  • In this video Leah discusses common conditions linked to PTSD in veterans. She outlines five key secondary conditions: headaches (including migraines and tension headaches), sexual dysfunction disorders (often related to PTSD treatments like SSRIs), gastrointestinal disorders (like IBS and GERD, connected to stress), sleep apnea (controversially linked to PTSD, with emphasis on showing causation), and various conditions stemming from PTSD-related weight gain, such as plantar fasciitis, coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes, and sleep apnea. Leah highlights the importance of understanding these connections for veterans seeking disability claims and provides references to studies and resources for further information.

I highly recommend this consulting firm and I do not even have my decision yet. The Nexus letter I received was very well written. I recently won a claim for IBS secondary to anxiety and PTSD but was denied GERD for the same thing, with the VA rater citing that GERD is not a valid secondary condition to PTSD. I'm guessing that I can fight back and win this claim, because my mental rating includes anxiety, PTSD, and depression, but the rater cited only PTSD in the denial. There is documented medical studies linking anxiety to GERD, and the rater ignored mentioning this in the denial.

Hi Monti409 and hopefully Leah too!
I read you question to Leah and hope that you're ok with answering what path did you ultimately selected, PTSD or depression? My situation is simliar to yours and I'm confused (please see below)
      1) Around 2009, I was diagnosised and treated for PTSD prior to retiring from the military.
2)In 2010, I had a VA C&P exam for PTSD, but the VA C&P Doctor and VA Rater redesignated it to Major Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder at 30%. The doc and rater stated the stressor was missing in the rating decision.
      3) After service, I've been treated by VA Mental Health from 2010 through now, but everyway VA psychologists and psychiatrists treated me for PTSD and Bipolar. The VA psychologist and psychiatrist treatmemt teams argued that my symptoms etc...aligned more with PTSD and Biploar.
      Here my challenge.
      1) I am trying to submit for an increase on the 30% major depression and generalized anxiety, but my entire Mental Health trecord from 2010 to now shows treatment for PTSD and Bipolar.
      2) Should I still submit as an increase for major depression and generalized anxiety disorder or submit for a new claim for PTSD and Bipolar? I don't know! I'm confused and stuck!
      3) My thoughts are the VBA considers all mental health conditions under mental health for rating purpose, therefore, it doesnt matter, but I could be wrong.

Yes, it could. PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, somatic symptom disorder, adjustment disorder, etc. are ALL rated under the Mental schedule. You can get awarded 0% to 100% for each. However, you cannot , for example, combine any of those conditions to get to 100%. The best strategy is to get 100% P&T for one of those conditions since they are rated the same. Then pursue your secondary claims I hope this helps.

I recently applied for sleep apnea secondary to s/c anxiety due to weight gain and was denied. Attached several pieces of literature I claim regarding weight gain being linked to to the particular meds I've been on to treat my anxiety and they stated it was irrelevant and how sleep apnea is a physical condition.

I have 70% PTSD, unfortunately you can not have 2 claims for mental disorder. They choose the greater of the 2. I've had anxiety through the VA at 50%. I went to get an increase and they switched it to ptsd and 70%. I asked them why I don't have both and that's when I found out they only allowed one mental disability. Hope this helps
