Today my mission is to funnel the surfaces abundance of oxygen down to those in need at the primary containment facility using only Subnautica's Air Pipes. All I have to do is not drown or get eaten in the process, how hard can it be?

So important that the pda lady constantly suggests it :D

A few thoughts from an engineer -- no consulting fee required. 😁
You''d need a pump that could generate high pressure, to overcome the water pressure at the outlet end. At 1450 meters that would be about 2100 psi (assuming Earth-like conditions on 4546B). We have pumps that will do that, so Alterra certainly will. You'll need pressure-regulators at all the outlet points, so the work crew can breathe the air. No different from what a scuba diver puts in his mouth.
You'd need some extra pump capacity to overcome the resistance of moving through that long pipe -- I'm not going to calculate that, but a second 2100-psi pump should be more than enough.
I would start on the beach of Space-Gun Island and just follow the terrain all the way down, anchoring the pipe to the terrain with braces all the way. This would protect the pipe from collisions with Reefbacks and bending due to cumulative current forces. It would be easier for the work crews, too, having a solid surface to stand on at all times.
Since the giant red moon would actually produce insane tidal fluctuations, it might be necessary to start at the TOP of Space-Gun Island -- without numbers I can't calculate, but the intake needs to be high enough to collect air even during high-tide, unless you want to build storage tanks and a control system to switch between supply sources depending on whether the inlet is under water. For long-term robustness, I'd go with the simple system, which means putting the inlet as high as it needs to be. You'll need more pump capacity because the pressure at the bottom will be higher at high tide.
It might also be wise to run TWO complete pipe systems along different paths, so if one is damaged, the other will still carry air until repairs can be performed. We DO have leviathans and volcanic activity to worry about, after all.
Building inside the containment facility is an unknown -- would the maintenance droids see the pipe as a foreign object and try to dismantle it? A defense system might be necessary. We also might need to change our attachment method, if the alien alloy can't be drilled for bolt holes. Would adhesive stick to the alloy? We might need to lay a concrete footing. Would having a pipe constantly there compromise the water-exclusion forcefield? Filling the facility with water won't harm our pipe, but it might not be great for the facility.
This would be expensive, of course, but an insane man living alone in a titanium-rich environment with a universal fabricator has a different notion of economics than you and I do. Notice the assumption that we can't just build a FAR shorter pipe through the teleport gateway -- he's trying to keep busy, after all.
This is the kind of brilliant comment I live for in fan communities. You do a serious breakdown of the problem but you also don't take it so seriously that you dismiss the whole idea as dumb. You commit to the bit and work out what it would actually take to do. I love it. :3

@@BrianatorFTW It's like all those old fairy tales where the hero has to figure out how to complete the impossible task, except you're trying to do it with logic instead of "here's a magic feather I got earlier".

@@TheMemeLord700 yeah! What he built is just a absolutely gigantic version of the little bubble thingies people put in fishtanks
My guess is the pipes either have limited range of building in some way, perhaps a bubble projected from the pump or base attachment, and then once you hit the end of it it won't build that way, or the pipes after a certain length cause the game to get confused

Ah yes, the cave/surface interface. I have seen a lot of bugs having to do with building bases across that divide. I like to do it anyway, but animations and lighting gets really broken.

I wonder if the pipes have an unintentional connection limit or build limit since the problem reared its head three times.
I did have a play with them after this and the issue seems to be present on the surface to if you take them into caves, so maybe it's something to do with how the game renders terrain? Not sure though!
@@iAletho I suspect it has to do with horizontal distance from the floating air pump. The game is designed with verticality in mind, after all. Distant bases aren't simulated as detailed as the one you are near, and it's possible that the air pump is now located in the outer simulation shell, which is not accessible from the inner simulation shell you are in. It can't detect the pump, probably throws a hidden error, which is caught in the general exception handling for collisions and stuff, and your attempt to build is rejected.
@@SeedlingNLHm, interesting idea, but at the same time, why would that stop him from building a vertical pipe but allow him to build a horizontal one? It seemed that down was the specific direction it didn’t want him to go.
The dedication is outstanding. Nice work, Aletho!
Thanks Demons-And-Demigods! Lets just say it took awhile! :D
I salute the building Mission Aletho. Always cool to see these. Wish these air pipes had more use in base Subnautica. That aside, this will be a fun watch!

Brooo you have the best quality vids
And the commitment to the thumbnail is just mind boggling

ah yes, fixing the planet 4546b one pipe at the time.
We can do this Carlos!
Pro tip for both games when you use prawn suit: The drill arm plus the propulsion cannon arm is a good combo, The propulsion cannon arm being used to fling smaller creatures the hell away from you or bringing them in closer so you can absolutely grind them with the drill arm, its a pretty good offensive and defensive combo not forgetting that the 2 arms together are very useful in mining too
Give this man a reward, all of his videos perfectly line up.

you're such a nice person! giving the poor drowning fishes the oxygen to breathe!
You could get to the bottom using the exterior growbed and the Brain Coral clipping. You just have to wait patiently for it to grow at the previous growbed, and remember where each growbed is.
This makes me want to play Subnautica again, but then I remember all the game breaking glitches.
I love your thumbnails, are you drawing them? Because they look pretty!
Yeah they're drawn notkayra :)

I never finished this game but now I might go finish it
That pipe glitch has driven me insane
For some reason I really wanna do this now
Haha good luck soapfaces, it'll take awhile 😂
Great video with outstanding quality! How long did you record for this?
The challenge world itself is sat at 5 hours, although that doesn't include extra recording I did for story telling purposes and stuff like that. Overall the video took about 30 ish hours to make, everything included, I'd say about 10/15 hrs of that were direct recording (but it could also be more). I record most of my shots individually which makes things take even longer, every camera change is normally a new recording (except in this case the challenge footage). Hopefully that helps! :)
Heh, my map mod caused collision box glitches. Terrifying when a Reaper pokes through a mountain cave wall, hilarious when a Sea Dragon gets trapped in the PCF main room; I have a pet now!

Yea the pipes are garbage. I tried using them to get into the jellyshroom cave and they had the sane glitch right at the entrance
I assumed it was a depth limit, or only a certain # of pipes allowed per pump. Seems like the developers didnt really think the system through.
Anyway, cool vid. Confirmed that pumps are useless. Thanks
Haha, yes they are a bit useless, it seems they glitch out around cave entrances which makes me think its something to do with how the terrain is rendered
Garsh darn it if only I watched the video at the end or I wouldn’t have also constructed an industrial pipe to the Mariana Trench
Damn it Tegu, we would make a good team!

I've been playing Subnautica for a while, and somehow I missed that there's a chasm leading directly from the surface to the lava zone. I guess because I don't usually spend too much time in the bulb zone.
I do know that you can go straight down with the C button, though, which is quite useful when piping oxygen or making vertical corridors on a base.
A Warper decided that his claws would make a good edition to my face is some of the best writing I’ve heard.
10 minutes of Aletho laying pipe
Next, you should build a base that goes from the surface to the bottom

89 likes with mine, and it was posted 32 minutes ago and it's a master piece :) Exactly like the game itself.
I appreciate the 89th like! :) glad you enjoyed it!
I am pretty sure the pipes have no limits but that there are invisible walls preventing pipes from passing for some reason. But, after experimenting at the jellyshroom cave, this wall isnt perfect and there are some spots you can squeeze a pipe through by gluing it as close as possible against the walls. There surely is a similar solution for the other caves.
nice video
Thanks Aleksandar!
Good video
Thank you! :)
I have a theory for why subnautica has a breathable atmosphere.
Even if there are sparse land masses with vegitation plus the fact the polar regions seem to have more land available for terrestrial plants I don’t think it’s quite enough for terrestrial or airborne organisms to survive so my guess is there’s colonies of bacteria living near and/or on the surface of said planet’s global ocean absorbing carbon dioxide and other byproducts of other organisms and release oxygen into the atmosphere as a waste product.
That’s how oxygen was first created on earth as a waste product of bacteria.
Yeah I noticed that glitch with the pipes it does not like crossing over different biomes
The second you placed the first pipe, you had already beaten the challenge. This is because nobody uses these.
Haha yep, I don't think I'd ever used these before making this video!
thats crazy
I hate the blood kelp experience
At least they glow which is... kinda cool? xD

I want to play this since it's in early access, never tried yet.
You should give it a go bicycleman!
Breathe air? No we breathe oxygen here
*metal pipe sound effect intensifies*
i think it would be cool if the vechicles had their own supply of oxygen, and base would't just generate it out of nothing but would require an device that splits water into oxygen and hydrogen or a pipe to the surface, or plants
Sorry im late great video🎉
Oo maybe the next video could be about penglings, and at the end you can refer to this video😂
I do love me a pengling
I liked the game but I couldn't do that lol. I'd just use the oxygen plant along the way 😂
I honestly don't blame you Robert xD
“The creatures living in the depths don’t need air”
Actually they do, and since deep water tends to be fairly low in oxygen (due to plants needing sunlight and the deep sea having none of that) they probably got some benefit from the oxygen. Thanks to you the Sea Dragons will be repopulating the area in no time.
