  • A young man, 25 years of age, develops jaundice and brain failure and dies within a week of his symptoms. What killed him? A scientific approach and inquiry led to the diagnosis of green tea extracts-induced liver failure, which he was prescribed for hair growth.
Health supplements, known as herbal & dietary supplements are consumed by millions of people world wide for disease prevention and cure.
    - BUT, there is a sinister side to the herbal and dietary supplements industry. Not only they are not tested for effectiveness and safety, in the United States alone, the cause for liver transplantation has exponentially increased only because of increased use of herbal and dietary supplements.
In this episode of The Liver Doc, we discuss the common herbal components in your daily use supplements that can cause severe liver injury, liver failure and death

Hello doctor, hope you’re doing well.
Firstly, Thank you very much for doing what you’re doing.
Can you please tell whether Forever Living products especially the aloe Vera gel (comes in yellow bottles) which they ask customers to drink on regular basis are safe for consumption or not?
My friend’s father (perfectly fit and in his late 40s) had been drinking these bottles since past one year and last month he was diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer. I suspect these products which they market as ‘herbal and natural’ to be one of the causes for this life threatening disease.
    Thankyou.

Thank you for the video and Twitter posts.
I went to an actual allopathic doctor with my dad, who was hooked on ayurvedic stuff and refused to get medical help for bleeding sores on legs.
I complained to the dr and asked him to put some sense into my diabetic dad, and convince him to go for clinical research and evidence based medicine rather than pseudo medicine.
The allopathic dr, quotes we cannot completely discredit ayurveda, for some stuff like jaundice we don't have any cures. 🤦‍♂️ (Not making this up! 💯 real)
I was in such a state of disbelief, my dad does the methi decoction too. This was told by a relatively young diabetes specialist in a posh area in a metro.

Thank you for your great work, Dr Philips. After you published on Orthoherb, I made someone stop taking it (their rheumatologist in a major metro had prescribed it!). I do not (and have not) take any herbal supplements. I do have a question - what about "herbal" teas that Organic India or Vahdam sell? I saw your video on green tea (extract). Have you ever tested tea "infusions"? At least Vahdam sells dried leaf - e.g., peppermint leaves come in a tea bag. Organic India's tulsi tea is also dried leaf.
I drink infusions to avoid caffeine intake. It also helps keep my water intake up. Frankly, something like peppermint's also refreshing (placebo or not). But after seeing your videos, I worry a lot.

It is so unfortunate that in the era we now live in where we can demonstrate clearly that these practices of ingesting unrefined herbs are toxic, we still have a large section who champion such nonsense. The outside green part of aloe Vera, I have been told. Is high in latex. Many of us have latex allergies, so I don’t touch anything with aloe vera

Thanks Doc for making these wonderfully informative videos. Had a question. Are we harming ourselves by using turmeric, methi and kokum while cooking or is it only the extracts that we need to stay away from since they contain a more concentrated dosage of the harmful compounds

Dr, appreciate your effort to conscientise and educate common person like me on do's and don'ts for a healthy life. I have a question on the consumption of Indian Mint (Pani kurkka) boiled water for cold, running nose, fever etc. Does it actually help? There's a popular belief that it helps immensely

Some herbal teas are liver toxic. Chhaparal, Roobios etc fall into toxic category.

Sir I have a question, I have had fatty liver due to alcohol. After 4 years of heavy consumption of alcohol daily, my symptom was total loss of appetite and didn't feel like drinking even water (all this didn't happen 2 years back when I used to drink) . Three months now on daily use of Heptral 400mg+ Evion 400mg . Now all my liver functions are normal and ultrasound too. Should I continue to consume these medicines?
I mean should I be taking these meds for more period to restore liver function further?

Evion is also not required if you dont have chronic liver disease. Heptral is expensive nothing.
