- Supercar designer, Frank Stephenson, reacts the the vehicles from Cyberpunk 2077!

Hi all...
You spoke and we listened...here is the video that was undeniable after the success of the GTA video that we recently released. This game pushes forward the traditional beauty of vehicle design but not in the future-tech way that I expected.
Enjoy!

Hi everyone! What's your favourite vehicle to use in Cyberpunk 2077? I love that they keep a lot of traditional beauty in these imaginings of future vehicles. What direction do you hope design goes in as we move toward the future?

@@kikyanwar1903 Caliburn is so much fun.
Glad you addressed the projection windows, I think that is by far the most exciting part of some of these cars, something I would like to see in the future.
I love the so called batmobile (rayfield caliburn) its both fun and beautiful in my opinion! I also love the sliding doors on all of the cars! great video, would be nice to hear more about the details as they are so many get some in game footage of you live exploring exited for part 2 lots more to cover would be fun to hear about the flying vehicles maybe the ambulance and corporate taxi aswell!
I'm like you Frank, bikes are my passion. Since I'm more partial to the cruiser and café style bikes, it's the Arch for me, all the way. Hope to own a real one some day. It can keep my Sportster 48 company. lol
"Who cares about aerodynamics when you're running something that looks like a fist" Truer words have never been spoken
It used to be said of Soviet jets "If you give it enough thrust, a brick becomes a plane"
And the sad thing is this is exactly what happens nowadays with almost every SUV out there... 😅
Dodge Charger: And that's when I took it personally
@@thanesgames9685 Not just soviet ones. The F4 Phantom II was aptly nicknamed a "triumph of thrust over aerodynamics." Though yeah, the record holder for that is probably still the MiG-25. Brick of a plane, and still holds several world records for speed and altitude even today.

Yeah , why not.
"80's representation of the future" is literally, word by word description of the Cyberpunk TTRPG by its creator, Mike Pondsmith.
Just goes to show that all things and issues aside, CDPR perfectly captured the feeling of the world.
That basically applies to the whole genre. Blade Runner, Akira, Judge Dredd (comics), etc.
In 1920 people imagined that there would be flying cars but look at us, 100 years later we still have wheels on them. The only thing new or innovative in this 100 year span is electric vehicles like Tesla. So I wouldn't be surprised if the cars in 2077 have wheels and outside world would be projected in them instead of having glass on windshield and windows. We as humans, always overestimate ourselves when thinking about future. It's great to see how cyberpunk developers overcame it and projected a real possibility of future instead of just imagination.
@@RohanSingh-bl2sq Except we do have flying cars, but they're too expensive and aren't permitted in a public airspace, so no one wants them.
@@RohanSingh-bl2sq - Electric cars were produced and designed before combustion ones, so no, it isn’t innovative at all. If you will ever visit BMW Museum in Munich, Germany there is pretty interesting electric cars history showed up and evolution in that subject. Now and then.
The very fact that he defended the developers for the glitches makes me like him.
@CZcams customer service no because if you understood the true story behind cyberpunks development process and how it was rushed horrifically... Development didn't actually start until late 2016 to mid 2017 and full development started close to beginning of 2018.... So the fact that the developers were able to get it at least that much finished regardless of all the bugs I have to give them props for at least completing such a large and ambitious project and goal in such short time while constantly being time crunched relentlessly by the big wigs and investors..... It may not have released In the condition it should have been in but bottom of the line the only point I'm making is, is that it WAS NOT the developments fault..... It all had literally everything to do with the big suit big wig investors pressuring and threatening the entire cdpr team to get it released or they were pulling the plug being the idiots they were thinking the game had been being developed for 9 years when in all reality cdpr had their hands completely full finishing the Witcher 3 and didn't even touch or think about cyberpunk until Witcher 3 was totally finished including patches dlc and everything which was late 2016 early 2017... Given all those facts and circumstances I admire the developers for doing the best that they were able to do with what they had to work with.
@CZcams customer service aside from the bugs especially after they were adequately patched, I found the game to be a pretty alright game experience with a good story, fun imaginative out there futuristic concepts, and a fresh game experience. Did I absolutely think it was beyond amazing and the best thing ever, no.... But did I enjoy the game and feel it had an air of fresh game story and experience about it, yes... That in no way makes me a fanboy. I just hate how everyone these days expects perfection when perfection has never once in the history of all time been possible at all whatsoever.

This aged so well, he said that it can take some time to work out the issues and make something great if you care about it, and they can go for anything in life, but he said that it took them a while to achieve what they wanted but ended up with one of the best systems of their time, and the same thing happened for cyberpunk2077, it is easily one of my favorite games of all time and it’s also as easily one of the best pieces of next gen gaming we have.
2.0 is amazing
"Retro-futuristic" fits perfectly with the overall aesthetic in Cyberpunk 2077. A lot of near-future sci-fi and especially cyberpunk sci-fi have this 80s vibe, not only in the cars, but also in the architectural style used in new buildings, the ultracapitalist society where corporations reign supreme etc.
I bet most of the developers took inspiration from "do android dream of electric sheep" book and "bladerunner" movie series.
@@RohanSingh-bl2sq Read a book called neuromancer by William Gibson, big influence for this game and the whole cyberpunk genre
Yeah, well, the "-punk" is exactly that. It's supposed to look like what the past thought the future would look like OR it's supposed to be what the future would look like based on the past.
@@The_Viktor_Reznov When the cyberpunk genre was conceived (inspired by 70's French sci-fi comics) it wasn't seen as retro though. The "-punk" doesn't stand for retro, it stands for the characters that fight their own oppression from the sidelines and the underground (though usually for selfish reasons), about the DIY aesthetic (all the grungy computer modifications of vehicles, buildings and bodies) and about the harsh unforgiving life the characters lead.
Sure, steampunk and dieselpunk started out as retro-futurism, but cyberpunk was based on the time where it was conceived in (and only became retro with time, after the 90's or so)
@@KarlSnarks I mean sure, yes, you're correct, but I would argue that definition somewhat evolved. It may not have started as retro but it is retro nowadays because simply of passage of time.
Dieselpunk, steampunk, atompunk, cassette futurism, cyberpunk, all of those follow more or less the same rules when it comes to image of the future.

The fact that you got the akira reference with the kusanagi is amazing!!! I read in an interview the designer specifically wanted to make an homage to the akira bike since the bike as well as the slide he does is one of the most iconic vehicles in animation.
Amazing for a non-connoisseur maybe but for a motorcycle design freak it’s just normal. 😉👍
The name itself is also a reference to Major Motoko Kusanagi - main protagonist of Ghost in the Shell
I swear the bike actually has the akira slide built in, snaps right into it way more than the other bikes when you hit the handbrake
As a player, I have to say from my experience, there's nothing like the QUADRA TYPE-66 "JAVELINA." It sounds like a monster, has a great high speed, handles like it's magnetically attached to any surface, and looks great inside and out. It's a beast and a must-have for high speed travel in-game.
This car has no business being nearly as fast as the turbo v-tech and handles like an aerondight, really hits the "muh nomad logistics" point right on the head.
I agree. The type 66 javelina is my go to! I really hope they can add the reaver skin to it shortly.

I was really mad at the NPCs. You can't leave it on the street, parking like a human being, you have to park on the sidewalk, watching out not to ever so slightly threaten a ped or the NCPD will be on your ass. The alternative is a ridiculous traffic jam, with cars incapable of overtaking yours.
@@mikiroony The NPCs in this game seem to drive worse even than NPCs in GTA 3 or GTA Vice City. And these are games made 20 and 19 years ago respectively.
You hit the nail on the head with mentioning the retro-futurism aspect. What many people don't know about Cyberpunk 2077 is that it's based on a late 80s tabletop RPG called Cyberpunk 2020; It's not meant to portray the future of our world but an alternate world where tech advanced differently.
I did pick that up during my playthrough and before the game came out and I was getting into the tabletop games world.

What many forget about cyberpunk 2077 is that it is based on a tabletop RPG, aka. it has a story which it continues to tell in a game.
So Cyberpunk is based around our universe but it starts to make changes here and there until those pile up around 1990 to 2000 and start changing the world drastically.
So their world is massively underdeveloped in a lot of areas where we are further and overdeveloped in others like cybernetics by our time period. I think around 1990 or 2000 in theirs they had already cyberware and around the 2020ies they had already the mantis blades cyberware.
So yes, this is pretty much a future imagined from 50 years ago.
That is also why their Net is different from our internet. The idea is the same but it turned out massively different.
This isn't our world in 50+ years, that is a parallel universe that was the same up to around 1880 or so and then split from ours. If that makes it easier to understand.

You knew everything that you needed to know about the game and it's universe to judge the cars fairly! The fact that you put put some research into this shows and I commend that!
The production values on this video are amazing.
I loved the analysis too! The focus on functionality is very interesting.
The Makigai Maimai's design seems to me as a combination between a Japanese car and the Romanian made late 80s Dacia 500 or maybe a Serbian Yugo. It fits perfectly with this game.
This was such an amazing video to watch, because someone who is clearly way above reviewing video game cars is not only doing, bringing his own expertise, but also he did enough research into the game where it feels like he cared about everything he said.
My favorite thing about the Porsche is the paint job. I love that metallic silver. With the industrial numbers stamped in the doors and windows. They simply did the Porsche justice. You can tell we have some real car enthusiasts working at CD Projekt Red
Amazing video. i loved the way you went at this. you speak with great passion thats coming from your enjoyment of your craft, and i appreciate that a lot. subbed
Nice to see your thoughts on these. The asemetrical cars took a bit for me to get used to but within the first day of playing I grew a liking to them.
Also, 1:12, THANK YOU.
This was amazing - I could have listened to you talking about the designs for so much longer!
I would love if you got back to taking a little more time per car, commenting on things like the visibility from the interior in the Makigai or the way the rear lights extend to the side on the Quadra V-Tec.
When you started talking about lines in a car design, tracing them with a pen in your old videos, I felt like for the first time I ever understood car design on a more deep level other than "it looks cool/bad".
Maybe if you handed him the control or showed him the game live, so he can take a closer look at whatever peaks his interest, that would be very interesting. He could talk while he discovers it.
You can really see the late Syd Mead's design philosophy in all of these designs. The game devs did well by him.
Love this vid! The delivery and point of view you bring is addicting to watch.
Amazing! There are definitely more cars in this game I would love to see you analyze/react to. For example the Villefort Alvarado (with four front wheels). Love your content! Greetings from Norway =)
Great video. The details on these vehicles is astounding. You can even open the hoods/boots on most vehicles.
Looooove the editing, very interesting, thanks!
There's a mod for the game that lets you modify your cars, better tires, better engine, shocks etc etc. You can make the little Mai Mai go about 230mph if you want. It's amazing how many flips it can do when you turn to quickly going that fast.
Loved a professional take on how the design feels, for it shows you know how a customer would feel.
I’d love to see an episode of Frank reviewing concept motorcycles since he loves them so much
you sound so excited while explaining them, i love that
