Beautiful memories, I am almost 56 and remember them as a BIG part of my youth , going over my friends house on Sunday's to watch the show ! Also I remember in 1987 seeing "live " on Letterman " sing " I Got You Babe " ...tears in my eyes watching it then and now as I felt that would be the very last time they would be singing together and it was ! ( you can see Sonny get emotional )... They are a Hall of Fame act !
Ps I never noticed at the exact end of them singing on Lettmans show Sonny looked as though he actually choked up ! It had to of been really emotional "Wow" as if he wanted to tell Cher , I'm sorry most importantly - I love you always - just because a relationship doesn't work out it doesn't mean the " Love" is ever any less as though it never existed so , sad look at is facial expression he swipes under his nose right there I bet - Cher knew to hold him to keep him from totally loosing it , she said , I felt I had to be the one to hold him this time he did so for her what practically her entire life.. Ironically Sonny is the one who made her a star and a household name, as a couple. However, she would have never become the superstar diva, we know today, if she hadn't divorced him. He wouldn't have been able to stand back in the wings while she took her career to the level she did. A big part of her success, after Sonny, came because of her freedom and ability to live the way she wanted, and not the way Sonny scripted everything for her in her life. It's sad really, because I loved them as Sonny & Cher, but we would have never gotten to hear those great solo songs she did or see her great acting ability. Sonny was as much a father figure as he is was a husband for her. He took care of her during the young and naive years, and prepared her for the world. But had to let her leave the nest in the end.
A fabulous documentary proof that life does come full circle before death. Had Cher never agreed to sing here on David Letterman, it would of been a huge regret considering Sonny then passed a few months after fliming this last show with them together, forever to remain the very last time ! I'm so glad I caught this show that evening. I honestly believe in destiny they had there beginning & ending, the thoughts that ran through both their minds this evening, I bet raced each moment they had spent together as well as when it was over had them both going home knowing they not only once loved eachother that we the fans still loved them 40 yrs later ! When Cher said, for once she got this feeling she needed to comfort him after they sang this song , that she felt she had to hold him for once says it all , her six sense was warning her which I wonder if that feeling came over him a kind of , deja vu ! I wonder what exactly had been their last words as they parted ways to go home that evening surely, each one had to know they were great together, a bond never dies, a true bond not one that had nothing but hate and never spoke to one another ever as if they had never been nope !! No I’m was and always been a #1 fan of you both. I knew and know felt how you both felt about each other. I have this thing about seeing people’s thought good bad feelings. You both had that special bond with each other. You both gave birth to a very beautiful daughter/son. Chasity now Chase turned out to be just like the both of you. Being a big fan of both of you hurt me when you both broke up. But hurt me more when he past away. The first thing that hit me was thinking about you and how you felt. @caprice6 i think they always did love eachother, but afterwards more like brother & sister/ father & daughter. i think it was cher who ended the marriage as she felt like a slave to sonny; due to the age gap he was still making career descisions for her, she felt like a slave, also she didn't believe that he accepted the fact that she was growing up and wanting to do other things. people say it was a shame they broke up, but it made them their own people, helped them with their own successes

What broke up Sonny & Cher was the stress of the business, they did not have quality time with themselves, always an act.
They should have never divorced. That was a mistake. Divorce is generally the wrong thing.
