An underrated factor in ELO guessing is when a player chooses to resign. 900s don't like to resign if there are pieces on the board.

I've never seen Levy so disappointed in his life lol
As a 1400 myself I was shocked how low they both guessed. People at my level make those kind of blunders all the time, and sub 1000 players would be a lot less principled (eg. black trading down a rook when they were up a queen, white spotting the pinned pawn and playing Nd4)

To be honest, I was expecting to hear Gotham's process of reasoning.

He's a great chess instructor, a d his teaching experience definitely gives him the upper hand in a game like this.
As a 1460 ish player we do indeed have games like the first. I feel anything under 1600-1700 has the potential to just become a blunder fest depending on levels of concentration.

I think GMs don't realize how much impact time pressure can have on some 1500ish players. I play like a complete idiot on anything 5 minutes or less.

Yes! This is exactly what I was thinking! I'm an intermediate player that can beat a 1600 level player in a 30 min game. But for 3-5 minute games, i can see myself making several mistakes/blunders. The 950 level game really had head scratching though that was bad!
That's why i just play rapid or with 15sec increment
I play a lot of bullet so I’m fine, but I can see how this is an issue for some other people
thats why you get different rating for different timecontrols. 1500 in classical is not the same as 1500 blitz

Man, I never thought about it, but Levy and Hikaru play off eachother so well
I think there was a lag on the scoreboard, and at 37:10 Levy saw that his score was red and Hikaru's was green, which would mean it wasn't a three digit game... and he didn't see that it was over 1600 until 37:16. Great double take there.

Game 31:00 the only reason I knew it had to be about 800 was that pin found by the bishop. I know no one below 800 would of seen that pin with the bishop winning the queen. Cause I think they played around 500 elo but that pin if you do puzzle rush is usually I think around 8 - 13. I love this series btw, awesome content!

I'm actually really enjoying these as someone who doesn't really play much chess.
I'm 100% fully on board with how competitive you get in a for fun goofie game like this. It actually makes it so much more fun to watch when you're trying to 'win' and deliberating on things from a standpoint of being behind in the competition, hah.

dont agree with hikaru and him, time matters a lot with low elo players, my level of quality in a rapid is unmatchable compared to my blitz match.

21:00 Hikaru, I’m a 515 and even I saw the mating pattern it’s really obvious
Where’s the back rank mate?? If white’s queen checks on c4, can’t black block with either the rook or queen?? I feel really dumb for not being able to see it lol
@@robertovillagran5364 Hikaru explains that black blocked the mate by moving his h pawn up but if he didn’t, white could move his queen straight up and the only way to avoid check is to block with your pieces which still leads to mate in 3
@@TheRaveRobber no, that's the point, the black rook and queen point to the same blocking square. If white checks with their queen on c8, black just blocks with a rook to d8 and the white queen cannot take it with another check, it is defended by the black queen. Still probably winning for white, but I just don't see a mate. I am a 1000ish player though, so that might explain it. If you could write down the line ur thinking about, that could be really helpful. And to be clear, we are talking about the exact position at 20:20

I think this just goes to show that the further they get from their own elo, the poorer their frame of reference is. Levy was spot on in the 21-2500 range.
