    Great bike. Had one of these for 6years and rode it hard always. Never once let me down. Was a bit hard on chains and sprockets but that was probably the way it was ridden. It did wheelies, burnouts, got lent out and still went well. Clocked up 100 000 klms. Added a grease nipple to the steering bearing access position.

      Yes, you are right. These are a perfect, go anywhere type of machine. You can do whatever you want with one of these and they will still be by your side ready to go again.

    Yes another great video - i’m becoming a fan! - wish i had seen this before my current purchase which has now been nearly 2 years trying to get it sorted - as you mentioned in the carb overhaul video the vr’s seemed to be a culprit in bike running properly - not sure why as when i look at the wiring diagram the wires exiting vr just seem to go to earth and P battery.
    Its mostly all fun and for a retiree an excellent interest - having someone available via these vids is a great help to the home mechanic.
    I just replaced the head gasket and that all seems to be ok now - carbs currently soaking in kero.
    Cheers RB

      Hi, Glad you are enjoying the videos. Yes, it is a strange thing that happens with the VR is that it can cause strange things to happen which has no direct route. Modern vehicles are also like that where your windscreen wipers can start working on their own because your alternator has entered 'smart' charge mode???? Makes it very difficult to diagnose many faults on modern stuff. This not to say that the F650 is a modern vehicle, because it isn't but it just shows how things were starting to go when it was new.. Nice to have you on board.

    You are a gem my friend! I've been watching your videos for quite a while now, and just 3 days ago seen a beautiful F650 online. Ran 25.000kms, it's straight from Austria, and the knowledge I gained from your videos helped me identify any and every problem with it when I went to buy it yesterday. Bought it for 1400£, and it truly is a beautiful bike. Thank you for your work!

    Great video, helps tremendously for a Funduro I’m opting to buy these days!
    With regards to the notoriously overheating voltage regulator (3:47), I wonder if it can be „pimped“ with a tiny 12V active cooling fan connected to ignition positive (must be one of those wires right there to harvest from) and mounted on top of the cooling fins to pump fresh air all the time 🤔
    All replacement parts I see online are the plain old (and failed) design with only the passive cooling fins.

    • @RestorationBiker
      @RestorationBiker  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi, Yes sounds a good idea. It is only because it doesn't get the cooling draft across it that makes it fail. So, anything that deals with that, I think, would be a benefit to it. If you make such a thing, up, let me know how you get on as I would be very interested in the results. Most people re-locate it so that it is in a greater airstream, which cures the fault.

    I had two of these bikes and they were both great machines. I didn't manage to go very far with them, they were mostly commuter bikes but great around town and in traffic. I have to admit my feet did tingle a bit after an hours use due to the vibration.

    You omitted the following: (1) The steering head bearings have very little grease from the factory, loosen them and force some more grease in with your fingers (top and bottom). (2) There are three places where electric wire insulation tends to chafe through, add insulation and/or re-route the wires. (3) The clutch cable is at an angle where it emerges from its sheath and tends to chafe through, re-route the cable lower through the front of the bike so the cable and wire are in a straight line.🕊️
    PS The Chain Gang (F650 owners in the USA) have made servicing and repair videos down to the last nut and bolt. The owners club in Australia have documented the electrics and electronics brilliantly, there are so many small variations on F 650s🌻

      Bon jour mon ami. These bikes are superb. You can still get all of the parts for these easily. They are quite cheap to buy and maintain. They ride brilliantly, I love them. Cost for one at the moment in England (may be different in France) is about £1500 - £2000 for a nice one in good condition, about 1995-99. And, yes they are brilliantly reliable. • @RestorationBiker
      @RestorationBiker  Před rokem

      Hi, The rear shock on these is quite simple . All you need to do is make sure the bolts that you are going to take out are 'lubed' before hand with plenty of WD40. I always take the rear wheel off to give you some access. Take your time, and if you come across a problem, that makes you get annoyed. Go inside have a cup of tea, and when you go back to it it is so simple. I speak from experience as I have done that hundreds of times over the last 50 years. It really works. Take pics as you go, then you have a reference when you are putting it back. Let me know if you get any problems, and I will help.

    • @tonebonetones
      @tonebonetones Před rokem

      @RestorationBiker Its a really good bike. Much appreciate the reply, mate. I see there is a linkage of sorts. Are there any bearings involved, I wonder? Yeah, my bike was not well looked after, and the bolts are well time corroded around the shock bottom and linkage so a lot of WD 40 prepping and I think I'll wire brush the bolts to get nice clean 'flats' for the spanner to grab.

    • @RestorationBiker
      @RestorationBiker  Před rokem

      @@tonebonetones Hi, yes there are needle roller bearings in the linkage. On the one I restored I had to replace one of the bearings because it was dry and rough. Take your time, and take a lot of pics to help you know how it goes back. Be prepared to remove things if it will help with your access. I take off as much as I can to make any job I do easy. I know guys who take nothing off and struggle to do any job.
