How MUCH Can You GROW with a Handful of TINY Potatoes?

- In this video, I show you how much you can grow from just a literal handful of tiny potatoes! Supposedly, seed potatoes should be a decent size (at least bigger than a hen's egg) to grow a healthy potato plant and get a good harvest, so in this experiment, I used really small potatoes found in our garden to see what would happen.

G'day Everyone, just a tip on how I cooked these up since they were sized from about duck egg to smaller than a quail egg. After giving the spuds another clean, I boiled the largest potatoes for 10 minutes, and then I added the medium-sized ones to the pot and boiled them for a further 10 minutes before removing them all from the heat and draining. I didn't boil the tiny ones at all. Then, as you saw in the video, I threw them all together added olive oil, salt, and oregano, and placed them in the oven at 210C (410F) for about 30 mins until golden brown and a bit crispy (you may need to remove at halfway or so to turn and baste for better results). I know roasting potatoes is second nature for most, but I thought I would write this quick "recipe" for those who were wondering. Cheers :)

It's curious to me that the CZcamsrs I prefer to follow all have their random 'pets' (a.k.a. I always use my small sprouted potatoes for seed. They usually outperform the seed potatoes I buy at the garden center. Love the self propagating potato!

I grew a bunch of potatoes from seedtubers and just harvested them a couple of months ago. Half of the original seed potatoes where still healthy so I pulled the dying plant out of them and replanted them. I now have 6 more potato plants healthily growing. I couldn't believe I'm getting two lots of potatoes out of the exact same seed tubers

Absolutely love the little dog with the delighted interest in what you were doing. Lovely to see that the little potatoes actually grow into decent sized edible ones. I always leave potatoes in the soil after harvest, they come up when they are ready. So now I now I know the littlest ones are still worth it.
We love eating those teeny “potato pearls” and once we plant potatoes in a bed we always get a volunteer plant growing which I leave if space allows. Nothing better that fresh cooked potatoes

I've always replant the smaller Potatoes and have been doing it over 30yrs. My longest run of replanting the same potatoes & harvesting is 9 years
All my life I was told that ''potatoes are bad for ya'' or ''They will make you fat''. So i've not eaten any potatoes for years. But recently I decided to eat a baked potato, and then the next morning I woke up I felt incredible. I had not felt like that in years, I felt so strong and good.
I didn't make a big out deal of it, it was just a good day for me right? We all have good days. So a few days went by, and everthing kinda come back to normal. I then decided to eat another bake potato, the one the other day was just soooo good. The next morning I wake up, DANNNGG, whats going on, I feel like a super hero. Lots of energy and I just feel really good, ready to work.
Anyway ... it took me like 6-7 times to realize that every single time I eat potatoes, the next morning I wake up feeling incredibly good and healthy. Potatoes are in fact essential to our diet I believe. Its not the potatoes that are unhealthy lol, its how people cook them.

I don't think potatoes themselves are so fattening it's all the things we tend to dress them with, butter, sour cream etc.
Potatoes are actually very healthy! They are one of the few foods that you can actually survive on if you ate only them and nothing else (provided you didn't peel them, as the skin contains essential nutrients). They are also very filling, and very versatile in the kitchen.

Great tucker Mark, I had a huge crop of surprise potatoes grow from a discarded potato in my big compost pile! They were a very big baker variety I’m sure came from my local grocery store originally. The way taters grow so easily once an assortment of seed potatoes gets established I don’t think I’ll ever need to buy taters from the store again and home grown are much tastier 😂
So, you're not only adding food scraps to your compost pile but removing food (potatoes) from it! 👍😁
Even the smallest thing can make a deference. Those look to me like we have here in Canada called Yukon gold. Very tasty. Love the ending on how you cooked them. Cheers
I've made this my standard practice for planting potatoes. As long as the soil is good, it doesn't seem to make much difference on the size of the sowed tater. I've also noticed that my plants tend to keep growing well past 3 months. I had most of them go from mid-May all through September green and flowering. The crop of yellow potatoes was ridiculous this year. I was finding them almost 2 feet deep. There were some real monsters in there. A lot of them were the size of large sweet potatoes.
Do you know what type of “yellow” potatoes you planted? My russets did poorly this year but my sweet potatoes did really good.

When I originally bought them for seeding, the box said they were "yellow fingerling potatoes", not much other info than that. A local nursery had them, but that was a few years ago.

We have done this! It was worth the effort. A spare corner of garden, virtually left alone. Come early Summer, a beautiful crop. Worth a bash if you have the space... or a spare bucket or two. Thanks for the informative video. Fantastic as always 🥰
We used to use the old plastic rubbish bins with some holes drilled in the sides about 6 inches from the bottom for drainage. Then just tip the bin onto a tarp to harvest and lift the tarp to put the soil back in, top up with some fresh stuff and start over!

I'll be the 800 commentator! I remember my grandpa in the early 70s taking me with him. He grab his pitchfork out of work shed and we ride his truck down to the field where he planted potatoes near the cal pasture. it was a bit chilly, damp and cloudy. It was definitely cool for Tennessee weather. They retired from the north. Before long we pitchforked up a big bushel of potatoes to take back to grandma. A week later we got the rest of them up. We took them back and covered them in lye and put them in the seller.
Harvesting potatoes and sweet potatoes is always such an exciting experience!!! I pulled almost 80 lbs of sweet potatoes from 3 of my raised beds last month, one of them was 6 pounds!!!
I grew potatoes this year for the first time. I bought purple ones and they were small too. I had them in grow bags but i didnt fertilize, so i got all small again. I kept one small for next year tho.

I don't know why it is so satisfying watching potatoes be dug up. Almost like opening a present. You could make and hour long video of just digging them up and I would watch.
I had a neighbor help me clean out my potato bed last year. She just left a good handful or more in the bed. This year, i planted tomatoes in that bed. I had potatoes all over that bed right next to my tomatoes. The potatoes that were in that bed were my biggest of this year. About 3 times the size of your biggest potato you just pulled up. I was amazed.

That’s great! I’ve got a whole bag of tiny potatoes waiting to be replanted. Now if they’ll keep another 4 months I’ll get them in March.
We live in the same kind of climate but if the soil isn’t frozen much should be able to plant some now. I’ve had volunteers come up in the past when there was very cold snowy winters and come after the warmer weather the lost potatoes sprouted. But sometimes voles and mice may find them and eat them too unless you have raised beds with hardware cloth under the raised beds.
It is a ridiculous amount of fun to dig up potatoes! I planted 10 lbs of seed potatoes this year, and harvested 125 lbs! It's a treasure hunt for adults.

I found your videos roughly two years ago Mark it was a time where when the ole girl walked out the front door and never returned and left me to raise 4 young beautiful kids, when the night rolled in the kids would fall to sleep a quietness would come over the house and I'd find the mind wandering asking myself where it all went wrong but that changed when I found your channel mark!! Your videos truly helped me thru a tough time mate I know a bloody gardening channel of all things lol keep the videos coming absolutely love them mate
An idea for washing off small veggies: Save the lid from one of those buckets you were collecting in....Get out your electric drill and a nice small bit, like 1/8 inch....drill several dozen holes to make a colander when you wash your veggies!

I just moved into a house I've been building in the Missouri Ozarks. Our soil is rocky, and I'm no spring chicken, LOL, so I planned on raised beds. That sale was a great start for my homestead.

We had to add hardware cloth and landscape fabric underneath it because we had a vole population explosion and they ate 95% of my seed potato planting. We used two chipmunk traps and caught 27 of them. Had a great sweet potato harvest in the birdie raised bed. Have fun

I save all of my tiny potatoes for planting in the Spring. Even if they're wrinkled beyond recognition, they still make potatoes. I planted about 5 pounds of chitted old tiny potatoes this past Spring for us and it made over 200 pounds of potatoes and will keep us in potatoes the whole Winter.
Never underestimate litter potatoes.

I'm in Ireland, i tried potatoes for the first time last year and we had extreme rain, they all developed blight :( hopeful that this year will be more successful!
Did you grow in containers? If not, I'm wondering if they might do better that way. Sorry your efforts were disappointing last time.
Hannah I’m in Ireland too. If you grow first or second early potatoes they’re usually lifted before blight season. If you really want to grow late potatoes there are some blight resistant varieties. Better luck for next year and maybe the weather will be kinder to us.
At the current price of groceries this is an amazing example of the value of gardening for free. Don't waste anything, give everything a try. Good eating and fun to do too!!!!

Your excitement of 'ooo ooo ... hello ! ' was delightful!
I do this every year. I call them "bullets" since they are smaller than "drops." By planting drops and bullets you don't have the disease worry of seed potato slices. Also, you can just throw them around the garden and get volunteers. I had 37 kilos of volunteers this year. Proper crop rotation also encourages volunteers.

Hi Mark, I've been watching your videos for a long time, and I really like this video. I just put a video on my channel showing how you can break the chits off of sprouted potatoes, and plant them ONLY without any potato attached at all. I was wondering if you've ever tried that! One I started in November had potatoes, about the size you were harvesting, growing in a 12 oz solo cup in my living room window! So far I've broken off 8 chits off of a shriveled-up potato from last year, about half the size of a golf ball, planted them all, and more chits are coming for me to break off and plant! So I love the idea of planting those tiny potatoes, but I can possibly grow 25 or more plants from one of those same-sized small potatoes! If you haven't tried it yet, it would make a great video. I love the spin you put on all your videos to make them riveting!
I personally like the really little potatoes to add into stews, soups and chillies. They are also good in savory porages!!

Last season (we're in winter now), I used 9 golf ball size organic potatoes I got from the supermarket, chitted the out (we have a shorter grow season in New England), planted them in storage containers and old reusable shopping bags with broken handles and ended up with 14 pounds of potatoes.
I'm sure you wake up some days and think the same thing. Just to think you started gardening and raising chickens for your family to save money, and now this channel is over two million subscribers is such an amazing success story.

A friend's dad growing up would put down a layer of straw.Then layer his potatoes in then put his next layer of straw time to harvest he pulled back the layer of straw and picked up his potatoes.
I've planted the tiny ones myself. I dug them up because I thought they weren't doing anything and a few had a big potato attached to it. It's winter here in the States so I have them buried in a bucket and I because nothing is growing at the top, I'm going to plant on top of it. But that makes me happy. Thanks for showing us what happens.

I harvested some teeny tiny pearl potatoes this year. I'm going to try keeping them over winter to replant in the spring.
😊 we do this every year when we harvest the potatoes! I have my kids put the tiny ones back in the soil or bring them inside to go back in the ground come fall. Haven't had to buy seed potatoes other than the first year. 💙 Plus I feel it strengthens the potatoes to my exact little climate because I get more from them each year.

I saved some tiny potatoes from my late fathers harvest last year. They've been sitting on my window sill photosynthesizing. I was wondering if they would grow much but this has given me hope
Im in Canada, zone 5b and ive had volunteer potatoes going on 4 years now!! Sometimes i just get too busy to harvest them. This year i had a whole bed of russet!! Not sure why ive had quite as many as i do but its taught me quite a bit. Keep experimenting 😊 Great video!! Thank you
For some unknown reason, I have a bunch of 2 gallon grow bags so I put one small, store bought potato in each of 8 of those bags. 4 made plants. Those plants are thriving, so not time to harvest yet..even though last night was a substantial frost. I have those 4 grow bags in an 18 gallon tote, layer of leaves and grass clippings under them, in a small greenhouse.

My garden is full of potato peels and small potatoes also, every year I collect several kilos with some surprise. Even now in winter somehow they managed to grow.
Last year I inherited a self seeded potato plant at my new community garden plot. When I dug it up I managed to put the fork through every potato but one. This year it was hands only. Great test of tiny potatoes and yes they look like King Edwards.
My grandma used to tell me stories that when times were more scarce, when they would peel the potatoes, they would plant the peels themselves to get more potatoes instead of the potatoes themselves. that way they could eat more and still get potatoes in a few months
We tried the same experiment with almost identical size & amount of potatoes initially & a similar harvest!! We had enough potatoes as accompaniment for 2 meals! It's a win for sure! We've got the next batch of teeny tiny potatoes growing well now! YAY! Blessings from South Australia
This past season I planted a chunk of a potato I cut off while preparing dinner, put it in a small pot.
I accidentally broke the plant in half when it was about 15-20 cm tall and had to put it in water to root again. Replanted it in the same small pot, about a litre or less.
In the summer I still got a handful of small potatoes, about the amount you started with. Exceeded expectations.
Thank you mate. I've been trying to convince my parents that tiny pea-sized potatoes do not give lower yields, or at least not in a manner that would justify eating them. They have a lot more value next year as you showed. I'll show them that video ;)

I love the size of the smaller potatoes. Great for roasting in a small pan with some Olive oil, Salt, Pepper and finely diced fresh Herbs.
....or drop them whole into a Stew until tender.

Those look like Yukon Gold to me. Could be wrong. But another option for those tiny potatoes is 'smashed potatoes'. Boil them whole, then put them on a greased baking sheet, 'smash' them flat-ish with the bottom of a glass, then drizzle with melted butter, garlic, salt & whatever other spices you like. Bake until the tops are crispy-brown. Yummy!
