Hey Levy, this is actually the first time that I've ever commented on a youtube video, so i don't know if you'll even see this, but I wanted to say that recently I've been going through a difficult patch with my basketball, which is what I love the way you seem to love chess. No matter how many hours I spend training, or watching videos or learning sequences when push comes to shove on the court, none of it seems to matter because I just find myself empty. Basketball is my childhood dream, but it feels like it's slipping away a little more every day. I used to play a lot of chess when I was little, but I lost touch with it as I grew up. Over the past couple of months, one of the only things that let me feel like I'm not being suffocated by falling short, is watching your videos and playing chess. I don't know how many times I've watched "CRUSH The Queen's Gambit in 6 Moves: THE ALBIN", and it took me five minutes to recover from laughing over your 200 ELO game review. The hardest part about basketball is feeling like i just lose all the time. Watching your videos and playing chess, feels like the only place i can win right now. Even if that's a single blitz game against an 800, when the only thing you know is loss, a win, of any description, no matter how big, is everything, and you gave me a win Levy. I don't know if that is the most cringe thing you've ever read or what, but I just wanted you to know that. Even if you lost every over the board competitive match for the rest of your career, I will never be able to thank you enough for helping me through this time in my life the way you have. That being said, i do hope that someday i will get to thank you in person, for what i can only describe as being a friend. Take care of yourself my friend, and if you're ever down under, there's a room for you under my roof. Cheers, Jack

Hello Levi, I know this feeling absolutely! I have also a similar situation with playing the guitar on stage; Many people got really high expectations when they hear me play because I got elected for a "special class for music" out of a hella lot of competitors. This putted so much pressure on me, that I completely froze infront of the audience --} I think it's the same for you. At home or when I play background music for other people everything works perfectly and I feel free (like you, when you are streaming) For me it helped talking with other people about my handycap and changing the mindset, so I can (especially before concerts) relax my mind. I hope I could give you a better feeling, that you are not alone with those problems. Liebe Grüsse, Samuel✌️

    • @nasty_slapper
      @nasty_slapper Před 2 lety +2

Hey buddy, this post stuck out to me because I've been through exactly the same thing. But I thought I'd mention a couple things here that I learned and might be helpful to you or anyone else with such circumstances!
As a guitarist and a naturally somewhat "neurotic" personality type, I had the same problem as you. At practice, I could play pretty well and I'd love to let it go and "show off". But before each gig I would get so nervous that I often couldn't sleep the night before. Usually I'd just bear down and hope for the best, and somehow get through the night with the help of a couple pitchers of beer! But one night, something happened to me that really had a lasting effect. We reached the part of the night where the guitar player (me) would do an extended solo. (This wasn't really a typical thing to do at the time, but in some ways we were still stuck in the 80s, LOL.) Anyhow, I'm in the middle of a solo section and spotlighted in front of a few hundred people (and scores of people standing or dancing right in front of us) and the worst possible thing that could happen, did happen. All of a sudden, my hands cramped up terribly; so much so that I could hardly play anything. In fact, playing nothing would have been better than doing what I did, which was to play very badly and loudly. In addition, it hurt so bad that I literally went to my knees and let out a painful, screeching howl. To my shock, I looked up to see a bunch of people jumping up and down, yelling and applauding. They loved it; perhaps they thought it was part of the act. Anyway, I soon recovered and went on to finish out the night in a great mood, and perhaps one of my best nights onstage ever.
By being forced to realize that sometimes even when the worst possible thing can happen, you can still come out OK or even on top, I learned that even the anxiety that you have inside you is a form of energy that doesn't have to be bad; it can also be turned into positive energy. :)

Each new serve I practiced the week before felt unusable, I was missing shots that were completely free and just felt horrible each match. It even got to the point where I couldn't even get a single forehand to land on the table.

Hey Levy. I want to tell you that after tearing my ACL I've dived into chess deeply; sure I played before that but I've been subscribed to your channel since Fried Liver Attack video. I watch everything: guess the ELO, climb the ladder and others. Your channel is pure awesomeness: as much it is entertaining it is so educational that I want to come back and rewatch; you pour soo much knowledge in these! And...
...I feel the same way! No matter how much I know; during the game it is a complete different story. And it sucks! I then analyse the game and like "HOW COME I DIDN'T SEE THAT!". Anyway, that's not the point. The point is that I think I know what the problem could be. And it is about that Mamba Mentality! You told you watch NBA; I have been rooting for Suns since they went 8-0 in a bubble a few years ago. They were an amazing team, but in playoffs they shrank! Twice! It was upsetting to me. I like how Devin plays, CP3 is a great player too! Then I watched a video in Jimmy's channel; it is called When Trash Talking Goes Horribly Wrong (JxmyHighroller).
He talks about performancing under pressure; the mentality - when Devin was doubled team in practice he got frustrated. I see myself in this situation: I don't want to play a strong opponent because I am going to be buldozed (as you say). I care about winning and care about my rating more than I should; and afraid of a loss more than I should be as well.
I've also noticed that finding and making balanced choices is an absolutely essential trait; it is way easier to tilt and roll towards one side or the other. Maybe, just maybe, you are too respectful of your opponents that block you from challenging them with your full potential? I know you speak russian; I remember I read a book with aphorisms and found one that clicked for some reason: ученик не превзойдёт учителя, если будет видеть в нём образец, а не соперника. Based on your attitude in this video, I've noticed that you almost worship Eric whereas when you play subscribers you see them as BOZOs! Of course, you shouldn't go too far. That's why I talk about the balance here. Maybe next time you can say to Eric: I respect you, and it has been a great time, but you know what? I am about to destroy you this time [evil laugh]!
I might be totally wrong; I haven't solved my problems with this advice; but it doesn't hurt to try (actually it might, but it's fine, I guess). Of course, you still should speak to a sports therapist. Maybe even share some of my ideas with one; will be awesome if this comment reaches you and you'll find it helpful!
Good luck and keep doing what you are doing! Your channel is beyond amazing!

2 things: inconsistency (a known issue) and how to make a plan when your opponent stops everything? The latter is a huge issue in master games, even in Karpov v Kasparov.

This was an important experience, no doubt. You see more clearly the way to speed up your progress in improving your world-class skills.
I’m perhaps doing nothing more than projecting here but I spent years working on my mental wellness and conditioning. It took quite a long time for me to see that my dad, the person who loves and cares about me more than literally anyone, had been unintentionally abusing me psychologically. I couldn’t see it until recently but my dad is tragically insecure. The way he learned to cope with that insecurity is by minimizing any strengths he sees in others.
He has no idea that he does this and would NEVER knowingly do it. He treats people he doesn’t know with genuine care…I’ve seen it my whole life. With his loved ones, he’ll sacrifice anything. This made the abuse nearly impossible to identify. To have the person who cares most about me make me feel like I’m not enough…that the things I do are not enough…it created some maladaptive core beliefs.
When I finally, after years of work, was able to understand what happened in my family-of-origin, things immediately improved for me in important ways.
I see myself in you. Likely this is because of the fact that I look up to you combined with straight up projection.
Whatever the case, you’re clued into the fact that psychological stuff to sort and that’s everything. You can’t fix what you don’t acknowledge.
You’re ready. Take some time to do it right. Shop around as needed and find you a good ass therapist player. You got the mental wherewithal to work therapy successfully. Not everyone does. I see your determination to be real af with yourself- in therapy that’s 85% of the game.

Keep your head up mate. You'll be fine. I know you can do it.
From your account it seems like you're feeling symptoms of nervousness. It's not a big deal to forget your opening when you're nervous.
People forget how to speak when they're nervous, ever had that happen?
It's common, dont' be so hard on yourself.
It takes some getting used to, but after you do, you'll be able to think under pressure.
I know you can do it man.
    Cheers.

Levy, you were born (or at some point in your childhood, instilled) with an intense competitiveness. This is honestly one of the hardest things to deal with as “first-world-problem” as it sounds. But people with that competitiveness have a choice. Either give up for fear of failure or keep pushing to get even better. I commend you for pushing this hard and this far in your life to become incredibly skilled at something you’re passionate about. Myself and many others with this same competitiveness don’t have the balls that you have had to keep pushing through that pain of defeat. That’s what makes you different from us. Don’t give up man. Losing is never going to be easy, especially in big coverage events like this. But if you keep at it I’m 100% certain you’ll obtain GM status someday and go down in history as another one of the greats.

Hi there, I like your openness and honesty.
So, I'm not a professional, but from past experiences I have good results handling pressure by practicing physical exercises which strengthen the connection between the lobes in the brain.
The results are fast and outstandingly good. It helps a lot of children with math tests pressure etc. Which makes them 'frozen' as you described. Perhaps you can explore those technics which takes only few minutes in a day to practice.

Damn, can really relate with chocking under pressure. I think the problem is when you're nervous you start spending most of your mental energy on thoughts unrelated to the game. I think the trick is to just become accustomed to it, do it so much that you don't care anymore.
