He emphasizes the importance of being the most mature person in the room, as it helps to lead the child towards maturity as well. Instead of trying to control the child, the parent's job is to control themselves and their response. While there are techniques to stay calm, the author points out that there is no one size fits all solution. However, a parent's response to the situation can change its outcome. Hal shares an example where he would stand between his children when they fought and only tell them to figure it out in five minutes; this allowed his children to start policing themselves.
