- If your potatoes produce berries, save them and grow potatoes from them next season. Seeds from potato berries are known as True Potato Seeds (TPS). I'll show how to save seeds, sow seeds, repot, transplant and harvest.

What a great video! Thank you for taking us on the whole journey from potato seed to harvest! I planted 3 organic grocery store potato varieties close together to get some unique varieties in the future. What a fun experiment 😁
That is awesome! I hope you get something fun out of it.
Thankyou very much for taking the time to create such an informative video on this sunject matter 😊
My pleasure! :)
Very informative video..
From the seed saving.. to germination and to harvest.
All other videos I have watched only show the seed harvest.. not anything else.
I've been growing tators since 2013 from spud starts and always pinched the flowers to gain more volume.
Thinking about letting a few go to seed after watching this video.
THANK YOU
Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful. I couldn't find much videos on growing TPS when I started them so thought it would be a good idea to document the whole process.
Enjoyed the video! Good info. This is first time growing in grow bag and I had 3 potato berries 😊
That's great! A lot of times I don't get any berries but got quite a few last year. Probably because I planted a lot more than I usually do.
Thank you for showing all the steps from getting the seeds to harvesting the potatoes. I would like to try that sometime. I have planted some potatoes and will be watching for berries.
You're welcome! Good luck. Berries can be challenging to get.
Growing true potato seeds... definitely love that you are sharing this. So many different varieties of potato and so much work that can be done. For me, hybridizing is an art and a science. Developing new varieties that work for your specific environment is awesome work. Glad to see you doing this and thanks for sharing.
This is interesting. I've wondered about sowing potato seeds. Good to see the process.
I had no idea about them a few years ago. Now I look forward to trying some every year.
Thank you so much this is a great help
Glad it helped!
Trying from the tiny tiny seeds
I’m only at the sprouts 🌱 part though
Long road ahead
So excited !! Clancy seeds
That's great! They grow surprisingly fast once they are in the ground.
@@gapey I still have them in the little pots maybe I should up pot before I throw them out in there new home
Great vid thanks. no music while u talked, sped up some stages, well described every inch of the way without the waffle - perfect youtubing - brilliant.
This year was my first attempt at growing from shop bought seed spuds (24Kg from 24 seed spuds) I didn't realise that potatoes popped out little seed berries so Ive kept a few and here I am getting an education. I never subscribe but Im ticking your box :) Cheers fron NZ.
Hope you give growing the berry seeds a try. It's fun to see what you end up with.
Awesome video! I watched it 3 times. I have some early potato tps growing and hoping to get some little spuds to plant in the fall. I grew a late potato tps last year and the heat got it. A blue potato volunteer that came up last year had about 10 berries but I didn't save them. Thanks for making this video!
I'm glad you found it helpful! I'm really surprised how big of potatoes I got in the first year of growing from seed. I was expecting them to be really small and not get good size until the next year but I really got some monster sized ones last season.
Thanks for the long form.
No problem. I hope it was helpful!
66 and it's the 1st time I'm gonna try from seed next year thanks
Nice! I grew a bunch this year. I'm looking forward to harvesting to see what I got.
Yes ma'am I was surprised at how big your potatoes were too. You have some real winners!
if you haven't checked out the TPS harvest from this past season, I posted a video on that and got some even bigger ones!
What a great video.
Thanks. I just repotted this season's seedlings last night. :)
Great video!!!
Thank you!
Eureka, bravo and thank you.
You're welcome!
Nice video. Very informative. Thank you so much for the wealth of information.
Very nice
Thanks
Great video! I got two potato berries last summer. Planted the seeds Dec 30th and have 16 seedlings now. Very excited about what I may get.
Awesome! I hope they grow well for you.
Yes yes, I had tomato berries this year !
Nice! I typically get a single berry every year, if any. Only got one last year and one this year.
We’ll done!
Thanks! Will be growing a lot more of them this year.
Im trying this for the first time! Hoping im not too late for the season but going to try a few any way
Oh good luck! Hope you get at least a little harvest from them this season. Otherwise you can just leave them in the ground and they'll probably sprout up and grow next season :D
@@gapey oh that's great to know! Thanks so much for the tip!
Such a great video! How do they taste? Can’t wait to grow TPS next spring. I didn’t keep track of which plants produced TPS, but it will be a nice surprise.☺️
I haven't tried them yet. I only got one berry on the plants this year and plan on growing them next year and saving a couple potatoes from this year's harvest to grow out. Should grow better the 2nd year.
I haven't tried to grow potato SEEDs. But I think I may need to try this. I did dig up and move some volunteer plants. Still to be seen if it works out for me.
growing from the potato seeds is fun cuz you never know what you will end up with. I'm growing a bunch this year from seeds I got from a facebook group. I should have a nice mix of different varieties. Will be planting them soon.
great video, how do you store the small potatoes to ensure the TPS potatoes will be good the next year?
I store mine in a paper bag in my mini fridge.
Hey every potato is a hybrid so every seed will be a hybrid. Even if you only plant one potato type. 🌱
Yep that's true and seems pretty crazy.
@@gapey Thats realy crazy. For example there is a potato from peru First time documented in 1763. Imagine the genetics potential from a "F1" plant this age. Some genetics could be extinct today and hopefully my plant from this variety will produce a berry this year. 😍🌱
Thank you for this very informative video! I am currently growing Clancey potatoes from seed from Botanical Interests for the first time. My seedlings are about a month old and still in their pots. Your explanation helped me see what to expect. If I were to save a potato from this harvest as you mentioned to plant next year, how do I save and store it?
It's best to store it in some place cool. I put mine in a mini fridge but you could store them in a garage or shed or some place cool so they don't sprout.
Me too !! I’m only at the tiny sprouts 🌱 part 8/10 germination though 😮❤
@@Pinkpumpkingardener 8 out of 10 is pretty good! I think my seeds were old so germination was pretty poor. I started a lot of seeds and ended up with plenty of sprouts.
I was going to ask you if each seed was different or if they are the same. But after watching the whole video, you answered my question at the end. I have six different varieties of potatoes growing right now. And I found one potato berry. Just one- but lucky enough as that’s all I need.
I will be trying to grow them like you did. Very informative video. Thank you! Did you ever try growing these new varieties agin or have you had them to eat? Wonder how they tasted.
I ended up not saving any to grow out. Storage life was not good on them so decided to not grow them out. I got a whole bunch of new TPS growing this year that should be a good variety and can’t wait to harvest them.
🥔👍
I just learned about TPS today. I had no clue potatoes produced seeds. Is it only specific potatoes that produce berries? I assume my russets and yukon gold arent going to make berries?
I believe all potatoes can produce berries but it requires them to be pollinated and weather conditions must be just right to produce them. Most of my potatoes never get berries but occasionally will get one that produces them.
I planted russet potatoes next to the yukon golds. My russets are producing berries. This is great
@@playably that would be an interesting cross. :)
How do you store them till next year, please?
I put them in a paper bag and put in my mini fridge. Or if you have a cool place to store them that would work too. Should be kept at probably 55 degrees F or lower to keep from sprouting. If you see them sprouting then move them to the fridge.
I plan on trying some TPS, but it seems like they don't produce very much, compared to using seed potatoes. Is it honestly worth the extra work involved, compared to using tubers?
Growing TPS is like roulette, you don't know if you'll end up with something good or bad. The first year of growing them you typically won't see as big or as much productivity as growing from potatoes and since they are a hybrid they might not even be that good. But if you do end up with something good you can save the potatoes and grow those again next season which should be more productive and larger in size than the ones you grew from seed.
@@gapey how long does it take from planting the seeds, to transplant outside, and then harvest? We are still quite a while away from our "last frost", but I want to get a good jump on getting the seedlings ready to go out when it does warm up.
@@freakygardener8033 watch vid again Im pretty sure she talked amount of days/weeks as she went along, just note each stage and add total :)
@@freakygardener8033 I was wondering the same thing
Very nice lady
Thank you
I had 2 different TPS pods that are growing now. One looks like yours and the other looks like tomato plants. Could they have cross-pollinated with my tomato plants last season? Will grow both just to see what comes of it.
hmm weird. No, I don't think it's possible for a tomato and potato to cross pollinate.
Abour how much potatoes will you expect to have?
It's hard to say. It really varies by each plant. some are a lot more productive than others.
Please don't take this the wrong way. You did all that great prep on starting them from seed. But when you planted in the ground looks to be rather slacked on preparation. You fertilize it which was great. But you should of loosen the surrounding soil. (Looks like you might be doing no dig? You could of took a pitch fork at stick it in the ground wiggle a little bit) should of kept them weed free. Or close. Looks like they barely grew much since planting in the garden. Sorry this is just what I was thinking. You don't have to listen to anything I say.
Thanks for the tips. It's a challenge keeping that bed weed free. The bind weed in there is terrible and impossible to get rid of. The ground isn't too hard so don't think that is an issue. I thought I had a pretty decent harvest for a TPS. I got more potatoes than I had expected.
@@gapey as long as you're happy with the out come that's all that matters. For me I was disappointed, but that's probably because I haven't had much luck on mine. Just disappointed in general. Gotta keep trying though.
Yeah weeds are terrible. (My advice at least what I've been doing). Get some tubs my local are had 10gal containers for like 10$. Maybe you can get lucky to. I hope to find some more.
@@IAmHumanJake Most of my garden is raised beds but I grow the potatoes in ground. Haven't had a lot of luck growing potatoes in containers. Maybe I don't water them enough, not sure. I grew a bunch more TPS in ground this year. I look forward to harvesting soon and seeing what I get.
Please share that with us, I look forward to seeing what you get. I wish I lived in a potato friendly environment. We usually plant spuds down here around Valentine's Day to beat the heat. I have potato volunteers that come up every year.
