Original 'Rubber Duck' 1970 Mack RS700 of caretaker/small fleet owner Anthony Fox

  • Anthony Fox has been caretaker of this piece of history -- one of the original 1970 Mack trucks driven by the Rubber Duck character in Sam Peckinpah's 1970s "Convoy" film -- for the last few years. And it's not just the truck. The 5,800-gallon shell of a Trailmobile tanker, used for asphalt at some point in its life, is also an original from the movie, bearing the scars of some of the high-action shoot. Overdrive talked with the Rome, Ga., 20-truck small fleet owner (also pulling tanks) at the Lincolnton, N.C., Southern Classic Truck Show in September 2017.

My uncle and his rig were extras in the convoy scene of the movie. I have a picture of my uncle and CW McCall. The movie had a call out for truckers so my uncle jumped at the opportunity. I’m 53 and I have my dvd copy of this movie. A true trucker classic.

Agreed. Saw it as a kid back in 1978. Never thought about the original truck still being around. Assume a replica and a good stuntman were used at the end of the movie as special effects did not exist at today's levels, and obviously neither did CGI and green screen.

That is true of most Mack trucks historically. In addition to tractor-trailers, Mack makes smaller class 7/8 trucks (they compete with International, Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge in the just-below-tractor-trailer classes) - we have a rather large number in the DC suburbs - doing duty in the trades - such as cement mixer front ends, or toting gravel (aggregate) or even (don't laugh!) dirt. In my immediate area (southern suburbs if Washington DC) it's Chaney Enterprises that has a lot of these *smaller* Macks.

We ran DM800’s hauling coal in SE Ky, I went places that scared shit outta me in those ol Mack’s, off road not many other makes would hold up, Autocars, Paystars, White Construktor’s, that’s about it. 👍🇺🇸

Alexander Performance, You forgot White Line Fever and the Snowman's Kenworth in Newnan, GA is probably a replica and If it's the one I think it is, It's probably Brad Wike's replica out of Lincolnton, NC that ended up being brought to Newnan, GA for some show, Which is a replica of Snowman's truck, If not, The truck you mention is probably more than likely another replica of Snowman's truck, The truth is, None of the real trucks used during the filming of the first Smokey and the Bandit movie have yet to surface to this day, Todd Epperson, As for the Blue Mule from White Line Fever, I'm working on it...

There is still one of those Macks out there on the road last I read. It was turned into a dump truck and several people have tried to buy it with no luck. Bruhn brothers trucking also bought Pigpen's Mack Cruiseliner after the movie and put it to work. It was laid over on its side by one of their drivers hauling a heavy load and wrecked beyond repair.
