First lady singer of Nepal Melwa Devi Gurung was born in 1954 B.S. in Rumjatar, Okhaldhunga. At an early age, she entered the court of Shree 3 Chandra shamsher due to her singing career. She died from stove blast while cooking in Kolkata, India, in 2012 B.S.
From a very young age, there was talk of her beautiful singing in the village. Upon hearing that she could become a famous singer in the future if she found a suitable place, her father brought her to Kathmandu, Singha durbar. After knowing about her singing talent, shree 3 Chandra Shamsher planned to keep her inside palace as a trainer. Finally, she stayed at the palace as a music instructor. Later, Chandra Shamsher had named her 'Melwa Nani' at the time of the training. Before that, no one knew what her name was. After being named, Chandra Shamsher had arranged her for two 'Chhit ko dhoti', 'Cholo' and one Mohor payment per two days, and also arranged for staying in the tenement house on the north side of Singha Durbar for two years. She left palace in 1985 B.S. and moved to Calcutta.
