Because they lost all rights to their children, already, even if they do have more the state can and will literally take the child away from them. It doesn't happen very often but if you demonstrate to a family court that you're unfit to be a parent and never attempt to change that, you can lose the right to raise children.

I’ve done that. I was doing an estimate for wedding flowers, talked the bride and her mother down from dyed blue orchids in the bridal bouquet (hope you like blue dye on your white dress~~) and they pulled the “Well we talked to [independent florist], who said they could do it for cheaper.” (I work for a corporation, so I’m going to be cheaper than an independent florist)
This is after a 45 minute bridal consult, so I’m already annoyed. Not only had I offered to deliver everything to the venue for free (it was across the parking lot from us, so no big deal) (also I know for a fact that the venue is high-end as hell) but I knew for a fact that there was no way they were telling me the truth. So I said “Okay. Well, I’m sorry to hear that, but I understand.”
They started panicking and said the free delivery would make up for it in the end, and that the flowers wouldn’t have to travel as far this way or some bullshit explanation.
The wedding was a few months away, so I called a month later, after doing the work to source product from my vendors, and left a message for her to call back and confirm. Nothing.
I left another message to call me back and confirm, saying I wasn’t going to order product (it was about a $2500 order, so probably $1750 in flowers or so, special containers for the centerpieces she wanted, etc) until she confirmed.
Another couple weeks go by and I ask my assistant to phone the bride’s mother since she was listed as a secondary contact. (My assistant and I didn’t always get along, she could be an entitled boomer who resented that I was half her age, but I still appreciate how pissed off she was for me.) I was doing something else and heard her suddenly go quiet. She said something like “Well, it’s your loss.” And hung up. It took her a minute to calm down enough to tell me “She said her daughter decided to go with a *real* florist.” (To clarify, I’m a certified floral designer. I just chose to sell my soul to work at a corporation for job security and decent wages/benefits.)
My manager, who is one of the worst human beings I’ve ever met, even went over and bought me a coffee when she found out, and *she* was pissed.
You best believe I went out on the day of that twat’s wedding, gave the venue a double middle finger salute and wished her husband-to-be a quick divorce.
(To compare, one of the first weddings I did on my own about 8 years ago, the bride’s mother became a regular customer of mine, and even came to my new store when I was transferred to visit because she missed me.)
I couldn’t help but think about that bridezilla from story 1 during that.
(Sorry for the rant. It’s been a few years but that “real florist” shit still bugs me.)

That last story hits home hard. My parents adopted a friend of my brothers who grew up in a very similar situation. His parents were Jehovah's witnesses & absolutely the worst POS to walk the earth. His dad was a raging alcoholic who beat the crap out of him & his sister "because the Bible says it's ok to beat your kids". Plus the church said it was fine to discipline your kids any way you deem fit. Both parents also sexually molested their kids. What did the "Elders" of the church do once J& his sister went to them for help. Not a damn thing. They were told to shut up & they deserved to be beaten because they were liars & had become "worldly". My parents got custody of J at 16 & his sister ran off & married her BF to escape. It didn't end there. His parents would send letters, phone calls threatening to kill him & & assault my.parents. They found his dad on my parents property one evening in his pickup truck with a shotgun intending to kill J. Cops had a chat with him. Not sure what was said but he never came back. Then the members of Jehovah's witnesses came to the house demanding to see & speak to J. By then my parents had had it. My mom is ex-military & has a lovely German temper & the mouth of biker. She went black out rage mode on those fools telling them what POS they & their so called religion are & to GTFO or they were going to meet the Lord then & there. My mom does not play. How the church allowed & encouraged abuse & lied to cover up said issues. The things that were done to J & his sister were disgusting, revolting & heartbreaking. Why the police didn't do anything is because of small town, good old boys mindset & the police where they live are useless AF. This was 20 yrs ago & J & his sister are doing well. Both needed therapy for quite a while & have gone on to live a good life. His dad died of a sudden heart attack many years ago & his mom is a well known, very popular child's book author. She pretends to the world to be the best, most awesome wholesome mom 2nd to June Cleaver & will deny any wrong doing. To this day I whole heartily despise the Jehovah's witnesses & their doctrine. Anytime they show up on my or my family's doorstep we go ballistic on them. That whole religion is nothing more than a distorted, twisted, sick cult.

Last story: K is lucky that they only kicked her out and didn’t straight up unalive her. A few years I heard on the news that one guy was secretly gay but he kept it extremely secret because his parents were exactly like K’s only much more violent (they were known to start fights when drunk) anyway one day the guy said something innocent that let it slip that he was gay and then suddenly he disappeared, no one could reach him and when they actually confronted the parents they acted like he never existed. It wasn’t until a week later that the police found his body in a dumpster. Autopsy showed that he had been stabbed multiple times, they weren’t able to find the weapon but it was quite obvious that the parents were the cause of the death because everyone knew what bigoted and violent they were. The dad was the primary culprit because he was the most violent ( I heard that he was actually given the death penalty) the mom was charged as a co conspirator and given life in prison with no possibility of parole. The poor guy was only 16 when they did it to him. So K is extremely lucky to have survived because that could have taken a very dark turn very fast.

By believing in yourself! (And not living in medieval europe)
Our physical wellbeing is strongly connected to our mental well being and thus our believe.
And thus humans have the mental capacity to kill themselves "simply" by actually believing it (psychogenic death) or to gain hysterical strength when believed to be neccessary.
Many deaths are simply caused by "giving up", by believing you can't safe yourself, even if you could... including hypothermia related ones where people literally just do nothing and die.
Psychogenic deaths also Voodoo Deaths are caused by the fear and/or the Nocebo effect, where the brain simply shuts the body down after being unable to comprehend potential survival.
But the human body can do unbelievable things if you allow yourself to believe you can do it.
Even pain and fatigue are technically just semi-illusions, and can be 100% mentally induced (phantom pain), even when your body is completly undamaged und still ready to work.
Death by Hypothermia is a perfect example for this, because humans that kneel down and pray can die from hypothermia in 20+°C weather, while humans that keep moving, will unbroken can survive even negative degree Celsius for extended periods of time.
In medieval europe only christians would die of hypothermia or drowning, because people that survived such events were burned for witchcraft, together with everyone else that displayed any kind of hysterical strength.
According to the church any kind of hysterical strength is a sign of demonic possesion, but biologically it's your brain telling your body to do whatever the fuck is neccessary by flooding your system with adrenaline to get your muscles working at their actual limits and epinephrine to silence the illusion of pain and fatigue.
God and his Followers want to quench your flame, they want to mentally break you and bow to "him", and thus to them, being his representatives. They'll always demand only the best from you.
But Satan is the methaphorical fire that burns inside of you, and the voice inside your head, that tells you to believe in yourself! Because "he" simply wants what's best for you!
The "devil", the biggest enemy of the church, is the will to survive on your own!

What sucks about the last story is that, if the parents work like other fundamentalist and extreme religious groups and people, they won't learn their lesson. They're going to view everything that happened to them as evidence of them being persecuted, and unfortunately it'll probably only lead to them digging themselves deeper into their own ideology. I think their behavior during the events may show that that's probably what's going to happen. No, I'm not saying all religious people are like this, most aren't. Just the people who take it to extremist and fundamentalist levels such as the parents in the story.

My only wish is that they would have to spend nights in the cold snow shoeless like they did to their daughter. Also, I am sadly guessing jail is nowhere near as bad as the torturous places they were going to send her to fix what was not broken. There is no way God approves of places like that. I wish the daughter the very best in life and I hope it is happiness for her here from here on out. I’m so glad that she has the support of her brother and good friends.

Just a question to rSlash about the last story: why would K have had to go through puberty to know she was a lesbian? Many people have a general idea of what their romantic preferences are pretty early on in life.

There's actually a law in the Bible called Timothy 5:8. Basically the moment those toxic waist religious parents abandoned their daughter in the cold is the moment they willingly damned their own souls to the most horrible darkest pits of Hell.

First story: When someone tells you "in that other place were cheaper than my ridiculous price." is BS. And anyone can see she's trying to scam OP from a mile away.
