In this video, I play against IM Levy Rozman (Gotham Chess) in Samay Raina's fascinating new variant: Poison Pawn Chess. Here are the rules...
-Before the game we each secretly select a single non-center pawn to be our poisoned pawn.
-If a player's poisoned pawn is captured at any point, that player wins -- but with one exception: If a player uses their poisoned pawn to capture the opponent's poisoned pawn, then it is considered a win.
- In our first game we played, poisoned pawns are not allowed to capture pieces. In the subsequent two games, poison pawns are allowed to make captures.
While the rules seemed a bit confusing at first, we quickly on the hang of it and had some epic battles...

Hard to say which of the two variants I like better. The poisoned pawn not being able to capture could lead to some really fun bluffs, but also gives a lot of information away.
Love the variant though, it was very tense. Your move with that C pawn was amazing and I'm surprised Levy picked up on it.
@@chelseaoverton1139 true,, although i think the version where poisoned pawns can't take is flawed since the game can't be won via a poisoned pawn taking the other poisoned pawn if both players choose the same pawn
Wasn't the rule in the 2nd game that the poisoned pawn can't capture anything besides the opponent's poison? So that number 17 move taking the bishop, shows it's not poisoned...
@@MusicPlaylistsChannel Samay changed the rules so that the poisoned pawn could capture.

This should really be a variant on the major chess sites.
33:08 was a brilliant move, Eric guessed right that the c pawn was Levy poison pawn and the only reason for Levy to not take this pawn was if the c pawn was Levy's poison pawn. Eric could know almost for sure the c pawn is Levy's poison pawn but Levy couldn't know if eric fake it. Impressive stuff!
yeah absolutely ,,,and i think what samay said about queen taking the bishop was even more crazy yet wonderful ,,, eric would never have taken that queen
I agree that it was smart by Eric, but wasn't it actually a bad move? if Levy had captured with the queen (which would have been the logical continuation after he figured out Eric's plan) Eric would have been unable to re-capture with his pawn, so he would have just lost a bishop...
@@dominiks5068 yeah exactly what I was thinking. I think Eric forgot the rule that if poisoned pawn captures poisoned pawn, it's over, because it's a really dumb move otherwise.
@@dominiks5068 That's what I thought too. Guess it was kind of a gamble for both Eric and Levy.
@@dominiks5068 This whole variant is about taking risks, Qxd6 even that it was good if you know Eric's poison pawn is very risky because Eric's move didn't say for sure that the c pawn is poison but it made Levy to show if it was is poison pawn almost for sure.

@@musickaraoke7853 Samay clarifying that the variant allows poison pawns to actually capture pieces to chat due to the chat being confused. Eric had just taken Levy's E pawn with his own F (poisoned) pawn. poisoned pawn wins it for me ,, since it is a new variant people have not used it effectively to bluff ,,, for ex advancing multiple pawns and keep them guessing ,, however out of all the poisoned pawn games that i have seen eric vs levy was th ebest ,,, what a great move by eric to take the pawn on d6

That little “ahaha” that Eric makes sometimes can be so terrifying
This is actually Among Us: Sheriff mod - Chess edition
Levy's attempt to walk back his admission that his poison pawn was the C pawn was hilarious.
"Hold on." - beautiful!
If poisoned pawns cant capture, but poison takes poison wins, then no one wins by poison poison capture
This is an amazing variation. It adds so much to the game, levels out more for new players. I'm going to try this irl by painting a skull or putting a sticker under two pawns and showing this to a friend. Thanks for sharing it guys.
I had never thought that a guy like samay will create a interesting varient of chess like this😅
I think a good strategy for this variant at some point in the middlegame is to just push the poisoned pawn as far as possible (especially if you can stop it from getting locked). Imagine getting a pawn to the 6th or 7th rank without any responsibility to defend it, and the opponent must blockade it to prevent it from promoting.
Also I prefer the variant where poisoned pawns cant capture - because it makes it possible to get information without putting the entire game on the line (for instance, if you think one of the pawns is poisoned, you can try moving a minor piece in front of it to see if it will capture)
This is way more poker-y than choker. Cause you never know if the opponent is bluffing with his pawns or what. Really loved it.
Can't wait for this to be on lichess
I am digging these colabs... Keep it up.
Can we maybe get some colab bughouse at some point?

This was really good, I like the new rules.
I'm so excited for this. This is super exciting.
The whole time Im thinking the best first move in the second variant is moving the poison pawn 2 spaces and keep moving it down the board taking pieces
It will become very ovious and You can block by any other piece,
And play normal game ,
the best case is opponent can't guess ur poision pawn ,
This is the buff pawns need in the next patch.
i really hope they add this as a variant one day
25:00 Levy: "Oh no, my Queen"

"Oh wait pawns capture diagonally"
Eric Rosen, International Grandmaster
eric's play in the last match where he kept bating Gotham to take his minor pieces because he knew he would be afraid to because a recapture would win him the game was brilliant.
You should try with the rule that the poison pawn can capture pawns but not pieces.
This was so exciting to watch
I came up with poison square not allowed to go to a particular square for the
whole game fro both sides randomly generated loose your chess piece if it currently occupied at the start.

Levy: Your C pawn is poisoned, Eric
Also Levy: Takes the C pawn
This explains alot... I checked Levy's games from archive the other day and they looked like some sort of sorcery. Apparently found these games :D
This is literally "You activated my trap card" the game.
i literally just understood the game in the last minute of the video LITERALLY, now i will have to watch all over again, everything makes sense nowww
6:44 "I'm trying to think like me too" lol, Eric is sneakily the funniest chess personality
I like inventing new types of chess. I have done quite a few, and I am always looking for new ideas on foruns or other creators (One example, V.R. Parton, for those who are interested)
My honest opinion, I thought the poisoned pawn is too strong. He can take over the board singlehandly and there is not much of a counterplay. My suggestion would be to make, whenever a piece captures the poisoned pawn, both automatically disappear. You are only losing one piece, at tops, not the entire game
And if a pawn capture the posion pawn?
How about make it like in atomic chess? So it will destroyed enemy pieces, pawns, and king near it if It get captured, that way you still need to be careful when you're capturing a pawn
@@fos1451 that is a way of balancing. Could work
Maybe next time the poison doesn't kill but paralyzes the opponent... meaning if consumed.... opponent gets to make your next move ... so you still have hope😂😂
33:23 "oh, pawns capture diagonally" made my day
