Ok so h4 is a bad opening move according to standard theory but how to actually punish it? All these genius chess commenters are like hurr durr can't do that. Can we have like a bunch off engine matches with h4 as a starting move and see what happens? How does it get exploited? What adavantage does black get besides the tempo?
There’s no a3 or h3 to challenge a potential pin like in the rut Lopez for example if the pawn is already to h4 there’s only one pawn to control b4.
I personally don’t think it’s “weakening” unless your opponent knows to try and get a piece planted there
I don’t think it’s very bad, it’s like playing as black but you have an extra move and you decide to go h4 for your extra move
You're talking about punishing it like it's a tactical sequence though. You can't argue with the fact that it's objectively one of the worst moves on the board at that time. It doesn't free up any pieces immediately, unlike e4/d4; castling queenside is well-known to be riskier than kingside, but this move immediately weakens your kingside and pretty much prevents you from ever kicking pieces off g4;. and it only controls a single square on the board, when your objective in the opening should be to control as many as possible.
It forces you into very specific gameplans: not necessarily a bad thing if you're the greatest player that ever lived and trying to get away from other people's prep, but generally not advised.
An engine will probably ignore it, take the center, develop faster since h4 does nothing development-wise unless you can somehow manufacture a very weird rook lift or break open that side, and most likely have it in a bind within 30 moves.
Incidentally, Stockfish considers h4 to be -0.44 at depth 30. So of course it's not losing immediately, but giving up an advantage like that so early on can very quickly snowball. Basically, everything Levy says at 1:15.
@@leerobbo92 H4 allows you to do a Rook lift.
@@komaddog ... "develop faster since h4 does nothing development-wise unless you can somehow manufacture a very weird rook lift..."
It still doesn't free it up immediately anyway. Rook on the 3rd rank's usually a terrible idea in the opening, since the bishops point that way by default.

"It's 90 degrees here in New York, not celcius but fahrenheit. We use this silly system here."- Levy Rozman, 2022, spitting facts
Learn the origins of the Fahrenheit system and you will realize it is not as silly as people think.
Farenheit isn't silly at all. Yeah it's easy to say "Oh 0 is freezing and 100 is boiling for water, that's easy" and that's true, but farenheit is objectively 1.8x more precise than celcius and people don't really care about water temperature anywhere near as much as air temperature. When was the last time you used a thermometer to measure water temperature. It's easier to get a good feel for the air temperature using farenheit v. celcius.
@@Eggy79 You do realize it's literally impossible for a measurement to be "more precise," right? Anyone with an inkling of science knowledge will just laugh at your statement and move on.
@@GaussianEntity um that's incorrect. You realize we're talking about a scale right? The difference between each degree is smaller in Farenheit than in Celcius. You're telling me if I invented a scale that was 0-3 with 0 being the freezing point and 3 the boiling point, that it's not less precise? You make zero sense
@@GaussianEntity i mean you're technically correct if we're forced to use decimals and fractions but that just supports the idea that farenheit is a superior system to use for air temperature. "Oh it's 1.374748484 degrees out" using my 0-3 scale would be as precise as saying "50 degrees celcius" or whatever but useless. It's the same argument as to why Farenheit is better than celcius
ive played this a6 structure after learning the karo kahn repertoire from Levy, I saw a6 in the sidelines and open variations being used and thought that it was important to play a6 to prevent bishop b5+ or Kb5 when i want to rip open the position
I hope you mean Nb5, it would be quite the set of moves that led to your king on b5 from the opening

3:54 Why did Wei Yi recapture with his pawn and damage his king side pawn structure? Wouldn't capturing with bishop prevent it and also activate his bishop at the same time? I'm confused, Levy
I think because of the move Na5, taking advantage of the pin on the R which is no longer protected by a B on d1.

Love how you are showing off your guns, Levy. Reminds me that I need to pick up some toothpicks at the store...
I really enjoyed the how to win at chess series, I used to always watch the whole hour and a half. Would you consider bringing those back? I'm around 1350 rapid, and really learned a lot from the games you played against 1100-1600 people
He does win at chess all the time. He released one 1 or 2 months ago. They're about half as frequent as gte episodes but he does them. But they're longer and harder to make so that's why he doesn't do them ALL the time
Im not a high rated player, but A6 in caro kann… I’m kind’a surprised that you are saying that you haven’t seen it before… I use it regularly in the beginning to keep off the white bishop going to B5, after the pawns in the middle gets traded or something like that 👀
P.s when are you playing tournaments again? Love the recaps and following your journey in the chess world🤘👀🤘 A fan from Greenland
But that bishop there isn't even a big deal tbh. As long as you don't let them pressure the pinned knight, which is usually easy, a6 is just a waste. A6 to kick it out later maybe but not to stop it from coming to b5
That's my favourite opening: Young elo
8:35 an important detail is that your king escapes the checks by hiding in the h file, behing the black king and pawn. Basically he needed vertical defense with the rook, so his king can clock out and go home.
The first game was like Magnus was sick of being white, so he decided to make a random move first turn
Ngl good predict on the celcius to Fahrenheit conversion
isn't h4 one of the moves used by the alfazero games

To be honest as far as weather goes I think Fahrenheit is superior. 0 is about the coldest weather generally gets and 100 is about the hottest it ever gets. Around 65 is room temperature, which makes sense as a pretty 'average' temperature.
I mean if you're cooking or doing anything science or engineering related then yeah celsius is superior. But for weather Fahrenheit gives a nicer scale.

15:35 If Rxb2 there is Qc1+ mate in 2...
or Qf1# mate in 1
last night I was literally talking with family about how opening with H4 has never been done at high level because it does nothing and gives away advantage.
AND HERE MAGNUS GOES
Actually, Farenheit is a more precise way to measure temperature, and much better in utility for air temperature
Props to Wei Yi though, I watched this live as it was being streamed and I thought he was dead 16 moves near the end-game just to watch this guy SQUEEEZE water out of stone with less than a minute on the clock setting up traps and tricky positions forcing Magnus to go from a 5+ minute advange to basically no time advantage and force a draw.
8:13 what happens if he checks the king again after that? How do you win there?

Real men measure in Kelvin. Celsius doesn't start at zero which makes it not very good scientifically.
levys been working out. Salute. three tips lev. 1) stay in calorie surplus. 2) do reps. volume. near failure. like go until you cant and then squeeze a few more. high weight is fine sometimes. 3) mind muscle connection. dont be afraid to focus and flex in the mirror.
15:30 if rxb2 there is qc1 mate 😂
15:30 in Rb2 then its Qc1 mate
15:33, if Rook takes b2, there's Qc1 which leads to a checkmate.

Levy: What do gms do when they don't know what to do? h4!
Magnus: 1. h4

22:45: "Not me,not you"😂
3:55 Pawn takes looks like a blunder to me. His bishop is dead on D8 and BxF6 would at least give him a bit of wiggle room for the Bishop and not damage the pawn structure. I'm seeing maybe some Rd7, a5 action, but I don't know (genuinely, don't know btw, I'm a 650) if that would be appropriate compensation for opening up his king to attacks. What do you guys think?
Ok so when black takes with the pawn, white is up by 1.35ish but if black takes with the bishop, white's up by 2.35ish. So I guess I'm wrong, I just don't see it
if Rb2 then Qc1 with backrank mate 15:36
I see Mangoose Carlton, I click
Magsus
When u see ding play this make u fell knight evaluate is 9 not 3
15:35 there's also mate
ok so obviously i'm not a grandmaster or anything like that, but at 6:32 couldn't magnus have played Rf5+ and then Re5 to block the rook from the pawn to secure the win? is there something i'm missing there?
I think after Re5 there's check and the rook goes to e8 and it's a draw cause by the time white eliminates the rook the h pawn goes
Rf5 check and black king goes to g6. Re5 and black rook takes with check. Now black king goes to g7 and white cant promote his pawn, if he lets black push the pawn then black would win. This is a draw
At 15:35 gotham missed a checkmate? If rook b2 queen c1 even queen f1 wins on the spot.
I was stunned Giri did not manage to draw that last game though...
15:34 LEVY MISSED MATE IN 1!!!!!!!!!!!
That was a badass tactic by Shak.
The funny thing is Fahrenheit makes more sense to humans than Celsius. It's scale is in reference 0-100 to the comfort of humans. If you want an absolute scale - use Kelvin.
Can't wait for Hikaru to play Jobava London
ºF weird measures.. sure. But also please mention the ºC too.
