  • Did You Know Potatoes Produce Poisonous Berries? | What Is Potato Fruit? | Guten Yardening
    Sometimes the potato plants you grow produce little green berries on top. As you might expect, since potatoes are part of the nightshade family, these potato berries are part of the plant that you cant eat. The berries are filled with a glycoalkaloid called solanine. (The same solanine that makes potatoes exposed to the sun turn green).
    Though the berry looks like an unripe tomato, the solanine levels inside make it inedible and the berry can actually poison someone who tries to eat it. However, inside those little berries are something very exciting.
    While we usually grow potatoes from seed potatoes to ensure that the next generation of potatoes is true to the parent plant, it is also possible to grow potatoes from the true potato seeds inside of these potato berries.
    In this video, we talk about everything you should know about potato berries, and some of the reasons why we don't grow potatoes from true potato seeds.
    We hope you enjoy this video and learn something new from it.
    Thanks for watching.

      It really does look like a green tomato, but I sure wouldn't taste that great. :D :D Apparently, for those who have actually tasted them (without eating them), they say they are quite bitter. I will not be tasting them. But, we will be experimenting with them.

      Awesome!! It will be a great experiment. Just leave them on there as long as you can. How is your garden shaping up this season?

    A very good explanation about the potato berries. Every week I make a short video about potato breeding.

  • @mancavegamingandgardening9901

    I'm not sure why but this year my plants are crazy with the berries! I never tried saving the seeds, I always heard that heirloom potatoes were a one in a million sort of thing; farmer goes his life growing new potatoes from seed and might get 2 or 3 that stand the test of time. Excited to see where the experiment goes!

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 2 lety +3

      Yes, it's been crazy this year with the berries. I think you are right about the fact that we will see a lot of variance in what comes out of our experimentation, but you never know. I just can't wait to see what happens this winter. :)

    To me, the potato berries look just like green tomatoes. And the 2 plants are so closely related, I recall seeing "to-pato" plants for sale a very long time ago. They're also called pomatoes, and are tomato plants grafted onto potatoes, so they grow tomatoes above ground and potatoes below ground. By the way, the ENTIRE potato plant is poisonous, except for the tuber, and rotten potatoes give off poisonous gas that has killed entire families when the potatoes were stored in enclosed spaces like basements.

    So, so lucky!
    So, finally a quiet time to finish this comment! I have gotten berries before and viable seed! Very fun! I gave plants away to get more results. They are SO MUCH FUN!!! You only get a few but what a ride, no idea what your going to get. If you get berries give it a try. The only thing I could never find an answer to is whether you should hill the plants up like a normal potato plant and whether this would increase yield or not.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 2 lety

      We are really excited for this one! Like you said, I don't have a clue how many of these seeds will germinate, etc, but it will be fun, and I think we will likely try a few methods for hilling, etc. depending on the results we get post-germination. We are looking forward to the experiment a lot! :)

      Did your potatoes flower? If they did, you should look out for berries. If you are low on pollinators, consider hand pollination.

    Wow, I've never seen potato seeds before! I harvested a handful of small potatoes today from one of my buckets, enough for a small meal. : ) I had ordered some of those purple potatoes (seed potatoes) from Menards online. Then a week later my $ was refunded because they were out of stock.

      We have so many potato seeds this year. We have never had this kind of quantity. :) As to the purple potatoes, we'll see if we can't send a few your way. :) A small meal of potatoes is still a great experience. :)

    Sometimes they fall off when they are ripe
    Seed berries can mold quickly so taking the seeds out as they ripen before they rott is best
    Im not certain if we got any to grow or not
    I forget where i plant them and i loose them in the house
    But i keep trying lol

      I think planting them in a labeled pot would have been a good idea instead of in the garden lol
