- World renowned supercar designer, Frank Stephenson, casts a critical eye over the West Coast Customs redesign of Justin Bieber's Rolls Royce!

Hey all! I just had to check out West Coast Custom's Rolls Royce kit car that they made for Justin Bieber. I love kit-cars and when consumers take design into their own hands and make their vehicles an expression of themselves, even sometimes improving on the great work of the designers, and I wish more people had the resources to do so! What do you think of the Uriel?
Hey Frank, Hope you are doing fine! Watching your videos is a pleasure. I am curious what cars do you own? :)
Great critique as always Frank! Would've loved your take on the design, maybe a rough sketch on a notebook. Patiently waiting to see your hands do some magic for our eyes!
I think you have not been true and open about your real perspective ans thoughts about this car... The concept is very beautiful... Just the design language of the lines going through out the car and front shape is where the design is lacking... I love the futuristic with unique aspect and elements of this car.. great work
Loved the video, thank you for showing us how design works, and how designers think. Thats really something fresh to watch on youtube.
It does look like a mobile neobrutal parlor, instead of an anonymous mass-market vehicle made sometime after 1999. Most successful is the wheel skirting incorporated into the profile, avoiding the deep incisions behind from the concept.
Frank has some very creative ways to say "crap" without actually saying it.
😂 That's 90% of an art directors job.
Lmao this is gold
It’s good to be able to say exactly why it’s crap and he has done that. That’s what constructive criticism is. I could see that it was crap but other than the hideous wheel covers I couldn’t specifically see why.
he is just jealous lmao, he can never do anything as close to this beauty, haters be hatin lol
@@joemama8243
He was extremely kind. Definitely not a hater in any way. He was specific and did an excellent review. If anyone is interested in how they could design a better looking car they would do well to pay attention to his suggestions.
"Not easy on the eye" is an understatement.
Saying that it is an understatement is an understatement
Saying that saying that it is an understatement is an understatement is an understatement
😆👏👏
Hideous would be more like it
When i think of cars, dis ugly. When i think of the chrysler building or that move metropolis.. this car dope
Problem I have with this car is that it resembles one huge body kit.
totally agree - it looks like they just stuck a large sized body kit on the top of it that doesn't cover all the way to the ground, so it just looks weird
One problem I have with this car is the entirety of it.
i like the style but the way the wheels stick out doesn't look good at all to me it reminds me of something homemade like someone tried to make a replica of the irobot audi i like the style but i don't love this, i feel if they flattened the side completely making the wheels flush so it's just a flat side with no indication of where the wheels even are then it could would
i also think the trunk is extremely weird on this design everything is flat everywhere but then theres an eggshaped trunk that almost bulges out so curved it is it just looks out of place
At least it's unique.
The iRobot Audi is one of the most gorgeous, timeless designs ever
when friends of yours made something horrible but you have to speak about it without saying it's utter shit to not make them mad.
Designers and would-be designers alike have to speak like this. This man here as actually very good at it. I spent some time in University for architecture and my god, if the kid-gloved "everything is 'interesting'" lingo doesn't wear on you right off the bat, it will get you at some point.
But,when you're having something critiqued in front of 40 people, you can't help but feel grateful for watered down bullshit.
You can’t afford the car
I Get that feeling too, not trying to bash Justin's style, It has a certain merit, but this car looks like strings at the circus to make the performers fly. If Rolls couldn't make the proto a reality this is a far cry facsimile. Should have started over with a custom chassis and called it "JB" instead of "RR", feel bad for Justin his CTS-V turned out nicer IMO and he has to like this thing because he paid for it. Justin just make your street aluminum (pop cans are cheap) and have them build an AC magnetic car that actually floats.
"brutalist architecture"
Well i just say its ugly shit .....and surprize , surprize i got more friends than before.....
Dat Lego Bonsai tree. What a man of culture.
Lego is awesome.
But way expensive
The art of bonsai irony, all about keeping it sharp and short. Master Chou rules.
Lego bansi tree on your desk = fuck you money
"Man of culture" if he had a real Bonzai tree, man that likes design related stuff regarding how much they cost!Yeah this Lego tree is more expensive than an actual REAL Bonzai tree :p
The concept vehicle looked way better than the customized one that was built. I love the way half the chrome spokes were visible in the concept and how most of the car was lifted off the ground. That’s what usually happens when a concept car is turned into reality.
This was a very polished and professional review, well done!
Frank Stephenson giving praise to this monstrosity, all while not bursting into laughter, is the ultimate April Fools Day joke. Well played!
Monstrosity is understatement. Its teribble taste, and west coast custom just had to swallow the pil, and go with justin, cuz, money.
I think his assesement was quite good (and honest).
His assessment is honest. Not all cars are done for the masses. For me- it’s a mess, but some things are cool about it. It’s a good first try- I think it could evolve into something cool- kinda like the Porsche Cayenne has.
Seriously, a monstrosity, no my friend, it isn't.
I just rage posted my comments then read yours message.
My prayer tonight is that you’re correct in that it’s a April Fools Day joke.
If so - this is the first - in my 47 years that I got punked for April fools day on April 3rd.
I know a lot of money went into it but I see those wheel covers and the body work and it just looks... Cheap.
I'm surprised they didn't put any Walmart hubcap Spinners on
It looks like some 80s American car from junk yard and put a new skin on.
I think it's actually quite attractive I just wish the proportions were different.
I'm a sucker for square hoods and wheel covers
It is cheap. Just the sidepanel is cool. But instead of modifying the sidepanel it self, they boltet like 10 extra inches onto this and missed to match front an d back. Should have went to Turin(?), you now the guys doing the 8C Disco Volante. Or like Rolls Royce themselfs
Showing us that no matter the amount of money, you cannot buy good taste.
It has the exact same amount of grace, humbleness, dignity, style and class as its owner. Not since James Bond's E-Type Jaguar has there been a truer personification of a man and his car. Ghastly.
My dad had an "E-Type" when I was a kid. I loved that car

After seeing this one, Multipla doesn't seem as bad choice as I thought it was...
You would think he would have taken some of his money by now and bought himself some taste.
Let's be honest Mr. Stephenson is being really nice, like really really nice. Like too nice, "Not easy on the eye"
This vehicle definitely shows how important the fundamentals of car design are. With a few tweaks and it would look much better. One of the big problems is just most lines seem random, they don't match together, they are just "there". You pointed out several of them, like those side lines on the rear panel, the rear lights are completely disconnected from the rest of the design and others, like the front has again some diagonal lines that don't match with the overall squareness of the front, plus the bottom part is incredible flat, while the top has some arch to it, which again causes disconnection between the elements.
Awsome opinion, nice insight to a professional desingers thoughts !! realy appreciate it, thank you so much ! :)
PS : I would so love to see this car with your updates !!

@@the_zakaria that's the point isn't it? If you notice it too much, they probably didn't do a good job.

Hey ! Can i call you " Franco the Automatic Design Guru". I know your Name is Frank, but Franco comes out when your Wizardry is at the Pinnacle. I love your Content , keep it Rollin' .
I have been painting and building motorcycles , cars and trucks my entire life. I appreciate the work that went in to the project, especially the studio grade stereo. The styling however is odd and doesn't compare to the prototype they were inspired by in my opinion. But hey if you can afford to throw $ around why not... Gives us body guys a job to do. Great review! I'd rather be seen in my custom 280z any day.. :)
Wow. That is spectacularly hideous.
But it is uniquely hideous**, as a RR hater like myself living in an afluente part of America, at least this would be a uniquely hideous car and not the 100th RR i saw that day 🤷
I hated it at first but Its growing on me
@@davidlevingstone4429 yo hi
It doesn't look like it's floating, it's an ugly cry driving on splindly visible wheels and for some reason they've put spot lights there to excentuate how stupid it looks.
hey Brian, just wanted to say that I really appreciate your work from movies to video games and everything in between.
I can't love the model, but I give it kudos for the nice try. They've put a lot of effort. That RR Concept though... MIND-BLOWING
Yes.. the rolls Royce next-100 concept is sick! But Mercedes Maybach Vision 6 is WAAAAY better.
@Motorsoul ss agreed
The Rolls Royce concept looks like perfection it's so beautiful. Bieber's version of the concept looks like a plastic chinese knockoff, it's hideous and lost everything that made the RR concept amazing lmao
The RR concept is very cool. Beiber shoulda just bought that instead of building this thing.
Man, that Rolls concept really is glorious vessel. And, as someone else replied, the Maybach Vision concept too. I’m into those two cars in a large way. This WCC design is truly unpleasant, just, ghastly. The front-end is so...*flat*...and frumpy, and Frank is showing these clowns an enormous amount of professional courtesy in his critique because, I think, he wants to pump up the thinkers and makers in this modern “coach-builder” niche - the niche itself is a very cool yet undeveloped market, because the cost is so damn high.
That reaction from Justin was just epic 😭
That concept Rolls was, in part created, for HBO's Westworld. Lady exits the Rolls and her Meta-material fabric of her simple dress transforms into stunning dark red evening gown. Obviously done via VFX.
I believe Frank is being very kind and respectful here. The guys that created this deserve a lot credit but the actual design itself leaves a lot to be desired.
Fairest assessment so far Tommy 👍 I like aspects of the car just like Frank. The covered wheels and lit spirit of ecstasy are cool but overall it's an over the top West Coast job for a pop star. If Justin loves it then I'm happy for him but seriously, classic design is best left to the experts like Frank
@@martin-1965 I totally agree. There's some potential in this design but overall it just missed for me. But Justin sure likes it so he's a happy client.
Thank you for putting my thoughts into words. : )
Smooth rear spats, stacked headlamps and something different with the rear lamps and standard looking rear number-plate aperture. Does this have adjustable height suspension to cope with road bumps?
I hope there will be a follow up video where FS draws his own version of The Wraith.

Hey Frank, major fan of the Channel and the opportunity to watch someone of your magnitude in the Car Design space giving honest, unfiltered opinions. And while we do share your fascination with this kind of "no holds barred" creations (be it the real World ones or the virtual kind) we do wonder what´s your opinion about what is probaby the exact opposite: Race Car Design. When Aerodynamics, efficiency and a (often thick) rulebook dictate the final product do you lose interest because of the constraints and lack of ability to let the imagination and pencil run free, or do you think there´s beauty in the ultimate quest for speed/cornering speed?
The focus of our Channel in this regard goes even a bit further we think, as we feature mainly Road based highly modifed Hillclimb Cars, which tend to be transformed into these very divisive monstrosities full of wings, canards, enlarged bodykits and whatnot. Do you think at that point a purist designer´s interest just fades considerably or there´s still an interest and a way to make those type of cars remarkable when it comes to looks and the emotion they can invoke on the public??
PS: Always good to see someone sharing an interest in Bonsai Lego trees and Bernois Bouviers ;)
i have long been thinking about the same question! glad that somebody else had asked!
Really good question and as a designer too I view race car design as the pinnacle. I’ve been lucky enough to work on many and love the balance but ultimately am drawn to the true form follows function aspect. The most beautiful car is the fastest as a race engineer once said to me. I believe there is space for designers to ‘beautify’ race tech but only to a certain point, beyond that it becomes styling which is where automotive design for road cars has brought us today. By the way hello Frank, how are you?
Ciao Matteo! Tutto bene?
Thanks for the view and comments! Race car design is, for me, the best kind of design! Efficient design can’t be anything other than beautiful and getting a stylist involved will only ruin the purity of a race car’s character. Real designers know that designing for performance guarantees beautiful aesthetics. Lousy designers will only screw it up by trying too hard to give it a “look” other than its own honest appearance. Not every bird needs to look the same and not every race car needs to look the same, different enough solutions exist to keep the design and engineering always a challenge to innovate.

You definitely helped me look at it in a different manner, I can see why somebody else would like it. I personally didn't really like the front grill area
Question:
1. Given how low the car is wouldn’t it end up scraping on the road if he’s coming down a slope an onto some flat road?
2. What’s gonna happen if he hits speed bump too fast? Or any speed bump? It looks like it would scrape against the front bumper
3. Given how wide the car is and how the wheel covers stick out wouldn’t he possibly be in the way if he parked on a curb
I’m assuming the wheel covers can be removed, cause if not he can’t change a flat tire, or air his tires up
Not to mention the car is so low that if he encounters any debris on the road he’s gonna have to the drive around or else it could damage the car

In the kindest way possible Frank seems to be saying this is a hunk of crap, like telling a 5 year old their painting is beautiful.
It’s incredibly ugly from any angle imo
The side view is not total garbage. But front and rear ends are beyond garbage.
For me, the problem with the trunk lid and license plate surround is how rounded and gentle the body creases are. Everywhere else has sharp lines, and suddenly we have this really curved piece. It looks like it belongs to a much older design.
For me its the same issue but also its too high for me, like the wheels are a bit exposed and it ruins it further. Should've been lower but its probably not practical.
It looks like one of those cars in low-mid budget sci-fi, where they needed to make the cars look futuristic, had enough money to build professional props, but not enough to hire professional designer. Like the vehicles from Upload Amazon series or I, Robot.
Are you planning to review aftermarket bodykits one day?

This car and it's design along with Franks critique of it displays the difference between "trained" designers and artists and crafts people. When one goes to school for art or design they are exposed to and put through a very rigorous process that serves to inform them on what is good decision making and what isn't. As important, one also learns a kind of language used to articulate a design or a work of piece of art as well as construct a dialogue about its success or meaning. Although I don't think the car is total loss the design doesn't achieve a higher level of success simply because the people involved simply don't have the education to make better design choices and decisions.
I like it, not as much as the concept it was based off but that's cause I didn't like the car to start with. The original car just looked like a rounded dodge charger with an uglier grill and hood ornament.
I'm really into cyberpunk kinda vibes (thought it was cool you referenced some of the car designs from the cyberpunk game) I've been modding my own car to look cyberpunk, but I started with a car that was already a good fit for the style, a 1990 Honda CRX. I've been trying to figure out my own asymmetrical mods to change the front but so far I've only got two different headlights (one side stock, one side aftermarket projectors with a halo light ring) but I'm trying to learn how to fab body kit sort of things and I'd love to play around with the grill being half the size and off to the side cause I have a half sized radiator off to the side anyways. Cool thing is the car only came from the factory with driver side mirror so it already had a small bit of asymmetry, even if only slight.
Most my current mods have been limited to lighting, I've added LED strips to the tops of the headlights to outline and accent, underglow, interior leds to light up the floors, light up trim accent on the dash, extra screens/gauges/small bit of out in the open wiring where it would look cool, a led neon looking flexible light bar that outlines the area behind the seats, and color changing led spot lights to the gauge cluster. The only body things I've changed is I added a carbon fiber hood with a front center vent this month but that changed the look of the front a lot. I do want to add rear wheel skirts, but I don't want it to be smooth and flush. I want to have it sink in just a hair and be black. The car is "mostly" white, doors are currently blue and front bumper is red cause junk yard parts, paint job comes last lol but the black will make a nice contrast and I feel it won't look as shocking since it will still look like a wheel well but also be covered. Figured it would look cool too to have a stencil spray paint styled cyberpunkish jolly rodger on each skirt.
Would love to see the result when you’ve got it ready Postal! 👍
Love the kindness in Frank's criticisms. His own work gives him every right to hate on the Beeb, but Frank bypasses the hater path. Pure class.
Because unlike the rest of us who impulsively try to shit on the design, Frank instinctively analyses it. As expected of a car designer.
Would really love to see more conversations from you on other kit cars or even body kits that alter the look of cars like Pandem, rwb, or other west coast one offs
I really really REEEALLLLLLLLY hate to say this.
I like it.
it's like the 1930s Rolls Royce Hidden wheel car or the 1935 Erdmann and Rossi 540K Mercedes. Even the 1928 Lockhart Stutz speed record car . Cord prototype
I'm not a designer. I am an artist but I'd simplify the side details lines as you pointed out. More defined head lights and the number plate recesse.
I love brutalist vibes so I'd go for more of a turret bunker roof line like the Lagonda 1975 1st clay model vibe shutters to hide headlights.
It is a coach build in the traditional sense. Remember in the 20s and 30s there have been some horrors even from master coach builders.
Which ones are those horrors from master coach builders Edgar?
I always give points for any design thats daring and radically different. For too much timidity in mass produced automotive styling these days.

Is there a Razzie Awards for design? There needs to be.
Great video! Enjoyed it.
To me this thing just looks like a body kit on top of an old car. It doesn't look like a new car.
If I had the money, I would cyberpunk the hell out of a vehicle. I would even let construct a few at the same time and pick the best (ones)....
I would have maybe used the headlights from the larger new generation Phantom to give it a more modern look, and to fill in the increased width between the grill and front wings.... and then think the intake ducts on the front could have been much more subtle / give the illusion of the cut-out space of the 103EX, and the tail lights I would have done something slimmer and more horizontal with the inner and outer edges matching the fender line and trunk lid. Completely agree on giving it more wild exhaust tips. Could have picked a Fighter Jet where Rolls-Royce provide the engine and use that for the design inspiration while having an interesting story tie-in.

I like your comments about stretching creativity and imagination, especially in a car world, that lacks varied forms and colours. Essentially to-day's designs betray a conservative fear of standing out, as it may not be safe, in the rather aimless, chaotic society in which we find ourselves. In the fifties/sixties the western world felt safe after the end of the wars and a new generation was restless to explode with creativity. I used to love looking at all the wild custom cars, when I was young. I also like your reference to architectural design for cars, a complete change from what we've always thought about car design. Maybe architecture would give more feeling of strength and security in this "wobbly" time.
