  • In todays video I cover a game I played that stood out to me as far as indie horror games go. GOLDEN LIGHT follows the misadventure of a man traversing his personal hell with one goal in mind, saving his damsel.
    If you liked this game, please support it along with the the team that helped bring this masterpiece into the real world. Most music used within this video is directly from the GOLDEN LIGHT soundtrack.

    As someone who recieved a TBI from a car accident, any injury to the brain can mess with memory. So even though a lobotomy is focused on a specific part, and the memories are stored somewhere else, that doesn't mean you won't have memory issues later. The brain is so very complex, so basically damaging one part impacts the rest.

    Honestly it seems like the protagonist got a lobotomy in the scene with the surgeon to forget about "she", but since this is a lobotomy it basically broke his perception of reality, and this is him going through his mementos piecing his past together, then i think he gave up at the end (?) And got consumed by the golden light. Assuming its something to do with "touching oneself" Story (which i think means that he tried satisfying in a way).
    I think the golden light and "touching himself" Refers to the lobotomy. Cause he did end up squeezing every ounce of potential he had trying to forget "she" Which led to his "creativity" Coming up in this twisted maze of memories which he is trying to piece together until the moment it all clicks (aka the golden light/lobotomy he did at the end).
    To conclude i think its the protagonist just going through his broken memories of a failed lobotomy in his twisted broken mind due to said lobotomy. But this is just a theory though from the analysis.

    • @nasxeen

      That actually makes a lot of sense, good theory!

    • @GreenCheese-rc8ud
      @GreenCheese-rc8ud Před 3 měsíci +35

      This is more into head cannon territory, I think that areas like the meat factory and the weird forest with the man eater might be his book ideas being mixed in with his memories. Cause they don't have the same meat like aesthetic (I think this has smth to do with him finding out that "she" Is with another man because flesh and lust I guess are thematically connected but I may be reading too much into it). So that may explain why the game is the way it is. But this is more of a headcannon than a full theory.

    • @nasxeen
      @nasxeen  Před 3 měsíci +20

      Yeah I didn’t really have a solid enough theory as to what any of the bosses/areas were supposed to mean. My working idea was that they were tied to places he’s remembers having pleasant memories with she and he was looking there for an answer on what made the past better than how things were currently (following with my idea that the game is the characters drugged out experience). Ex. in the flashback scene in the rain seems like they went on a date in the town resembling the backstreet or the meatwoods some type of winter log cabin get away.
      It was kind of stretch with no evidence that also didn’t explain areas like the corridors or meat factory, so I didn’t share it in the video. Though I do think the idea of those areas being from his novel is interesting because it would imply that his fictional novels are blending into his reality.

    • @GreenCheese-rc8ud
      @GreenCheese-rc8ud Před 3 měsíci +11

      @@nasxeen I feel like it's both his memories and his work mixing together, because his head is a jumbled mess. I mean assuming it was a lobotomy, a failed one, the brain damage could be leading him into this mixed reality in which his thoughts about she, his memories, his books are getting mixed into a cocktail of a reality.
      His career, or at least the failings of it do seem to have a major impact on his fake reality, cause they show up as typewriters and mix tapes, so is it really a stretch to say they will manifest in some other ways.
      I personally lean towards the fact it's just everything all at once being thrown into his delusions and that's why everything is the way it is. So both the books and memories are creating these landscapes.

    New viewer, love the vid and as someone who plans to do long form video essays i enjoyed everything about it including the small snipit of multiplayer. My overall theory of the story is that it tells the story of someone trying to rememeber who "she" is after letting his work consume him and ultimately ruining his relationship, with "they" being a representation of the new relationship "she" has found.
    Along with walking in on them doing doing the deed, and of course due to the pain of losing her he forces himself to forget only for his mind to try and force him to remember. Which in this case is most likely nightmares or him being in a comma with the red text being his inner thoughts and the "Golden light" hinting at him waking up.
    Although it is a small theory nonetheless, and if you do enjoy games like this i recommend a few I'm found of which are
    -Spooky's house of jumpscares(adventure horror)
    -Fear & hunger(dungeon horror)
    -Darkwood(mystery horror)
    and a very niche game called "Fear"(psychological horror)

    I have to preface this by saying I couldn't play this game when I fearst heard about it- the visuals literally give me a headache. (There was some debate on epilepsy in the past, so I don't fafo)
    This video reminded me that it existed though, (and I'm on meds now) and it turns out that low brightness on half of acphone screen and looking away some helps tremendously, so I can passively consume it at least.
    I really prefer to play games like this for myself, but I'm not going to in this case. (I'll still try to pick it up when I get the chance to support the dev)
    I feel like the big themes of this game are Love, and Objectification/ Consumption.
    I find the blatant objectification of everyone as so fascinating...
    Specifically in how it changes the meaning of "objectification" itself with the "Gut" framing, and that everything, even the weapons, are weirdly living and edible, or at least positioned almost exclusively inside a digestive system.
    I feel like it represents this strange sense of how innate and passive objectification and possession is, especially when you're stressed and tired.
    You never intend on being a possessive, passive consumer, it just kinda happens.
    To me, that final, implied lobotomy flashback is actually... weirdly... hopeful? In this context?
    Its the one time we actually see someone resembling an actual person, but rendered in the ugly, grueling aesthetic. I kinda feel like we're finally seeing the protagonist for the first time, or at least an honest avatar of their worst, inner self that represents the kind of person who couldn't make the relationship with his partner work out.
    Because, the fact is, fixing things, self-improvement IRL, is ugly, messy, and feels horrible.
    And with most media, I wouldn't dream of those visuals being a good thing, but with this strange, subversive title, I just feel so struck by the imagery of anything resembling a real *person* that I can't help but feel like it may suggest that something's... finally coming together. That we're looking at the epiphany moment after someone's been writhing on the floor, in a mewling, snotting mess for seven hours in a dark room, and they finally figured out what they need to do to be less of a trash human. (Is the protagonist actually that bad, or is it all narrative embellishments made by a creative mind with poor self-esteem? Who knows, but facts are secondary to pathos)
    The game this feels like the protagonist is going through the hard work of processing their shit. Even the tense in which they narrate in game actions feels like they're actualizing the process somehow, like an addict finally admitting that they have a problem.
    (If you're actually trying to work on yourself, the half of you fighting change is going to represent the other half as, indeed, some kind of fucked up antagonist out to ruin everything you know and love, and you will wreck your own comfort in the short term to make long term improvements- making the janky-ass doctor an appropriate metaphor for an inner self trying to fix one's own head)
    I do feel like the use of "She" is a combination of subverting video game tropes of "Save the girl," but is also a subversion of how relationships are stereotypically derived from the kinds of relationships you have growing up- that there are patterns based on your parents and childhood friends, etc.
    So the endings to me imply that the protagonist figure out how to come to terms with relationships in a less toxic way...
    Except, I worry they flip-flopped into idolization and appeasement. Seeing others from the perspective of a child, dependant or dog puts them on a pedestal, and ironically still retains the notion of consumption- that you relentlessly depend on them.
    The protagonist just can't stop positioning themselves in relationships in a way where they take, and consume. They thought they got the previous relationship out of their system, they thought they changed, and they learned to treat others gently, and with loyalty. They learned to see others as radiant and wonderful, even, but they still are dependent.
    Now, the implications here are further up to interpretation, because whose to say that being dependent on your loved ones like a dog or a child is bad, per se? Assuming this is all metaphorical, then those are good are consentual relationships we see.
    Maybe the nature of Love is to consume. But thosesame habits, cravings and interactions turn so wrong if you don't handle your shit.

    I'd love to see you cover another somewhat abstract horror game. Little Nightmares is always good for some theorizing, but there are tons of little, spooky gems out there. You've got a fun style, I'd enjoy seeing more from you!

    Damn, I"m new to your channel, and sorry to double post on ya, but you've got a new subscriber. That story is haunting, especially since I work in a creative field, as well, and have a tendency to get buried in my work/forget about social time with the people I love. It's a "but for the grace of... well someone, but not really god... go I."

    so what i got from the game is this: mc found out that his gf (rose, or her) is having an affair with other man, and in his moment of rage, strike them down to the point their bodies mix with each other, and he got capture and sentence to lobotomy (due to his fractured psyche), the game is where his mind start to make peace with itself before the lobotomy is completed

    I think the golden light refers to the climax of man. A selfish climax. I've seen a metaphore that when you climax you see God.
    My take on this is that the man was selfish and didn't take the care She wanted/needed which led her to cheat on him. Both because of his writing obsession and his masturbatory tendencies.
    I don't know if he went full Onanistic first and then she left him, or he prefered to rub it out and then she left him. My take prolly has a lot of holes, but this god thing, climax, golden light, got me thinking about that.

    i thin we are inside of the "god" the gut is referring to. we play as a fragment of the person we are inside of, being made to face our mistakes and the consequences that cant be fixed no matter what we do. sometimes a changed heart doesn't fix everything. people move on.
