A Great Fan - Lakewood 101 Brace Blade Box Fan from the 2000s

  • This seems to be the most hated fan among collectors, the Lakewood 101 brace blade box fan. This is the first one of these I've found, and the first time I've evaluated one of these closely.
I was pleasantly surprised by the unit. I really do not understand what all the negative commentary about these things is for. These cost less than half of what the P-223 cost back in the 80s, and I do think it's at least half as good. It consumes very little electricity, it makes very little noise, and it moves a decent amount of air. If used properly under normal conditions, these do last just fine.

I recently saw a few of these fans in an early 1920s house that I was staying in on a vacation.

I think this is a classic example that when it was released it no longer had that classic Lakewood design/look so it was automatically hated. But now as time passed we look at it differently. Well done video and perspective.

Yup over time our standards go down.

I think you're spot on with that theory.

My dad got this same exact fan over 15 years ago as far as I can remember, and it was amazing. I really liked it, but sadly, something happened to the motor, causing it to no longer work and so we got rid of it about five years ago.

I've always liked these. Even at the time they were new, they were not bad fans. I bought one brand new back in 2003 just like the one you have. And I still have that fan. (Well, the motor from it anyway) The frame rusted out due to it being used every summer for like 7 years. It was a good fan.. and has served me well.. while other newer fans have failed.
The only thing I never cared for about these is that silly boombox cord. That was probably the most common reason people got rid of these.. since they probably lose the cord.. then throw out the fan and buy a new one.
Other than that. I really don't hate these. The motors, I have no idea who actually made them..years ago I looked up the patent numbers for the motors and found the patent online. But I can't recall who made the motors for Lakewood or if Lakewood actually made them.
As for the braced blades. The older ones were generally better made..I'm talking about the 1998-2005 models. It seems later on Lakewood really started cheaping out on stuff, and the blades and motors got worse. As for the overall build quality. But the pre 2005 ones were built reasonably well, in my opinion.
Lakewood folded in 2009, and from what I could find, Jarden (Holmes Sunbeam, etc) bought the patents for the blades and the boombox cord design.
And Aerospeed (CamAir) bought the rights to the fan designs.

I sure would be interested in what the logic was behind the detachable cord. I really can't think of what benefit it offers.
I do agree the blade is significantly better on the late 90s model I have. Far more pitch. The cheapening of the Lakewood models in the late 2000s is definitely evident, of course it's just the result of them trying to survive a few more years.

I prefer Lasko fans, but I must say these fans are very nostalgic because I used to see these everywhere and my grandmother’s house!

I'm in full agreement. These are not bad fans at all. I have two of these and both are good performers. The earlier ones with the 1.2 amp motor and the steeper pitched blades are obviously better performers but even the later ones with the 0.68 amp motors are still plenty powerful. I remember all sorts of videos and comments bashing these fans and it's really a shame these are so hated. Even the earlier models generated a fair amount of hate despite being powerful fans. There's far worse fans out there. Even if these are among the worst of the Lakewood products, they're still landslides better than the newer Holmes and Aerospeed offerings. These don't make any annoying sounds either unlike a lot of newer fans. It's truly one of the last decent box fans produced.
I remember seeing these everywhere back in the 2000s and 2010s. All different variations from the basic one seen here to the 227. While the numbers are indeed dwindling, I do still see them from time to time which also reinforces the fact these are not junk and are in fact quite good. Many of them are 20+ years old now and still work just fine. It's also a real shame these were so hated because it resulted in many of them being destroyed which only makes them more difficult to find today. The Lakewood brace blade absolutely never deserved all the hate it received.

The 227 is a really neat model, definitely would like to find one some day.

I believe Emerson Collie was one of the first people to complain about these back in the late 2000s and it just caught on. I remember following suit for a few years. In recent times, I agree that the Lakewood brace blade didn't deserve the amount of commentary it did. While definitely cheaper than their earlier box fans including the 3rd gens, it still has a decent build to last while also moving a good amount of air. I'd even say it was better than some of the other box fans from the time, particularly the Midea made ones (AKA the wang blades)
It's especially steps ahead when compared to the later Holmes and Aerospeed fans.

If I recall he did a video on this fan or maybe another model where he ran over it with a 4 wheeler

I’ve always liked these. I did videos of this model and the 202 models back in 2014 saying that they weren’t that bad. I think the cabinet on these had thicker metal than the laskos of the time. The only thing that really bothers me with the cord coming out of the motor like that is when you have narrow windows and it pushes right into the window screen. I noticed the one you have must’ve been an essential home branded Lakewood because it doesn’t have the Lakewood brand on the grille.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  Před 11 dny

That is a good point about the cord for window use.

I don’t mind these, I actually like them better than the flower petal Lasko/Galaxy of the time, especially the ones where the cabinet is more like a circle than a square box.
