Because people want to see amazing highlights. Joker is killing everyone but because he doesn’t dunk on people, it’s always considered a “quiet” game even when the dude gets 30-10-8. He reminds me of a new age Duncan. Just goes about his business, and his team wins.
Not the case. Just ironic that a white man is dominating the league and gets all his deserved awards. “Now” it’s all about voting right lmao 🤦🏾♂️
Shaq is dead wrong. How many HOFers actually watch all the games? What if a voter doesn't watch Bucks games and doesn't know if Giannis is deserving or not?
That's ludicrous. And don't act like former players don't make it their life's mission to hate on today's players. None of them can be trusted to be honest
This is exactly what is happening now with the media as voters. They don't watch small market teams and there are definitely media members that hate on specific teams and players
I'm pretty sure the people who have votes have a criteria they would have to follow to have that vote.

I think the key word in MVP isn't player, but value. How do you assign value to the best players in a league full of the greatest players. It's their contribution towards a winning environment. Steve Nash the years he won it, was not because he was the best player, but he was the focus of their team synergy. He made their engine run. So which individual player has the most effect on their team playing winning basketball.
Shaq disagrees (doesn't matter your valid point).
Also it's easier to put up impressive numbers on a trash team. If you shine on a stacked team it's more impressive, or if you are COMPLTELY carrying a team you shine too
That's what the award should be. It should be what's the team's ceiling with player X and what's their floor without them. That's how you'd ascertain their "value".
@@str8nashtygaming466 NASH would go to the bench winning by 20 and they would go down to 2 points.
A couple of days ago LUKA went to the bench with the game 15-10...all of a sudden the game turn into 24-10...KYRIE was on the floor and couldnt create anything.
MAVS start losing by 33 points and KYRIE starts scoring.
Next game KYRIE scoreless in the 1st quarter..later MAVS are winning by 20 and Thats when KYRIE scores 16 points.
SO a lot of player have their stats on trash minutes.
THATS why VALUE over replacement is a great stat to show who is really valuable or not.
@@onlyfacts3178exactly how it should be because players can’t control if the organization build a good roster around them. For me it’s more impressive and more valuable a player that brings the team from the 15th seed to the playoffs than a guy who makes a 3/4 seed a first spot team, both are superstars and really good players, but one is definitely more valuable. Since the MVP is a regular season award, we can’t take into account the playoffs hence we can’t consider if a player is so valuable to his team to make them win a championship
Cmon JJ, he knows it's Dwight for the Magic. He should be backing his teammate, Dwight was a monster in his Magic days. Shaq and Kobe literally ruined this guys reputation. How did Dwight not make the top 75 but Dame, CP3 and Melo did? I have nothing against those guys, but their accolades do not even come close to Dwight's and the main reason for Dwight not to get the recognition he deserves is because of the fact that Shaq always ridiculed him on national television and Kobe thought Dwight was lazy. Kobe also thought that Shaq was lazy but Shaq is still a top 3 centre ever. Is a shame seeing Dwight's old teammates also not speaking up for him, when Dwight always seems like a positive guy, was a monster defensively and covered a lot of his teammates mistakes singlehandedly, and literally carried that Magic team to the finals. Oh yeah, he also won a ring with the Lakers in which he was not riding the bench, but was a key player in some games too.
Fax. Dwight was generational. (Low key)
Lol did you really just try to throw in CP3 with Dame and Melo? CP3 is another stratosphere from those guys and Dwight
Dwight should definitely be top 75 but i feel like dame the only one out of the 3 you named that we can debate shouldn't have gotten in. But howard too 50 frfr
@@HondoHoss77 Yeah, and that's while having one of the worst diets known to man. If only he had actually tried...
Dwight is not above CP3. And CP3 doesn't belong with Dame and Melo, he is significantly better than those guys.
I love that JJ is giving Timmy his flowers. As a spurs fan, it’s refreshing to see people finally recognizing Timmy and giving him his flowers in recent years. Timmy is the 🐐 PF.
I thought it was common knowledge that Tim Duncan's the greatest power forward of all time. The reason they probably forget about him is because there's no one else in the conversation at PF
Kobe also deserved at least one maybe both of Steve’s MVPs. I agree Tim needed at least 1/2 more MVPs but voters had fatigue because spurs were one of the most consistent teams from 2000-2014 and I think that in itself undervalued Tim’s performance throughout his career.
@@angelcanez4426 No. he was under appreciated because at one point the spurs were considered “boring.” They won by playing great defense and slow basketball. It wasn’t until 2013 when coach pop opened up the offense and they started shooting lights out from the 3. Plus they played the heat so you had your LBJ haters and then spurs were the team to cheer on to stop LBJ. Spurs went from boring to a beautiful basketball.
@@Benvyious imo it’s because it was Kobe vs timmy. If you had a poll today who had the better career, most will vote Kobe just because they are biased. Fans want the more popular guy because by the numbers, Timmy’s career was wayyy better than Kobes. Only thing Kobe has over Kobe is that he repeated and Timmy never did. How can you consider Kobe’s career better against a guy who NEVER MISSED a playoff game in his career and made the spurs the winningest sports franchise during that stretch. It’s a popularity contest. Timmy finally got his flowers with the public when the spurs went against the heat. The offense opened up when they were deadly as a team from the 3 and their amazing passes. Remember back in 2013-2014, even their passes was ESPN highlights
Ya Timmy got lots of flowers and rings

I agree with Shaq's point of view, the players greatness and what they do individually should matter the most. We do this in every other sport except the NBA for some reason.
As a life long spurs fan, our guys have been smugged so often from several awards. Duncan absolutely deserved a dpoy award
I think coaches and/or executives should vote mvp. They’re literally the ones directly deciding value for their teams.
Love how Shaq always puts the respect on Kobe's name. These other Media people seem scared to name drop him now a days. Love JJ tho !
The link for the full episode is another episode not this one.
I'm always shocked that Dr. J does not get more respect all time. And, ham also shocked he is not discussed as the most influential player in NBA history. I don't think people realize the reverence other players had for him and the greats that came after him had. Like MJ, Nique, Vince etc. would not have dreamed like they did and played that way without Dr. J. He is a legend and was a very underrated player all time.
They vet the voters:
J.J. has a vote because he loves, "all-star-ball...
Shaquille O'Neal does not have a vote because he likes basketball...
MVP can be tricky. Sometimes the best player doesn’t have to do as much on a good team as opposed to a good player or a bad team. Their numbers will be better because they have to do more. You put that player on a good team, his numbers go down because there are decent players to share the load.
In the case of Wemby vs Gobert, it’s actually simple. Imagine having 3-4 defensive stars around you making your life immeasurably easier versus a guy out there playing 1v5. That second dude should not have better defensive stats, since it’s that much easier for the opposing team to avoid one single guy. Yet…Wemby was better and did it all himself.
@@danielpenrodii2389 hence me saying it can be tricky and SOMETIMES not all the times. Have to use critical thinking and be objective because not all situations and circumstances are the same.
Wemby is DPOY.. shaq just said it's an individual award. I agree.
rudy is the better defender wemby is block hungry he jumps everytime someone goes in the paint which is normal for a rookie or someone at the start of their nba career rudy is the more disciplined defender and the more skilled one for now at least
@@sxyli don't discredit the rookie bcoz he just got more blocks than rudy, how can you say he is a better defender yet wemby is better in all defensive stats than rudy? look at stocks and defensive rating when he's on the court.

Shaq forgets what his stance is halfway through expressing a thought
At some point the MVP stopped being the "Best Player in the League" award and became "Most Interesting Player in the League".
The MVP was never the best player. If it was, from 1970-2020, the only MVPs would have been Kareem, Magic, Bird, MJ, Hakeem, Shaq, Duncan and LeBron
It's the "who had the most impressive season" award. So the best player might not always have his best season.
It's never been the Best Player award. If it was LeBron would have 8 awards. It used to be the "Whoever is the best player on the best team" award. But I kind of see what you're saying in the sense that narrative seems even more important than it was
@@hardwoodthought1213 I think Malone still would have won it in 99.
@@MistyKathrine Nah. Duncan won a title and was even that season just marginally worse as a scorer (not saying career or anything just that season) whilst being the superior defender and passer.
Omfg I started dying laughing when Shaq brought Dwight up. I mean they both had great Magic careers. Shaq was good and more dominant but Dwight teams were good too
DPOY - Require a certain DRTG on/off requirement. Probably have similar - or related - requirements for other awards.
.
MVP - Like the playoffs requirement, great players should be able to their team past the play ins. Might also discourage tanking.
ALL NBA - Don't think it makes sense to have ALL NBA teams & then ALL NBA defensive centric teams.
Should just go by purely best offensive & defensive team awards. Allow for ALL NBA (all around team) to become a function of MVP standings.
When it comes to DPOY, yes you are disqualified if your team don’t make playoffs, especially if you lead the team in usage. Compared to the rest of the team, he’s technically most responsible with their lack of success year 1.
And if we are looking at numbers, all advanced defensive numbers has Gobert way ahead of Wemby, there’s no way around that.
Another thing people don’t talk about is offense for a defender, if you have a negative offensive rating, that should count against your net defensive contributions, in Wemby’s case, he’s a negative in OWS.
Former MVPs should get a vote on MVP
The keyword is value. Just because you're the best player doesn't mean you add value to a teams success. It may add value to the revenue of the team being box office, but that's irrespective of team success
For me it's much simpler than that..XD
Do you guys know that stat that shows + - for your team with you on the field vs without you on the field?
Some specific players are + 20 when they are in and - 10 when they are out..
If that's not value, what is?
I like the idea of former HOF and former players voting, but I think there needs to be some prerequisites first since the game changes so much over time. Everyone is prone to hyperbole, but a nice balance of former players/coaches/front office and media/analysts would be great to see. I wonder how the voting would look then.
By what criteria SGA is the baddest man in the league?
Basically, skin color lol. And this is coming from a non white person. I've noticed a bit of prejudice in a lot of nba media. The black Americans don't like players that play differently from the black American archetype
Shaq is a very weird Luka hater. When Luka hit that step back game winner in the playoffs vs the clippers in his second season Shaq literally said he was not impressed by Luka and that he seen that before oh and btw Luka dropped a 40pt triple double that game as well. It’s clear as day that Shaq hates Luka. Idk why though
Way more points than Jokic (32 v 26). Similar advanced stats (though much higher relative to position), clutch points, more game takeovers. Jokic is a great player, but don't say there is isn't a very strong argument for SGA.
@@occultsymbolsthis is just a blatant lie cos you’re emotional. I’m a Luka and Mavs fan and don’t see it like that. He doesn’t need to bow down and kiss Lukas feet everytime to prove to you that he likes him, he’s said he’s a great player multiple times and complimented him. Also outside of hoop Luka be hosting him in Slovenia
@@joshb.1118 way more isolation possessions than jokic. Why do ppl give iso scorers more credit than players who move the ball around to their teammates?
Here’s a fix: The NBA picks the criteria and send them to all voters (in writing) each year for them to follow.
Shaq should organize a Players' MVP next year
If team success doesnt matter then what does value even mean? What value does a player bring when their team is losing?
Players use to vote. They voted Kareem every year, even when he was missing the playoffs. What about the NFL top 100 list? It’s horrible every year, because players decide who is on it and in what order.
There is nothing inherent that means an NBA player knows more than anyone else. Shaq alone is proof of this. The man didn’t understand what a PnR was. He just claimed you need heart to win 😂he claimed in 2011 that Brook Lopez was better than Dwight Howard 😂 he claimed Tim Duncan was ‘soft’ in 1999 and didn’t deserve to be listed as better than him. Duncan then swept him in the playoffs 😂 he claims Barkley isn’t qualified to talk basketball because he never won a title 😂 he flip-flops on his picks for greatest of all time so much, it’s almost impossible to keep up 😂 he was given a book on Nietzsche by Phil Jackson. His takeaway from the book? Nietzsche was so crazy he was a genius, and that’s what Dr O’Neal was. A crazy genius….
That’s somehow better than someone from the media voting?
NFL Top 100 is great. The players give other positions credit and not just glaze QBs.
@@Matthew-xl5bc Last year, the top 31 had 5 RBs and only 4 QBs. In 2023?
Let’s say you argue well the list isn’t about value, it’s about best at a position. Why has Justin Tucker never even cracked the top 90 then?
YOU ARE WRONG...
KAREEM was the clear MVP because he had more wins than the others (at that time missing the play-offs didnt mean you werent a TOP TEAM) it was by divisons..wich means you could have 50 wins and not make the play-offs while a team with 40 wins could make the play-offs if they were the TOP team in their divison.
The rest you are correct..i cant trust someone voting who says ATLANTA is closer to the moon than CHICAGO just because he can see the moon from there and cant see CHICAGO...
BUT MEDIA also is BAD...RACHEL said i dont watch WESTBROOK play but i see his stats thats why i am voting for him.
AND you can go and check how many black voters put LUKA ahead of SGA...JUST 1..
THE rest only vote for black players at 1st place...some dont even put JOKIC on the TOP...
SOME MEDIA is clearly BIASED towards their TOWN and TEAM and if there is a TOP player from that TEAM they will always put him ahead.
THATS why you saw SGA last season finishing 5th in the MVP without making the play-offs with just 2 more wins than MAVS LUKA who didnt play LUKA to TANK in the last games .
LUKA had a lot more wins than losses.
SGA had more losses than WINS.
BUT media still goes for TEAM WINS instead of PLAYERS wins.
EMBIID got 43 wins last season...SIXERS got 54...
@@onlyfacts3178 Luka has Kyrie SGA has great players but all of them combined have less years in the league than Irving
Living players in the 75 Greatest should get a vote. They know how to be the best.
Agree with Shaq on this one
I think if you've made the HOF you should get a vote. I'd definitely like to see coaches, players and ex-players get a heavier vote (particularly if they aren't allowed to vote for their teammates). And I think the media should have the same voting ability as the fans, maybe even after the players choose the top 10 maybe.
Who are you valuable to? The team!
Love how Jj asks why Shaq mentions charlotte as Jj rumored for coach hire for them
Break votes into categories. Fans, players (active only), media etc. and add weighted value to each category.
Can you imagine Shaq having the ability to vote if he only responded to that email that was sent 15 years ago 😂
Shaq would probably vote Bol Bol for MVP. Awards will be even more ridiculous if you give every ex player a vote.
Shaq shaking his head at the beginning LMAO. Also I'm with Shaq on this... win/loss ratio shouldn't matter, at all. BUT! I'm from OKC and I LOVE Shai. Luka stilla gets the nod from me, he's absolutely insane. SGA in a few years or even next, is a lock.
Realistically the best player on the best team usually gets the finals mvp im with shaq on the part its a individual award
More ex players should be involved, but someone like Shaq has made it clear he doesn't even watch games much.
shaq more serious on here i like it
Shaq spitting flames
Current and former player (maybe) should vote. Media can do nominations.
It doesn't always happen but I 100% agree with Shaq's definition of MVP. Why should the most valuable player get more cred because their team lifts them up? The argument that the team with the better record HAS the better record because of that player is so subjective. Team sport. How do you quantify the individual contribution's to team success? That doesn't make sense.
Shaq speaking faxx about mvp
50 hofers 25 ex players 25 ex coaches and gmes? Maybe 25 of each? I think GMs and coaches offer great insight game-planning against certain guys.
2:20 *Looks at Mike Tout on the Angels*
DYOP is an individual award,MVP is an award based on your impact on your teams success
MVP - shaq is right !! It’s a singular player award !!
Players, former players, coaches, former coaches, and GMs should get the majority of the weighted votes for NBA awards.
The media's vote should be weighted like the fan vote in all-star.
LOL you remember when they tried this for all star and players mostly voted for themselves?
maybe the media could vote to whom is selected and then the cohort you mentioned could vote to decide akin to the oscars
but the media members are current with the game
Point is that Shaq is pulling for SGA cuz he afraid that people will start seeing Jokic as THE GOAT center after the 3 MVP .. you can tell he don’t watch games cuz the last 12-13 games SGA was injured/didn’t play for 7-8 games and the other 4-5 he played he wasn’t even the best player on his team.. either CHET or the peDo had better games and they got that nr-1 spot without him lol 😂
Current players. Like the old days. Simple.
Being respected by your peers is the greatest honor.
Except that when they did this for all star the players voted for themselves
Shaq will swear hes not sensitive one minute then have moments like 6:52 where he'll take it personally when someone disagrees with him
Shaq was about to kill that man if he said Dwight 😂😂😂 I think JJ knew it too 😂
He called them Earthlings lmao
HOFers voting is the worst idea. Case in point:
Shaq: You should qualify for MVP if you make the playoffs.
Also Shaq: Wemby should have gotten the DPOY.
Shaq will do everything in his power to vote against Rudy just because he doesn't like the dude, he doesn't respect his game, and he doesn't like that he got paid. A lot of HOFers internalize the competition they have with current players and cannot even attempt to vote objectively as acknowledging someone got more MVPs than they did might move that player ahead on the list of all time greats.
I always thought MVP should go to the player whose team would drop the most in the standings if he wasn’t able to play that season. By definition he would be the most valuable player
Luka not being MVP after monster season tells everything
You can’t leave important decisions to the guys that can barely read. I’m not joking either. A lot of these guys barely saw a college campus let alone class.
The reason i dont think only players should vote is because by voting for some players they might be making personal and biased decisions since they know the players currently playing
Come on JJ, Wembanyama is clearly the DPOY. His effect on the TEAM's defense when he's on the court is mind-boggling. Gobert has an easier job blocking shots, when the perimeter defenders actually put some pressure on the driving player. The highlights of people passing up easy looking shots out of fear of Victor should by itself the man is the single best defensive player in the league. He affects shots by just standing still. Other players have to actually do something.
they know JJ interviewing w charlotte
The thing with these awards is that if you STRICTLY define the criteria, you can determine every award with an algorithm, based on the defined metrics.
Arbitrariness leaves room for disagreements and preferences between voters, as well as room for narratives (which is one of the most important things in the entertainment of the sport).
So the chaotic system (arbitrary criteria) actually makes this more interesting. 😅
You talk about it like the point of the NBA isn't entertainment. The league benefits from the subjectivity of an award because it drives conversation
JJ: "interesting..."
Similar to Diddy circle, you're either in or you're out SHAQ. That's why I get to vote
Current head coaches, should be the voters for every award.
I think it should be a mix of head coaches, GM's and media.
MVP can't be separated from team performance or significance of contribution to the team. If you do then who are you valuable to?
Maybe just add an "rising star award" for role player who has made the leap into star player.
Jj reddish finna go coach charlotte you saw how he reacted when Shaq yelled that out
Dwight was with the magic 8 seasons, to shaqs 4. Dwight had better stats with the magic. Shaq has the better overall career. Dwight was considered an important part of the one chip he got. Shaq was considered the key part of the chips he got.
Back in the days, players were voted by their peers-aka the people that played against them.
I mean Shaq should start with actually watching the gamess before asking for a vote..
It's an individual award, but it's supposed to be most valuable. How much value are you adding to a team or the league if the team ends up a 7 seed?
Reminds me that Steph Curry came in 3rd for MVP Voting in 2021 even though he didn't even make the playoffs. The idea that he deserved more votes than someone like Chris Paul that year was ridiculous.
If you're the best player in the league, your team should be making the playoffs outside of some crazy injuries. A great player in a team game helps their team win and leads that team. Your team wins because you're the best player.
I completely agree with everything Shaq said... how can people who have never stepped foot onto an NBA court on a team and not as a media personality be allowed to vote for awards that changes ppls lives... it should only be ex players and hof'ers ik it gets into the blurry line where theyre voting for players on teams theyve played for before. But i trust that so much more than RANDOMS ON TV WHO I HAVE NEVER SEEN DO ANYTHING on the court ever in their lives....
Maybe if you watched some fucking games Shaq you might get a vote
Should’ve said to Shaq that Ernie doesn’t get a vote? And he would’ve shut up really quick.
That’s true, Shaq doesn’t have a lot of sense, but he’s got enough to not diss Ernie
“Ur tge best big man in orlando majic history” ??? Shaq was best big man period!
MVP - An individual AWARD it isn't MVPLAYERS!
MVP should have zero to do with the team. It’s an individual award.
