"Lonely is the Word" (Black Sabbath/Dio) live sing-through/rehearsal by Vocal coach Mary Z
I don't know what to do some days so I just need to sing more for the hell of it. If I overthink it I'll never upload anything and I do my best if I don't get too formal with the recordings or editing so Here it is! I fade out the end because it's just instrumental after a point. RIP RJD

    You are not wrong......Any "talent" show in America will not advance harsh vocals, while overseas the judges actually likes those vocals and when some don't like it they still recognize the hard work a vocalist puts in to sound like that. Talent is nothing without the hard work, (hours, weeks, and years) it takes to get really good.

    My vocal range is G2 - G5. I have worked hard on my upper register because I always felt out of place. I have always sang alto for choirs but got frustrated and never understood why I kept falling in to tenor harmonies when sat next to them. I always thought it’s just because I was rubbish at harmonising but I had no trouble harmonising with a soprano for duets and similar things. Understanding that my range is not too dissimilar from a tenor and that it is absolutely normal and doesn’t make me weird/odd, makes me feel much better.

    Awesome 👏🏼 well done! 👍🏼 what mic did you use? Seems like same level no matter where you are 🤷🏼‍♂️ and I don’t see a mic 🎤 (ps I’m the same sometimes with content - even though I have like a million ideas lined up have trouble picking the ONE that I’m inspired to do 😂 good to know I’m not alone in that ‘simply singing’ is the most inspiring usually because after al, it’s why we started this all, right? 😂

      @@voicehacks THANKS! I totally LOVE that you didn't use pitch correct, or use a pre-recorded version and then mime (too many coaches do that leading students to think that they are 'perfect' - which I think only harms the student with that perception, like they have to achieve perfection... ugh!)

    Surprised that you needed to go into your head voice to hit the C#5 at the end of the song. Are you a contralto?

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks Před 8 dny

      Yup 😭😭 D5 is my absolute belt limit on the best day ever so when it gets to C5-D5 it is very contextual as to whether I can belt it. My belt range starts down at F2/G2 😅 so many times I don’t like doing Dio in the original key, this song fits okay for me but most of the time I’d like it down a whole step

  • @intthesky
    @intthesky Před 9 dny

    Hi! I'm quite confused, I'm untrained and throughout my whole teens wanted to be a soprano until I found out my natural voice was lower, so I embraced it and felt really comfortable singing male singer's songs and karaokes in Lower keys. However, I'm not sure about my range.. the lowest I can hit (without warming up) is D3 but with vocal fry I hit F1. Then my highest comfortable note is G5.. am I a heavily underdeveloped contralto? My voice vibration is deep and my timbre is dark as well

    Your voice is very powerful. I like the amount of twang you were using and the fry (I presume for the raspy vocals). I know you have a relatively lower voice for a female, and I can really appreciate that you were using support properly, and even in the higher notes you were killing it. I could also tell you really enjoyed singing it. I could certainly use that video to learn a bit. I have been using your vocal placement method for about 5 years now, and it really does work. Here "The Joker line" is very important to maintain that twangy sound if I understood your method correctly. It was very easy to learn for me, yet it quite possibly might be one of the most crucial methods I've ever used for singing (except breath support which I had to figure out on my own since no tutorial actually helped me. However, Chris Liepe explains it in the closest way to how I activate and use support). There are many scammy "vocal coaches" who spread misinformation (especially scientifically incorrect things). But you know your stuff and you're trying to be as accurate as possible. You're one of the only few gems of vocal coaches on CZcams.

    Or, maybe the original never cared or wanted to have a better sounding voice, or wanted it to sound that way. And the replacement needed vocal training cause they couldn’t sing at all. Either way sound alone won’t tell anything. I’d focus more on pronunciation, delivery. One wrote the original songs, and dings them how they wrote them. Does the other? Either way who cares, just like Paul McCartney who cares. The world will keep on turning, and burning. Just ask Billy Joel

      Don’t overthink it! Just say Nnnn the typical way you would and it will work. I just don’t want people to do an airy “HN” type of sound. I am not sure why people love to overthink this video. It’s just a singing video and there are far more important things to worry about or overthink in the world. If the exercise is helpful, great. If not, don’t do it. That easy.

    It's not just her looks and singing, it's her behavior and songwriting. As a late teen, she seemed cool, mature, and beyond her years. As she got older, she seemed to get less and less mature somehow. Acting more like a 20 or 30-something stuck in middle school, writing immature emotionally shallow songs.

    Try tuning down from 440hz to 432hz. Maybe try a different instrument to sing from. It's pretty hard to work out A major on the keyboard.. using C and using all white notes, is easy. But, my ears like the sound of a guitar or bass tuned to 432hz( with perfect temperament, eg, make sure that the harmonics are "in") But i grew up playing guitar..but, piano.....?? It's still fun to try to play it.

    Really struggling with this but can't afford lessons - what I'm experiencing is the moment I attempt to add breath to the fry, the sound becomes choked and the fry disappears. Any recommendations? Also, where should you be feeling the sensation of that "rumbling" ? Is it supposed to stay low in the throat like true vocal fry, or does it raise?
