  • In this video, Leah discusses how obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can be connected to chronic sinusitis and its implications for VA disability claims. She explains that sleep apnea can be rated on a direct basis if diagnosed in service or as a secondary condition related to another service-connected disability, such as sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, obesity, or GERD. Through various studies, Leah highlights that nasal congestion significantly increases the prevalence of OSA and that conditions like chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis contribute to upper airway patency impairment, thus exacerbating OSA. She also delves into how nasal pathologies, including deviated septum and nasal inflammation, play a role in OSA by causing breathing obstructions.

Thanks for all you do Leah, greatly appreciate it by all of us. Was denied sleep apnea direct. Now that the VA has provided a CPAP device should I go back and try sleep apnea as a secondary to either my migraines or tinnitus rating?

Hey sir thank you for the kind feedback. I am sorry to hear about your denial. You would need to show how your tinnitus of migraines caused the sleep apnea and that may be difficult. Best of luck to you and keep us posted

I was just granted OSA secondary to asthma. I am now 💯 p&t. Leah I would like to thank one of your team members Paul Dennis who wrote my Nexus. He wrote my Nexus connecting my OSA to my allergic rhinitis and my asthma. The VA chose to connect my OSA to my asthma.

Read your comment and I am currently awaiting decision for OSA secondary to asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, hypertension, and GERD. Paul Dennis PA-C wrote my Nexus as well, my question to you is did the VA combined the OSA and asthma rating as one? How long did your decision take? Thank you in advance.

Thank you for this video. I had a sleep study as directed by the VA and OSA was confirmed and the attending physician suggested a CPAP; however, the VA denied my claim for direct service connection. I will be resubmitting as a secondary IF my appeal is denied. This is so frustrating!

Leah, I would appreciate your thoughts on this...would it be better to file a claim for OSA secondary to Allergic Rhinitis or secondary to Sinusitis? Or secondary to both Allergic Rhinitis and Sinusitis? Thanks in advance for your comments. Keep up the good work you're doing for vets. David

    question for you.
I just had GERD, Sleep Apnea, and Migraines denied, I have diagnosis for each, had nexus for secondary to severe sinusitis currently 50%. They originally didnt send me to a C&P, then after it was in for decision decided to have me do a Phone call C&P for TERA, then denied stating no primary service connection yet I asked for secondary. I got my nexus from you for each. Why would they deny me primary when I'm secondary
