It would be nice to have a series eval guesser where you pick positions and try to guess the eval bar
Nice Idea
Agreed; great idea!
Its a nice idea. But unlike guess the elo, there is more variability in "guess the eval bar" since the "correct" answer depends on the chess engine, the evaluation method (classical vs NNUE), search depth and the hardware being used.
Why not always show the Eval bar?
@@rohansonkusare7025 not to mention the completely ridiculous sacrifices and moves the engine can find. Some completely lost looking position might have 1 brilliant 17 move line that shifts the eval.
In response to the people saying he talks too much, Levy’s next recap should be him just clicking through all of the moves with no explanation
I would wanna see that. Maybe only talk with monotonous voice "And game between x and y starts", then say nothing whole game and "next game is x vs y" and again nothing. He can play the crows and cricket sounds in the background as well.

He did hit 2900! It happened briefly during The World Rapid/Blitz Chess Championships, although he didn’t quite end the tournaments off above 2900.

For Carlsen to have a realistic chance to get to 2900 there need to be more 2800s first. And not only 1 or 2 but something like the entire top 10 or even top 20. If Magnus keeps his win rate of 40% and 60% draws for the next 3 games then he will get out of this tournament with ~+1. At this pace he'd need 34 tournaments going as well as this to get to 2900. If he wins 2 games then it will be more like +6. Carlsen might have a better chance farming 2500s keeping a >90% win rate and no losses for the next 5 years or so.
Not to mention he needs the entire top 10 to always go for sicilian or something that enables both sides to play for the win. If he just meets someone who will play only Ruy Lopez into a fast draw, its pretty much bye bye 2900. Its unfortunately how it goes when you are this far ahead of everyone AND draw is so "easy".
@@Dark_Voice Yep. And on top of that, basically everybody who ever had a rating of >2800 and could potentially try to get to 2900 to make this "oh lets just draw"-scenario unlikely is now relatively far away - except Firouzja and Ding Liren and even they are 60+ points away. Caruana will likely drop a lot of rating - he still has to play Magnus and a draw there would not be the worst for him, but to get out of the tournament +/-0 he will need to beat Mamedyarov and Praggnanandhaa.
The next big tournament is the GP event in Berlin and the only player there with a realistic chance to make it to 2800 is Ding Liren. Everybody else would need to basically win every game if I did my math correctly. So I guess its very unlikely that during 2022 there will be much competition for the quest to 2900.
That's why Hikaru said that reaching 2900 would be nearly impossible. Not because Magnus is not good enough, but it's just the reality that elo inflation has not reached there yet.
"Stop talking to me during the game" is probably levys most iconic joke
word man
No. It's not.

Us: We want Magnus!
Levi: We have Magnus at home
Magnoos at home: Mango...?
@@bhargavabhat9227 vidit-prag game commentary by Levi, he
intentionally mispronounced Magnus' name as a joke
I liked it when Magnus was checkmating everyone with the Sveshnikov. It he wants 2900 he'll have to figure out a way to try and win with both colors like Kasparov and Fischer. Note that he's smashing thr tournament with +4 and he's gone from 2865 to 2866 on the live list. A tough road is ahead or him. The only good news is he's left at least a full point on the table to improve upon.
Its a lot harder to win with black in the modern era than it was during Fischer's or Kasparov's era.
Modern players are way too solid which makes it incredibly difficult. If your opponent doesnt want to play for a win and they want to play for a draw, but they have the white pieces, there really is not much you can do to take the advantage and win. A draw is pretty much the best Black can hope for when White is playing for a draw in the hands of a super GM.
Like, maybe Black can play some crazy sharp line with the Sicilian or something, but its very difficult to win in that situation. Its very easy for White to draw when white is playing only for a draw and not for a win.
Kasparov's opponents wasnt aware of any berlin draws , its like saying magnus has to play like tal , against you or 2400 , he can , against 2700 , tal would get smashed
I understand what both of you are saying. But essentially you guys are claiming 2900 to be impossible. I'm not a very strong player at 22xx fide, but when I play 21xxs i try to win every game as black. Why? Because I don't want to stay 22xx. Remember, Carlsen is 2866 and Karjakin is 2747. On k-10. There's a MASSIVE skill difference. The difference between Carlsen and Karjakin is about the same difference between a GM and an IM that's an uncontroversial claim.
@@julianproleiko1544 How the hell do you not understand that there's a huge difference playing for a win as Black against a Super GM playing for a draw than it is playing for a win as Black against some 21xxs trying to draw. Congrats to you for doing that and trying to improve as best you can, but your situation is hardly the same considering you have nothing to lose and Carlsen has far more to lose.
@@julianproleiko1544 Im not claiming its impossible to get to 2900 at all. i do think its possible, its just insanely difficult.
But its still a fact that at Super GM level play, when a Super GM plays for a draw with the white pieces, its VERY VERY difficult to force a situation where you have winning chances. Obviously you CAN still win, but its not easy at all. Usually black only wins when white is also playing for a win.
Magnus can definitely win with the black pieces, but its a lot more difficult when a 2700+ player is playing for a draw right off the bat with the white pieces. Not impossible to win no, but VERY difficult.
Lets put it this way, Super GMs can draw engines with the white pieces by playing for a draw. Thats how difficult it is to actually win as black in that situation. Even 3300+ Engines struggle to beat Humans when a Super GM is using the white pieces and intentionally trying to draw.
Obviously its not impossible though, you can sometimes force positions where you have winning chances as black, but what youre capable of doing is very limited. There are only a handful of openings black can play that somewhat forces sharper variations, mainly the Sicilian.
I have never thought to ask, “Does the winner of major tournaments get any bonus points for winning?” Clearly the answer seems to be no but imagine if you earned 2-5 points per major.
It wouldn't make that much of a difference
The elo inflation tho
it doesn't look like a big change but it is legit something that changes chess in its entirety.
@@AKhoja it would be a way easier path to 2900 for magnus
Probably you should get a few extra points for winning a tournament. Maybe as much as 10 for the World Championship in Classical, Rapid, or Blitz
Like in Blitz, it seems odd that MVL is reigning World champion ( congratulations on this ) but yet ranked #4, and a full *37* points behind #1 Nakamura

Just to be clear, Levy does NOT talk to much. His content has an amazingly high quality to it everyday…
Great video upload timing cus i watched ur previous recap and suddenly theres a new video out from u
This was a great recap Levy. I enjoyed the more detailed analysis for these games despite the video being long. Hope to see this become more common in your videos
That 13 move drawing sequence was crazy. Could a human have found that? Then again, Alekhine did famously find a 12 move combination to win a knight once. It would be cool to get a video with longest combinations and forcing sequences ever that actually happened in games. Like if you agree!
No one below 2700 has the right to criticise Magnus about anything he does to do with chess. He is the strongest player the world has ever known and some loud-mouthed Twitter shmucks decided that Magnus shouldn’t have played a certain opening. THEY KNOW WHO HE’S PLAYING RIGHT? Especially in round 10, he’s playing the man dubbed the minister of defence- the man who almost pried the world championship from Magnus. I wonder why he wanted a draw. And before you come at my throat as to why he isn’t going for draws against the other gms, well I don’t know. And no one will until someone asks the man.
I love how the savagery of the flame wars in the chess world are every bit as subtle and impenetrable as the savagery on the board.
What an endurance contest in Round 10! Nils and Pragg in 60+ move games! Nice wins by Richard R. and Andrey. Sergey and Magnus - not sure there is anything positive to say about either's role in a 15 move draw. Hopefully, we'll see the best of each player in the rounds to come. Great recap of these marathon matches! Thanks!

Hey Gotham I´m a big fan of you and a subscriber. I started playing and learning chess about 1 year ago but I have no learning plan or schedule. Could you please make a video about how you learned chess from the beginning? Like what were your steps, did you enter a chessclub from the beginning and what did you learn in witch order and how many hours each day did you invest? It would be a good orientation for beginners like me, to know how you have to learn, to become a master one day. Also it would be interesting to know how much time you invested in learning and how much in playing.

Lichess: This position has been played 82 times and even the position on move 13 has been played 32 times!
This exact position has never been seen before IN THIS MOVE ORDER :) - Levy
Probably referring to actual Master Games, cause he uses Chessbase. You’re probably looking at Lichess’ database of games, instead of the Master section below it,
Carlsen’s game today was riveting.
The "I can't let you get close" had me rolling. I thought it before you said it and when you mentioned it I realised why I love you so much. Hardcore MMA fan here. Love you Levy
I used to watch MMA fights back when Chael Sonnen was in contention for the UFC middleweight title.
What's kinda funny to me now is that the letters in my Pokemon Unite trainer code ended up being "MMAFN". It's a bit late to the party, but sure, having it randomly say "MMA fan" is pretty darn hilarious.
I like that levy says machine instead of the engine, just like Svidler today!
You should do a series where you have to play from a losing position. You can title it "Creating Counter-play" or something. In the low elo games you can just hang a piece for free, and then later maybe a piece for a pawn, then maybe a rook for a knight or bishop. and in the high elo games maybe just get into a bad position but one that still has life in it. You could just make custom games and start the game from the losing position. Anyway I just think it would be pretty informative and it plainly sounds like good content.
(I've commented this 27 times and I'll continue to do so until either Levy responds, or I see the series. Or maybe I'll give up who knows?)
I agree ….also dm him an tweet this to him also to better the chances bc that’s a !! Brilliant idea
Pragg was great 👏 He made Vidit leaving the table really upset:)
An adiotional explanation by Danya was giving that at 16:05 it's not just that Ng6 wins the pawn because of the double attack on the e5 pawn. It's also that after the played Ng6 1. Re6 Kf7 the King removes the rook from the e file and thereby dropping the pawn on e5.
C’est super que tu essais d’apprendre le francais! J’ai appris une partit de l’anglais grace a tes vidéos et j’adore ton contenue .
Man I can't keep up with all this content. You are the GOAT
I think Sergey is just trolling magnus for a bit of fun, I don't think he's being serious
after his comments towards Dubov i think he is just salty af. It's passive aggressive move
It’s also possible that Magnus saying he won’t defend his title if Firouzja or one of the new generations of players doesn’t win the next candidates has irked some of the players. If I were Caruana I’d be a bit peeved after hearing that.
@@cygnus_XI fair point, but at the same time, both him and caruana had their chance and blew it, also playing a forced draw line with white doesn't isn't the best way to show that you're a worthy challenger. I do still think (and hope) it's nothing more than just a bit of fun
He's just a salty Russian taking shots at the champ because it's the only way he can get one up over Magnus
@@salahsaadsalah7509 I just can’t really agree necessarily. If one of the older players wins the next candidates and Magnus declines to play them because he wanted Alireza to win, it’s very disrespectful. I’m sure preparing for the matches are very time consuming and stressful and perhaps he’s no longer interested in it, but it’s sort of one of the responsibilities Magnus takes on when becoming the world champion.
I’m not saying it’s right to intentionally play for a draw against Magnus either. Maybe it’s just tongue-in-cheek fun by Sergey as you said, and not meant to be mean. But what I noticed is that the chess fan community in general seems to be condoning or overlooking Magnus’ extremely rude comment. Why that is, I’ll leave to your imagination! ;)
Appreciate the bad guy reference from another fellow mma fan 👊
