- This award winning documentary tells the story of Miss Edna Lewis, the granddaughter of freed slaves from Virginia. It chronicles her life on the farm in Freetown, VA, and her exodus to New York City where she became the adored chef for post-WW II artists, writers, scholars, and performers in Manhattan at Cafe Nicholson.

Marvelous heart warming documentary, thank you for sharing, wished it was longer ❤
So glad to see this. My family knew her family around the Lahore/Unionville area in Orange County. My mother treasured her cookbook, and it's been a way for me to recreate the way my grandmother cooked.
This is a wonderful movie. Thank you so very much for making it. I recently made a documentary about the only man in Scotland who knew Tennessee Williams and had a stack of letters from Tenn that no one had seen. His name was Konrad Hopkins, and he and Tenn often went downstairs from Tenn's apartment to dine in Johnny Nicholson's! I spoke to Johnny Nicholson briefly a few years back. Lovely to see Miss Lewis and Scott - A terrific movie! Thanks!
This is beautiful and made my eyes water. The cookbook they both wrote is one of my favorite treasures!
How wonderful life would be if everyone had an Edna Lewis in their life! I just loved this!
This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing it.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So honored to be filmed cooking alongside of Ms. Lewis in this documentary. It was filmed at Seaside in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. It was during a Seaside Feast with Southern food Authors John Egerton, Edna Lewis, Eugene Walters and Marie Rudisill 1992. 11:45 minute mark
Soo cool! Thanks for sharing that!
This was great thank you Mr Peacock well done indeed
Very beautiful documentary. i just finished reading the cookbook they did together, and about their unique relationship. They were both blessed to have spent the time with each other.
What a fabulous job Bailey! I'm so proud to know you. You did a fantastic job getting a personal story and message out to the world. I'm proud to be a Southern Cook too.
What a beautiful story God bless you
This woman is amazing. Ms. Edna Lewis deserves to have an entire doc made of her life. I loved this short but really wanted to know more of what happened and her ending. Was she happy? Did she pass on in the manner she wanted to? And so on. And I want to see an interview with Scott now.
Here's a link to a trailer of a video on the life of Edna Lewis czcams.com/video/Y4CRPiJuKrQ/video.html
I love her books, the magnum opus with her protégé Scott Peacock.
The gift of southern cooking (scott peacock and edna lewis) is my hands down favorite cookbook.
Thank you for this.
Touching story! Wow!! ❤️
I loved the photo of all the people sitting around, obviously replete after one of Miss Edna's meals - with Tennessee Williams looking especially satisfied...If it's possible to get ahold of a copy of that photograph I'd be most grateful ! (My movie is called U & ME & TENNESSEE - an American romance...) Thanks again for an excellent portrait !
I had the pleasure of dinning with Ms. Edna in 1997 at the ACF South East Regional Conference, she was indeed inspiring!
Very enlightening film, I'm glad I watched and subscribed so I could share it!
See you on facebook.
Thanks,
She was such a beautiful soul
Great To know about Ms. Edna!!!
The photograph of Tennessee Williams and friends lunching outdoors at Cafe Nicholson was taken by Karl Bissinger who is represented by Catherine Johnson Art.
There is an interview with him about 2 years after she died. He talked about falling into that depression that he mentioned here and what shook him out of it was her. He said if he didn't take care of her, what would happen to her? He worried about her and that shook him out and made him take charge.
Tasteful and nourishing. Thanks.
OMG THIS LOOKS SOOOOOOOO DELICIOUS THANKS FOR THIS RECIPE 😋😋😋
I Enjoyed this, May she rest in peace.
This was so rewarding to watch. Does anyone have Edna's first, out of print book - and if so - is it worth getting if you have her other books?
:) Wonderful
