favs from them
Carlton Banks Dude, the end of Ragnarok is something from another planet. After years listening that song, stills giving me cheers that âto ourselvesâ
Somewhere in time...
Absolomb is ridiculous as well
Sail upon the open skiiiiiieeeeessss...
Now that P4: Hail Stan is out, it can be said without question that this entire album is his best vocal performance ever. So much emotion and range (both in pitch and in versatility)!! I've always loved his vocals but he really blew it out of the park with P4
Oh man, i was not emotionally prepared for the hit on the feels this album has given me. What spencer does on Satellites is killing me â€
I still think he sounded best on p2. Don't know why exactly.
Mans hit a G5. Insane
He's awesome! He definitely doesn't get the credit he deserves as a vocalist.
they're 'only' one of the most popular progressive/heavy/djent bands... they have a super loyal fan base and really good marketing. they're awesome and they do get the credit they deserve.
@@Johannesbatt I'm talking about Spencer as a vocalist more specifically. I get that tastes are tastes, but most of the time people talk about his vocals they are talking about how they dislike them. From a technical perspective he's fantastic and yet people rarely mention that.
I think is cuz many of the old fans were introduced to periphery/bulb as an Instrumental band so then they got a vocalist and pissed off the OGs.
@@deadmanwithpitchforkarms8376 i agree. For example the first song u heard from periphery was scarlet. The first thing i thought was that the vocals were among the best i ever heard and when i looked in the comment section many said that his vocals destroyed the track for them and im like what. And then i listened to more of their tracks and his screams are just as good.
Please do Sam Carter of Architects!
Yes pleeeeease!
Now that would be interesting.
Andrea Piola it really would be. I really like his vocal style and Iâm trying to replicate it into my own. Iâm seeing them in April as well.
@@quasarsoul3768 you will not be disappointed ;)
Agreed!
There's a live performance of Ragnarok where he belts an A5. It's incredible performance
What about Daniel Tompkins?
Agreed. Gotta cover Daniel Tompkins. He's a genius.
yep
yez pliz
Dan is my spirit animal
Yes please
I'm not sure who has the video, maybe Misha's instagram, but there's this video of him going from his deep growl low all the way up to his highest high in a like a stairwell. It's mind blowing. I'm sure now he could do it way better, as I think the vid was from 3 or 4 years ago.
I would love to see that video. Someone post that shit below....
instagram.com/p/-bUWSdDP4N/?igshid=b6aqvl24exg6
Not a growl but this may be the one youâre referencing.
@@BobbyHutchSanchez Just randomly seeing this now and obviously way late, but this is not it. It was definitely his deep growl like vocal beginning.
Totally agree with most on here. Spencer is hands down one of the BEST metal vocalists in the business today. The band as a whole is just off the freakin charts in my book and Spencer is the perfect fit. There are so many Periphery songs that just leave me speechless everytime I listen to them. Saw them live in KC last year at the end of Periphery III tour. Simply amazing!
Corey Taylor is way better. Spencer just has vocal range... but his tone is like a girl singing in cleans....
@@eduardo4683 all I said was, he's ONE of the best in my opinion. Corey Taylor is fine. Completely different style so stupid comparison and take your negative comments elsewhere. No one cares dude.
@@eduardo4683 you're honestly a fucking loser...
Dan Tompkins of Tesseract is *the* best vocalist in prog and metal, imo. His tone is perfect, his range is ridiculous, his screams are awesome and his technique is amazing.
There's no denying that Spencer is good at what he does, however, for me and many others who share my opinion, his cleans tone is just not suited to heavy music. To me, his cleans sound too theatrical, better suited to theater, stage productions.
Just my two cents.
@Eduardo Carmona I agree and it's obvious to non-fanboys that you were only stating your opinion and not hating.
Hey for the eager trolls talking about other places on YT they've heard the intro song, it's a royalty-free song from CZcams's public audio library. The song is called Thor's Hammer and you can download it here by searching "Thor's Hammer" czcams.com/users/audiolibrarymusic there isn't a direct link to the song, however. But, yes, this does mean a lot of channels have used it. But, I didn't discover it by taking it from another channel - I was searching the library for a rock song that is copyright-free. Just so ya know ;) And now I'm on the lookout for a new intro song because this one is definitely used on too many other things, haha. Thanks, everyone.
VoiceHacks PLEASE do Matt Corby
Want me to write one for you. Then that way no one else will have it
You should get Dimensional Dryft to write one for u! He is a super badass guitarist who has toured and he is also a badman with production mixing etc He has several releases as well. He would DEFINITELY kill it just have to see if he has time. Btw, thanks for the quality videos, I stumbled onto them the other day and theyve all been great. Appreciate u!
My boys Nothing More getting some recognition
Welp, I guess it's time to do Satellites by Periphery review. His highs are incredible on that song.
if you like Spencer then you would also like Rody Walker from Protest the Hero :]
Go fuck yourself
Itâs funny, cause right after they toured with Protest, Spencer stepped up his vocal game on P2. I hear a lot of Rody in that album
@@fullypeeledproductions5860 u mad bro?
OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO NO ONE EVER TALKS ABOUT SPENCER
Spencer is definitely the most diverse & talented vocalist in the technical metal scene imo. Translates so well live too.
The A5 at the end of Ragnarok is when I knew he was going to impress me forever.
he is absolutely my favourite vocalist of all time, and he is the primary reason why periphery is my favourite band of all time. the power behind his belts is unlike any other vocalist i've heard in modern metal. truly one of a kind. for over a decade, he's been belting notes in the middle of the fifth octave and sustaining them for a crazy amount of time. the songs ragnarok, the scourge and wax wings show this super well.
Check out their song called Ragnarok (specially the end) or Stranger Things, he is the man.
I love how he is able to combine so many scales when doing cleans he adds so many dissonant notes and harmonies
That high at 2:16 gives me chills everytime đđâ€â€
He hits a G5 on the song Satellites. By far the most beautiful vocals Iâve heard in any song đ
Periphery fans all over here including me đ
Peripheral forever
Great stuff Mary! Spencer is one of my all time favorite vocalists. Heâs a huge inspiration to what Iâd like to become as a vocalist. Keep up the great work!
What about Rody Walker of Protest the Hero? Varied/playful vocals on a lot of tracks, and it's super taxing to try singing it. (Clarity, C'est la Vie, Sequoia Throne are good examples)
FINALLY! Someone does Spencer!! Absolutely incredible vocalist. I'm glad so many people share the same curiosity of spencer. I use to take opera vocal lessons from a lady that had been singing professionally for 23 years. I let her listen to a lot of spencer and every single time she told me he's singing improperly and he's going to destroy his voice.
I told her that he hits all his notes live too. I let her listen to a lot of stuff. apparently she still doesn't believe he's an anomaly. Idk how he does it and that's what's so amazing about him.
Please analyse Dan Tompkins too, so much amazing material to choose from!
Lukas Magyar from Veil of Maya pls
Ehtesham Ali Moeen nah
Especially how he sings the chorus in Mikasa!
One of my singing inspirations is James LaBrie from Dream Theater (especially Images And Words & Awake era). My clean singing range is very similar (also with controlled vibrato) and Iâm doing all that I can to maintain it. I also perform Extreme Metal vocals too, akin to the likes of Dave Hunt (Anaal Nathrakh), Chuck Schuldiner (Death), Classic-era Chris Barnes and Corpsegrinder (Cannibal Corpse), Frank Mullen (Suffocation), Classic-era Mike Akerfeldt (Opeth, Bloodbath), etc...
Subscribed because you wrote this... "This vocalist doesn't really get the credit they deserve, I haven't seen too many reaction or analysis videos on him from other voice teachers. But as always, you asked for it and I'm here to deliver! "
Yes Spencer, Misha and the whole team is phenomenal! Maybe many people don't like them, especially who are envious about what they have achieved in the industry.
Iâd be incredibly interested in your take on Maynard James Keenan
his voice remains a mystery to me
all this aggression and his insane mix of distortion and vulnerability in his voice makes him one of my favourite singers
Love your videos, keep them coming :)
This is awesome stuff Mary! So much more informative than a regular 'react' video. I really enjoyed the breakdown of the technique involved!
He has the best control Iâve ever heard with that kind of range from singing to screaming.
From their first album to now Periphery IV: Hail Stan coming out, itâs crazy to see how his vocals improved so much.
This is such a great video. You mention a lot of bands that are similar in style but not in genre; like comparing Johnny Hopkins from Nothing More and Anthony Green from Circa Survive is genius.. but I wouldn't have put those two ranges together since the timbres come off so different. Definitely looking forward to more vocalists like Spencer!
Marcus Bridge
You should do a video on Marcus Bridge, the vocalist from Northlane!
He is an insanely good vocalist. Great vocals and great screams. Beautiful voice!
Yes, heâs doing fry screams. Also, as far as I know, he is a trained vocalist; how much training heâs had I have no clue about, but he was trained for music outside of metal. I can say for sure heâs as good live as he is recorded, heâs probably the best singer Iâve ever seen live.
I always say! â Itâs never magicâ thereâs usually a lot of hard work and/or training that goes into it for sure đ€
I grew up with Spencer. Had no idea he was as talented as he is until he was announced as the singer of my then favorite band back when they'd fone through Casey Sabol and Chris Barretto. Awesome channel btw!
I didnt realize he's this good until someone breaks it down. Wow.
Spencer definitely hits an F#5 in Ragnarok, and he might have hit a G5 since then, but I'll have to do some digging to confirm.
Spencer... My favorite vocalist... â€ïž
This new album is insane. I met him and saw them live in NYC and I love his vocals so much. The raw emotion he puts into Satellites is amazing. Definitely the best song off the new album
This band deserves to be headlining more festivals
Spencer is also a producer, He produces vocals for bands at his studio 'Mystery Studio's. He'd learn a lot from others doing that as well as touring with many different bands.
I feel like this video was a little lackluster in terms of coverage of Spencer. The amount of tools there are out there that you could use to take a deeper look at his vocal style means this video could have had way more depth. Juggernaught and Periphery 3 had stems released and P4 will too when it's released so you can isolate vocal tracks. The range place points to a lot live shows of him pulling some cool stuff off. I know this video was "What is Spencer Doing?" but if you went more in depth into how he does it I think you could have pulled a bit more traffic with this video and it would have been overall more helpful. I know you were saying that you lose monetization for these types of videos but if you put a bit more into it and point to your other videos showing how to get started doing these things (Like you did) you could push the incoming traffic towards your monetized videos. I'm going to watch your intro series and your belting series but if you covered more you could have pointed to more playlists for us to watch. Either way it was a good video and I couldn't have clicked on it fast enough but I was a little disappointed by the end. My 2 cents. Thanks Mary.
I would love to hear you breakdown Layne Staley. Heâs been my favorite singer since the FaceLift album. When Alice In Chains did Love Hate Love Love at the Moore, it haunted me. Ever since I discovered Alice In Chains I have found Layne to have what I think is the most unique vocals in music. I discovered your channel when you broke down the 3 Nightwish singers and have dug your channel ever since due to how you go about putting your stamp on their technique. That is why I would love to hear you explain Layne. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for doing one on Spencer, he's just got such a good sound and doesn't get the recognition he deserves. My suggestion would be reacting to Dickie Allen, the dude is an absolute monster and it would be legendary to hear what you've got to say about him and his vox!
Hey Mary you are awesome! Can you talk about Russell Allen from Symphony X?
I've heard him say in some random Facebook video once that the key to expanding his crazy range has been to keep singing songs that push against the upper limit of your range until you're completely comfortable, then try something just a little bit higher and repeat those baby steps. I have yet to try this but it sounded completely logical. It's like increasing weight and reps for lifting. As long as you expand gradually, patiently and carefully you may get incredible results. Never found that video again though :(
I asked him how he got his technique. He said just keep on singing lol which is correct! I love practicing PI
Gives me shivers when he hits the highs!
3:30 I thought I heard that Spencer received training from Rody Walker of Protest to the Hero after the criticism Spencer received for his performance on Periphery's first album, but I can't seem to find a source to cite. Spencer certainly emulates Rody's style on a number of songs on Periphery II and they have toured together, so maybe there is a connection.
probably my favorite analysis video. new subscriber! but he did say in an interview he started out actually low and trained himself singing along to songs out of his range. This album is by far his best vocal performance as far as consistency and confidence. since chester he is my favorite. he has not just power but such emotion. he means what he sings.
Spencer and Periphery are absolutely incredible! Thanks for doing this. Could you do one for M. Shadows from A7X and Lukas Magyar from Veil of Maya?
he is really good live as well!
I would love to see a video dissecting Dennis Tvrdik's vocal performance in the song Fire! by Affiance. :)
Please consider it, as he is one of the most under-recognized vocalists in Metal today.
Great analysis!
Absolutely loved this video and I'm a huge fan of Spencer/Periphery. He's been a big influence to me as a vocalist for sure
The Screams seem angry to me. But then again Iâm â70âsâ! Bostonâs high range of Brad Delp (More Than A Feeling) reached the âhigh rangeâ of Spencer! The âGrowlingâ/âScreamingâ detracts from his true phenomenal voice! Lune is Spencerâs Gold Medal!!
Thank you so much for doing this video!!!
Boy do I love this channel. Keep up the awesome work!
So glad this channel was suggested to me! Maybe CZcams is useful after all! Definitely subscribed and belled to see what I can do as a highrange Baritone.
Didn't see him on the video list but I'd love to see a vid on Chris Barretto of Ever Forthright/Monuments/The HAARP Machine!
By far my favorite vocal channel! How about one on Spiritbox or Texas Cut Throat!?
His approach changed drastically from the first to second Periphery album. Forget where I heard this, but he was on track to losing his voice while touring for the first album and had to retrain. The results are amazing, a credit to his talent, and he sounds excellent live (saw him during the Select Difficulty tour).
This is great! I'm super happy I stumbled into this, very informative.
Please talk about Myles Kennedy if you haven't already
He is amazing! And every bit as good the few times I've seem them live!!
So, he doesnât fry. Everything high or screamed heâs doing is pure head voice. What he does (heâs said this many times in his series with Chris Liepe) is uses the break that happens when you really push your head voice with compression. Luckily, the way he screams is totally doable for baritones with a majority of his material (his highest distorted note that iâve heard was a G5 in Satellites which is very high for a baritone but thatâs a rare occasion). Iâm a baritone D2-F5 with my chest pushing to around G4, and I can sing along to most periphery tunes.
Can we please get a video on Sam Carter of Architects? His vocal style is something I'd really like to figure out how he does. Especially in the song Royal Beggars
Such a unique voice.
I would like to see a video about Thomas Giles from Between The Buried and Me, he has an unique scream as good as his clean voice.
Adrian M some of the best growls hands down, love his voice overall too
Hey Mary, can I ask what you think of the vocals of Anders Fridén from In Flames? I'd like to understand his voice, and what he's been doing in the past albums they've released.
one of the best voices in progessive today.
I'm so glad I found your videos, this series is awesome. I wish you'd do a Chino Moreno one đ
One of my bucket list items is to get formal vocal training. I believe I have a good voice, and have vastly enjoyed my experiences in choir and the occasional solo and duet work, but I want to take my potential as far as it will go, because I love singing, and I want to do it well.
I love Spencer, he's not of this world, I swear đ
React to Monochromatic Black - The Herd. It's a new band but their singer is a beast. Her screams are amazing!
Hey Mary! Great video, as always. I was wondering, what do you think of Brandon Saller (Hell or High Water/Atreyu)? I think he has a super unique voice with a great "texture" and a damn good range. Listen to Hell or High Water "Gimme Love", "Hail Mary", or "Find the Time to Breathe" if interested. I'm really interested in learning how a vocalist can develop texture and personality in their voice.
I can't stop to singing reptile
Saw them a few years ago, was such a great performance.
What technique is he using on their song "the bad thing" when he screams at the end of it
"Give it to MEEEEEEE"
Can't believe you mentioned Circa Survive, major creds
I would love if you did a video on Jeremy McKinnon from A Day To Remember!
I'd love to have your take on Jason Aalon Butler from Fever 333 (and Letlive) especially on a featuring he did with Pierce The Veil some years back, such a bluesy voice in that one. "Tangled in the Great Escape"
Talking about Spencer, it'd be awesome to see what you have to say about Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath too :)
I know he doesn't do metal music but Anthony Green: (circa survive, Saosin, the sound of animals fighting) that dude can belch! Please please please, do a reaction to Anthony Green đđđ⧠đ€
PLEASE do Josh Gilbert and Howard Jones. Theyâre amazing clean vocalists and Iâd really like to understand them more
Could you please do a video on Anders Friden from In Flames? The only analysis video I could find about him is in Russian.
Thanks!
Awesome video!
Please do one of matt heafy!!
I had no idea what you were talking about 70% of the time but it was damn fascinating
Could you take a look at Garrett Russell from Silent Planet? I'm not sure how he's achieving his sound. Most of the time his voice is audible in his screams, it's not full on distortion.
Mary - as a total curve-ball. Would you break down the vocals in our track "What's Up"? It'd just be really cool for a low key unsigned band like us to get some insight into what we're doing well and what we're doing badly, vocally speaking and we're huge fans of the channel. You are absolutely awesome and we love every video you've done. Fascinating and so well presented. PS. Eye makeup ON POINT. Love you
I grew up with him.
First video of this channel and Iâm freaking stoked I just found you! Subâd!!
Can you please listen to Corey Taylor from 2001 or 2002 during the Iowa era. I canât tell if itâs all false chord with great breathing to hold notes for a long time or a mix of fry and false chord. I also donât know what Iâm talking about with screaming so I could be completely off. Thanks
If you search "Corey Taylor Slytherin" on CZcams you'll find a couple videos of him performing and recording with a young band in 2002. I don't know how much help it would be but you can see him doing those style screams without the mask and jumpsuit. I'd definitely love to see an analysis of that footage.
Shawn Gilbert Iâve watched it like 10 times already lol. I agree, itâs awesome to see him scream in that era without a mask. Now Iâm just hoping for some studio footage of them making Iowa. Maybe for the 20th anniversary.
First time I heard his voice was on jetpacks was yes. Amazing
This was really interesting! You should definitely do Tommy Rogers from Between the Buried and Me. He has a pretty crazy screaming I donât think any vocalists come close to
