- Gregory Horror Show is one of the best games Capcom developed for Sony's PlayStation 2, but it was never released in America and has since limped along a cult title not many gamers are aware of.
So join me as I take a deep dive into one of my all time favourite games with this Gregory Horror Show retrospective

The soul hoarding was the most blatant display of human greed that I've ever seen within gaming.
JUDGEMENT *drops heart*
You let your greed get the hold of you and you persisted on getting all souls at once, in your short sightedness, you get destroyed by one of the guests, loosing all souls and all your health forever, and becoming a permanent resident here. *It was your choice, YOU get to live with it*
imagine dying, and then Death tells you to do his fucking job for him.
Wouldn't complain as long as what Death offers is true.
In fairness, I don’t think he can enter the Hotel.
@@spongeintheshoe Death cheats? Say it isn't so, lol.
@@Cybershroom He cheats to save innocent souls from being trapped for eternity in Gregory House.
In the show he was never able to set foot in the hotel
I met Judgment Boy's original english VA, even served him at my con's maid cafe. He's so awesome, I love Brendan Hunter
No way! That's so cool
Hold up, maid cafe?
Lucky
Did he give you a judgement or give you a soul? Maybe even a tip for you're good service?
@@kenyon7619 it was at a convention so no tips but he did start a bubble fight with the other guests. 10/10 would serve again LMAO
If this looks familiar to you it's the same looks from the cartoon as Pecola on Qubo which sadly shut down since 2021 😭
You know what might've worked well for Judgement boy? If he asks you questions that are directly tied to your play style. For example...
He asks you what's more important, your health or your posessions? If you say health, even though earlier you've spent a long time with a low health bar instead of using healing items, he calls you out on it.
Or he asks you if it's ever ok to steal, and depending on if you've stolen items from people's rooms, you can't answer no without getting punished for it.
Maybe the questions get more tricky later on.
Spying through keyholes could tie into a question about privacy, having the dirty magazine could have a question about kids doing things they are too young for, etc...
By the way, I genuinely thought the Gregory game came first, not the show. Everything just seemed to work so much better as a game. The concept, the characters, the story...
It honestly felt really weird watching the show afterwards.
i feel like another fun one that granted, would only work if you encounter judgement boy later on then usual would be
“Tell me, is your mission to aid Death at upmost importance to you?” or something along the lines, if you answer yes…but just so happened to be hoarding a soul for your own benefit instead of returning it to death, he’d ‘fail’ you
another cool one that can actually make for a good tutorial moment that most players over look would be a morality question if your holding food item. Like say…
“Your a farmer on his way to the market with a fresh harvest looking forward to sell your crops. On the way there however you recognized a beaten and helpless man in a corner as a close friend, crying about ‘being hungry’ and begging for food! Do you bring your crops to the market for profit, or do you feed your hungry friend?”
Answer yes. “I see, you say you’ll feed the man. But i think a resident here would disagree if i asked, JUDGEMENT NOW!”……”You kept your goods to yourself and traded them at the market, in the meantime the friend on the street watches as the man they thought was there friend completely ignore them, and wallowed on the ground unable to move till they starved. It was your choice, and you have to live with it!”
that would have been cool as hell... you're so smart for this...
They might have wanted to do that, but had to change it for time constraints or something. Besides, it seems a bit complex. How would you program something like that?
@@zafool4997 i'm not a programmer, but it wouldn't be that bad. It's just a series of switches, checks and timers. Start a timer whenever your health gets below a certain point, while you also have a healing item in your inventory. Same thing would be checked after picking up a new item. If a couple minutes pass and you haven't used any healing items or healed in another way, but the item is still in your inventory, then turn on a switch. If you DO use it, turn on a different switch.
Depending on which switch is active, Judgement boy will know what you did.
If you never got far enough to turn on either switch, then Judgement boy wouldn't even ask you the question. Instead he'll ask a more general question. Like about stealing or privacy. Something which you're more likey to have already done.
In my version of the game, you probably need to meet Judgement boy three different times and answer the questions honestly each time to get his soul.
@@zafool4997 like Silent Hill 2 does it. Track your status, look for parameters being too high/low, certain flags being set and bam, there you go.
It's crazy to think this series came WAY before Mascot Horror blew up. Good to hear the creator's still doing stuff in this climate.
L Mascot Horror Vs W Gregory Horror Show.
This show was ACTUALLY filled with deep lore, not vague hits to potential lore like FNAF, and I'm surprised the Gregory Horror Show franchise stayed so niche
I was wondering why this looked so familiar, since I had never heard of this game, then I realized when I was a kid I'd seen a show called "Pecola" on TV, which was also created by Naomi Iwata.
Yeah it definitely from Pecola
Iwata's shows are all great, I used to watch Midnight Horror School as a kid, I think the entire series is on CZcams too, I highly recommend it, the concept is super cute, about a school for anthropomorphic lost items that want to find their special abilities to make miracles happen in real life, a must watch during Halloween
Same thing that happened with me! I was so shocked when I found out the style was also used for this horror game!
I remember watching the show on Qubo when i was a kid lol
OMG SO THE PECOLA THING WASNT JUST ME!! YIPPEE IM SO HAPPY THAT SOMEONE KNOWS THAT SHOW ASWELL! :D
There were points as a kid that I was convinced this game was something I'd dreamt up, because everytime I spoke about it, nobody I knew had ever heard of it, I just remember vividly how much Catherine the nurse scared me on my first playthrough.
Honestly ironic but fitting considering the lore.
I have a fear of needles, so she was genuine nightmare fuel for 10 year old me lol
Gregory Horror Show's character designs are on a whole other level in terms of creativity. I love the concepts that some of them have and the execution is super visually interesting, which yes it's mainly due to the art style, but they work great in other styles too. I still want to know how someone managed to come up with characters like Judgement Boy and Catherine because they're just so odd yet unique.
Kinda weird how the horror show for mummy dog is just "Hey, would you willingly take this massive pill? You definitely already know I want to kill you, but would you do it anyways??" And you die because you take the pill that definitely was made to kill you
Unfortunately we are physically incapable of saying no to that dog
I LOVE listening hours of videos of a guy talking about something he's passionate about but that i've never heard before
my favorite genre of youtube video tbh
28:20 is literally that moment when you say “This is a problem for future me” as you’re questioning your past self lol
I had the video pulled up in the background, I was NOT ready for the Naughty Gregory Rat rant.
I clicked on this video because of the character design. i'm from the US and have never once heard of this, but the art style reminds me of a show i watched on Qubo a long time ago called "Pecola"
It's the same creator
@TheGameCupboard that is....absolutely wild to me. I didn't particularly like the show but I remember watching it (before qubo was shut down)and that's such a total shift
"Do you know who I am? They call me Judgement boy!" to "JUDGEMENNNNTT!!" had me dying the past 15 mins 😭
i remember seeing a walkthrough for this game as a little kid. "HURRY UP AND SPIN ME!" still haunts me to this day.
I do like anime judgement more. But game judgement is meme worthy. Imo
Oh 100%
Minos Prime but awesome
It’s making a comeback with it’s kickstarter and the interests of the show is resurging!
Woah, that's huge! Where do I find it? It seems obscure
@@maudley not anymore thanks to the furry fandom
@@Polychi1998 What?
@@GribbleGob unless its really recent then most people probably don't know about it. Me included
@@maudley it's on the creator's twitter
I was seriously just thinking about this game a few days ago and I’m so happy to see it hasn’t been forgotten. The art director(?) also created one of my favorite cartoons (pecola) growing up back when we only had free cable named and square/cube style makes his work so iconic to me
Opening up with a clickbait apology because of the cursed algorithm is very honest and brave, especially since I almost skipped it due to the title.
The scene almost an hour in though, yeah that's a subscribe.
Thanks for giving it a chance
Can I get a timestamp for said scene?

Found this game when Joel played through it on stream a few years back, and fell in love. As for the ending, it's very in line with a rather dark quote I've heard, that Hell is a place you send yourself. Cheers, was just showing my friend some vids on the game the other day!
I remember this, not the game I didn’t know existed, but I do remember a short video series for both male and female version of the characters. It was like a POV thing with small little episodes. I loved and watch them both repeatedly. I had no idea there was a game. This is like a flashback to the past. I’m so happy you made this.
34:36
i can't stop laughing at the konpeito being called 'sugared almonds'
like.. that's some jelly donut shit right there! could've just called them 'candy'
They’re called sugared almonds in England.
I was literally just thinking about this game the other day, shame it never released in the states, would have loved this game. Thanks for covering it, keep up the great stuff!
Man, even though I’ve never seen or heard of this show/game until watching this video, it instantly gives me nostalgia from the early 2000s. The graphics, gameplay, and writing just invoke memories from those simpler days. 😢
Isn't that My Son's screwdriver!
this game is weirdly cute, I also feel the same that the protagonist, is cozy horror, is feel sad leaving it behind
I remember seeing cutscenes from this game years ago it has a unique kid friendly horror charm to it.
love the reference when talking to neko zombie and being able to guess she wants to eat a mobile phone
You have no idea the nostalgia I felt watching the whole PS2 intro. Good memories.
Wow, it never came to the US? Wow.
I didn't realize.
I had a friend in college who got all kinds of weird/imports back in the day and I played a lot of cool stuff because of them. I didn't know this was an import.
We just hung out, they brought the games, I brought the food.
Also introduced me to some interesting stuff like Okage: Shadow King, Shadow Hearts and... Stretch Panic.
They were cool AF.
Holy shit a fellow okage fan? I keep finding more lately.
@@bootstrapphoenix6456 And now a fellow Okage fan has found you. I technically got introduced to it through A Hat In Time (the Snatcher and Evil King Stan look somewhat similar, and I had found it in the drawer where we keep the Playstation games while looking for some other PS2 game). Too bad my original copy was damaged, but I was able to get another copy to play the game.
@@WALLE1D1W same actually! But I never played the ps2 version, i played the ps4 version. Plus I found okage through tumblr way back when via that one snatcher blog that made the headcanon that stan is snatchers dad lol
Okage: Shadow King is one I really want to play but haven't gotten around to yet. Future video maybe?
Not sure if someone told you this yet, but the female player model is based off of Claire redfield's re2 design if memory serves me right
Edit: okay it looks somewhat like her, but it appears I mistook the flower shirt for a red jacket
Found out about this from Joel Vargskelethor's stream vods. Immediately got hooked. So cool to see it getting more love.
i actually almost missed this video because of the clickbait title.. i kept being like. um ive been into gregory horror show for ages -_-.. but when my anti-clickbait addon kicked on and changed the title and thumbnail on PC i finally went aahhh fine ill go for it. glad i did, i really enjoy your style of coverage and it was nice to revisit the hotel. and learn about the kickstarter!! new sub, easy
Thank you for giving it a chance. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
By far most underrated franchise. A true definition of a hidden gem
I am so so so so so so glad to have stumbled on you! I don't even know that there was more Gregory Horror Show stuff to be had! For sure going to check out that Kickstarter today - we need to see what we can do! Sending tons of love from across the pond, thank you for the amazing video!
The show is a real treat. I was introduced to Gregory Horror Show many years ago on some let's play channel and was charmed by the weird setting and funny characters. I hope there will be more to come.
This was a show?? I used to have a DVD of a Gregory Horror Show series. I got it from Walmart in the early 00's. I thought it was just a surreal webshow or something
Jeez, I remember catching a Let's Play of this game back in the primordial days of CZcams. I think it was someone like cloud8745 or something close to that? Really surprisingly impactful, I still quote this game. Any time I gamble on RNG in a game or have to rely on a lucky draw in a card game, I always say, "Which will it be, money or love? Judgment!!!" I always wanted to play this game, but I play all my PS2 games on OG hardware and no US release makes that hard for me. I'll emulate it one day.
I still consider Cloud8745 an important figure in the evolution of Video Game LP videos, and I found he was funny and entertaining. It's always cool to hear about another person who remembers his stuff.
I love Gregory Horror Show ❤
I think I'd be too anxious to play the game, I lose my mind when getting chased. Thanks for showing this off for those of us who can't play!
im glad someone is talking about this game! never played it as a kid, but i remember the art style striking a chord with me.
I'm definitely watching the show after this video! It looks so fun! Also, I can't get over Judgement Boy screaming "JUDGEMENT!" Idk why it's so funny to me-
I think it was middle school when i found this game but i remember being immediately invested because the art style was the same as that one Qubo show Pecola. Ive never played but ive always wanted to and im glad someone is talking about it. I hardly see anyone talk about this
Joel vinesauce is how I learned about this game. I've been obsessed ever since.
Judgement boy is my favorite
Death having the Swedish flag on his head as a reference to The Seventh Seal? that's p cute
I'm glad more people are exposed to this game. I own it and find it endlessly charming. I think the art style and mood really holds up, I'm surprised that after all these years nothing else has been done with that franchise outside of a fanmade web comic.
Hopefully the kickstarter is a success. I'd love another game.
Actually there's a sequel to the game AND at least three different animated series (of shorts) with the final one focusing on Catherine. The first series is basically just a retelling of the plot of the first game.
Oh one more thing, the english voice actor of Judghment boy from the anime is returning as confirmed by the creator!
Hi fellow Gregory Horror Show fan here and I really liked your review of this game and enjoyed your video! I'm always happy to see more GHS fans out there this show/game has inspired me a lot I make Gregory Horror Show styled Cardboard Crafts/Art even up to this day also I appreciate you boosting the GHS Kickstarter hopefully it goes well so we can have more Gregory Horror Show
This art style reminds me of the Qubo cartoon called Pecola
I love your honesty at the beginning of the video. Thank you!
I actually have an original physical copy of this game which used to be my neighbour's, we used to take turns playing this when we were kids, then a few years ago he gave me his copy along with a bunch of other games he decided to leave in my case as he was moving out of his childhood home.
I think I watched somebody do this as a noncommentated lets play a long long time ago. I just so happened to be thinking about this game when it was recommended to me.
I hope you enjoyed it :)
Tbh, wasn't there a vinesauce gameplay of it?
This game along with carnevil are some of my favorite obscure spooky games.
it's funny how I found GHS to begin with, I learned about it through "Pecola" a Japanese-Canadian TV show I watched as a kid. They share the same Creator and a similar blocky character designs!
This video has started a new hyperfixation for me this game is so fucking cool if I had the money I would donate omfg
I remember getting a DVD of a bit of the show this was based on after seeing a playthrough of the game. It's an interesting show and had a unique vibe to it. Very surreal
I remember seeing the full series on CZcams a few years back, it’s super well done and honestly I do wish it got more of a following.
So it was quite the surprise to see someone years later do a full retroscape of the game. Seems that clickbait title got enough attention for the algorithm to notice
I love the fact that I was first introduced to Gregory’s Horror Show after playing a short horror dating simulator
what horror dating simulator was it?
@@ranchustars3050 Picture perfect boyfriend
double weird is there was a little Gregory Horror Boardgame with gatcha style booster packs released in the US in 2002-03
I remember trying to get my hands on a copy of this game over a decade ago and not being able to get one. It's just so rare.
The art style is frying my brain because this visual style was from a kids show i used to watch called pecola
the artstyle reminds me of a show I watched as a child named pecola
It's a crying shame that games like these fall under the category of; If you know, you know.
Thank you for this video.
People have already said it, but I'm just confirming it; This game has the exact same style as an obscure T.V. show I watched as a kid called _Pecola,_ which, coincidentally, was also created by the same studio and Naomi Itawa.
Absolutely mind-blowing that this has a connection to a weird, niche show I saw as a kid... and is an OFFICIAL licensed product by the SAME studio.
I've been looking for this game for literally more than a decade! I watched something of it when I younger and couldn't remember anything of the plot, honestly thought that it was a show. All I remembered was the visual style and that it was very weird. Thank you for helping me find it again!
I’m very impressed by the visuals here. The character models are very simplistic, but the environments are very well detailed, and the shadows everywhere are extremely impressive for PS2.
This game looks a lot of fun, could se kid me playing hours and hours of this game .
I watched my friend stream this for a few days (until she finished it).
Fun memories.
The thing that I'll always remember from this game is Roulette boy's "Here' s a present for ya!" but her game was a bit jank, so he repeats the last bit of his voiceline; so we always hear "Here's a present for ya- for ya!".
This was my childhood game! I loved SO MUCH but I got stuck since I didn't know English back then, so what I did is replay it over and over again until got to the part I couldn't get past but it was fun each time. After I grew older and learned English I replayed it using a PS2 emulator and finally finished it, it was amazing, it felt amazing and it was still as fun as it was when I played it as a kid. I wish they made another game since the show continued and there are new characters.
The algorythm pushed me here, and i'm impressed. I do like your take on this and i'll go through some more of your videos, gotta say hearing you have adhd and seeing your gameplay made more sense, because it's how i would play and I have adhd.
Well, the clickbait title worked, I got your video recommended. And I'm glad! You got a new sub :)
I watched cloud8745 play this back in the goldenage of youtube, thank you for this amazing memory!
I never played, but I remember watching a gameplay of it when I was a kid, it appears on a TV show about games in my country once
That memory hit me just now
I remember watching the show online in October a few years ago, it was quite a fun watch, and I usually don't see horror related content that much. I do hope the Kickstarter for a localization goes well. More people should be introduced to this wonderful series.
Since this video won't leave me alone I should use this as an opportunity to mention the creator is relaunching the Kickstarter for the English translation of Gregory Horror Show: Soul of Roses (the game).
Thank you so much for doing a review on GHS, it’s crazy to see someone playing it even in 2024!
Some of your choices make me wonder if you had some 'laughing shrooms' during your playthrough yourself 😂
Hahaha, you and me both 😂
I first saw this game from watching Vargskeltor play it.
Probably the first time I really watched something of his all the way to the end, and I think the reason what drew me into it was the charming cartoony art style.
But it really does surprise me that it never released in the US here with the dialogue being set for it, and I guess I suspect that the possible sales or interest may have been why it never did.
Watching this does put some interesting facts of the game and anime in mind, especially to the end when I was wondering what became of the series since. And being that you released this video now with the Kickstarter mention is starting to get me really interested in seeing more now.
Gregory Horror Show is one of those games that I love, but never finished. You'd be surprised how many games I adore end up in this category. That being said, I did watch a funny Swedish man play through the whole thing, and it's one of my favorite playthroughs on CZcams!
Gregory Horror Show is such an underrated gem!
This has been an enjoyable watch so far, thank you for making this video and bringing attention to it here in 2024 :D
It looks like that one show on Qubo. Pecola.
It's the same creator
Actually found out about this back when Newtype USA was still in print in the early 2000s- the anime demo discs included an episode of the Gregory Horror Show; the game later came after. Definitely suggest checking out both.
So happy i found this video. I've been a huge fan of the show for years now and it was awesome to hear that it's been kept somewhat alive over the years
I was first introduced to this game's source material through someone on YT long ago. Later Seeing Capcom being licensed to make it into something in the vein of Clocktower was a good fit.
I remember finding this show through a forum and just binging it in one go. Had no idea there was a game. Fantastic!
Man, i remember getting stuck on Judgement Boy for the longest time! Almost made me quit the game back in the day xD
Also, screw Roulette Boy and his game!
Do you know my naaame?
Man this game is such a trip, no matter how many times I see others experience it or explain about it. I always loved the character designs, quirkyness, spooky atmosphere and the strange messages the game had. I watched the fmv anime a few years back and it was very good. I wish them the best luck with the kickstarter, as I'd absolutely adore another game, even if its a 2d roguelite. Awesome video covering it and glad i'm not the only one who felt like they wanted to do more with the game than they actually did.
Thought it was a modern indie game when i saw the thumbnail! I have never played but after this i would love to look for it now.
Great video!
This!!! I watched cutscenes on yt like 10 years ago and have been wondering if it was real or not lmao
I love this game. I bought it off a market stall in 2009 for £6 and just fell in love with the characters and mechanics. It remains one of my favourite PS2 titles to this day 😁
Absolute bargain!
Its a shame they never remastered this for 3ds, would make a perfect 3ds game
What a fantastic video! I don't think I'll forget this game or your video.
Oh my friend LOVES Gregory Horror Show, he introduced me to it on CZcams! Definitely sending this his way! :D
I remembered watching a LP of this game years ago I think from OvertheGun and thought it was such a weird game. Really enjoyed watching this breakdown because it got me all nostalgic for the early day of YT 😆
Really well made video, you just got yourself a subscriber!
I played this when I was 10 and for many years I was convinced that I had dreamt it all up, until a few years ago when I told my partner about it and went down a rabbit hole to find it. It terrified and stressed me out so much as I kid, I wonder what effect it had on my tiny brain lol.
TBH I wasn't thinking "What are you doing" I was thinking "How do you even get Cactus Gunman's soul tho"
Pity the crowd funding for that localization didn’t make it...
Hopefully the fans will do something about it
After all, if the three art gallery became found subbed after being lost media, no way are fans gonna accept not learning the game's story
ISNT THAT MY SONS SCREWDRIVER???!!!🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think the reason why this judgement boy is different canonically is that (the real) jb gold isn't around to help with rehearsals, and this is one of the new guys. If you remember in season 2, the protag walks in on a judgement boy rehearsal.
Also, the money or love thing is kinda lost on the judgement boy encounter in season 3 so... I dont think it matters? I think its simply a lie detector at this point...
Well, the title might have been a clickbait but honestly, it worked! I came here straight from the front page and since is from one of my favorite games for ps2 I just had to watch it
Do what you must to survive the algorithm my dude
Whooo Gregory horror show mentioned!! Commenting to help the algorithm !!
I never actually played it but watched a many hour long playthrough back in highschool and hunted down all the DVDs! (Even my OC Ashton has a small nod to nekoZombie)
