In today’s video, the biggest struggles for those trying to help survivors of trauma include understanding what they are seeing, as survivors may experience drastic personality changes, such as going into a numb zone or having flashbacks. Trauma's impact depends on the severity, chronicity, and age at which the trauma occurred. Trauma experienced in adulthood can still be traumatic but is easier to heal from if the survivor had a solid foundation beforehand. In contrast, trauma experienced during childhood, especially abuse, affects the very foundation of the survivor's sense of self and can negatively impact them if they later experience trauma as an adult, such as in combat. Survivors with a history of childhood abuse are more likely to experience PTSD if they also experience trauma as adults.
