  • As you know it was big news that the west coast of the US was going to get hit by a hurricane for the first time in something like 30 years... The first half of this video is my preparation for this behemoth (lol) storm and the preparations that I took.
    The second half of this video is a small project I did on my headstay whilst my head sail was down for the storm.
    I'm just bring y'all along for the ride so I hope you enjoy the video.
    Cheers! - Andy

    I'm stoked about Stoked!! Doesn't hurt to prep but Hilary was a lot of hype. I did get a lot of rain in the High Desert and the storm definitely tested my drain system. Winds were pretty much like a typical winter storm. The roads got really rutty also.

    The only thing I'd suggest with the headsail is flake it so the luff is in a straight line. I.e flake it so you pull the sail up to the luff as you go. You ll find it easier to raise it back up. Figure of eight knot is the more usual stopper knot and probably easier, but whatever works for you. Cheers

    Always enjoy the videos Andy. I went through similar prep on my boat up in MDR and was happy that, in the end it wasn’t needed. And yes, my sailing buddies in FLA were amused …

    Solid SoCal Hurricane prep😂. One thing before/after tuning your rig that I would have done was put the backstay under cruising load and see if your mast is sitting where you want it. Then I’d adjust headstay accordingly to get the desired mast rake. It’s a little different on mine since I have a keel stepped mast and hydraulic backstay, but the same general rules apply.

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 10 měsíci

      I know right?! What a hoax. Rumor has I’m not the only one who did a little prep 😉.
      Thanks for the tip. I still need to sea trial it but I can mess around with the backstay bridal to adjust the mast rake.
      It has felt loose-ish for a while so I’m sure the two turns that I gave it can only help.

      Just had one of the popular Transpac riggers survey my rig and he recommended adjusting the headstay to a length of 1-2% of your mast height.

    Better safe than sorry, Andy.
    i went to a used bookstore and low an behold they had a rigging book and diesel repair for $7.95 each. It was invaluable for fine tuning my rigging and lots of other stuff I didn't know about. I would put the two windows at the top of the list, there a pain to do but you want a dry boat, mildew sucks.

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 10 měsíci

      I could definitely use a a riggers handbook. My rig is simple but there's a science to it all. Yes, windows are top of the list at this point. Thanks for the advice. Cheers.

    Hey Andy
    I just want to say a few things.
    Your Backstay bridle is primarily for controlling Headstay Tension. The tighter it is, the flatter your genoa will be, and the less "headstay sag" you will have. Heavy air: Flat sails. Light air: ease it to get some sag in the headstay, fullness in Both the main and jib, and let the fullest part of the sails move aft a bit.
    Easing the halyards a bit in light air will also make the sails fuller, but with slightly different results.
    The main is affected as well bc the other function of any backstay tensioner is to Bend the mast. A masthead rig like yours, along with a relatively stiff mast like yours, is less effectively bent by the tensioner than a mast whose headstay doesn't reach the top of the mast.
    I am just scratching the surface here.
    Your stopper knot! Hope you did not mis-read what I wrote about it, but I was trying to tell you that whether you knew it or not you were tying the traditional version of the modern "figure eight". The knot that you tied has been used for this purpose for at least a thousand years longer than a figure 8. The fact that it came naturally to you cemented my belief that you are of above average intelligence.
    Your headstay turnbuckle is for setting the Mast Rake, and of course the Headstay Length.
    We Tension the headstay after setting the Rake (adjusting the length of the headstay turnbuckle) by tensioning the backstay turnbuckle(s) (sometimes each leg of the bridle has its own turnbuckle). Sometimes boats, esp outside our country, have two backstays. Advising what to do is Never "one size fits all". Every boat is different. Even every Cat 30 is different, for the most part.
    Wonderboy repeated some advice re: How Much? well, on some boats 1 to 2% is going to work, mainly "fractional" rigs. Stoked is the 'other kind': a Masthead Rig. On Stoked, that would be almost 4 inches or more. Which is at least twice as much as your turnbuckles can tighten. So let's stick with Your application.
    You do not need a Loos Gauge, even to tune your rig. All you need to do is (after lubricating both of your turnbuckles with Starbrite 086302, or Nickel based anti seize, or stikwax, BEFORE any loosening or tightening happens):
    Stand facing aft in the cockpit, and grab your backstay near the triangle plate at the top of your bridle.
    Lean (bounce) back, like you mean it, a couple of times while looking up at the backstay. At first, the middle of that cable (your backstay is technically 1x19 STRAND) will deflect maybe 6 or 7 inches in the middle. This is called Elastic Elongation. What you want to do is tighten the backstay turnbuckle enough that you have removed as much of that "stretch" as is practical. You want to finish up with only a couple of inches of deflection. Tightening the backstay very much beyond what removes the stretch is just gonna banana the hull.
    Tip: Before adjusting any turnbuckle, Zero it Out. Because you have no idea Who was the last person to touch that turnbuckle, and what they did to it!
    Your backstay is called 1 by 19 because it is a Single Strand of 19 wires. You have (starting from the center of the cable) One wire going up the middle. This wire has One Job: to keep all the other wires where they belong. Inside your backstay is the second layer, that you can't see: Six wires wound around the core wire. They are normally wound so they travel up-and-to-the-right. In the USA, that's called "right laid".
    The outside layer, that you can see, is 12 wires, normally laid up-and-to-the-left. This is called "left laid". Most cables (and three strand rope) are constructed of successive layers twisted or wound opposite the layer before them.
    Anyway, since you have six trying to twist one way, and twelve trying to twist the other way, AFTER you're done, you will wanna do one final micro turn to try and bring those two competing forces into equilibrium. If you have a lubricated turnbuckle, even if it's Bar Tight, it will tell you which way to let it slip. The only way you're going to hear it right is if you zero out the turnbuckle while it's still loose. Otherwise, somebody may have adjusted the top screw and not the bottom. Or whatever. Start Clean.
    It's OK to hold the stud with vise grips. I use 4WR ViseGrips. However, the only place you can clamp on is adjacent to the threaded part. The part of the threaded stud that the 1x19 goes into is a tube, which will crack if you clamp or grab it there.
    Of course you want to turn the turnbuckle body, and not the stud. But it is more common than you might think for someone who did it last time to turn the stud instead. So Lube, loosen, and Take it apart First.
    Alright, this is where people get in trouble.
    Folks, Andy's boat has two sets of Lower Shrouds. That means that his mast is not going to fall over just because he disconnected his Headstay or Backstay. Make sure you have something that will hold the mast up while you're disconnecting stuff. Like Lower shrouds on their own chainplates. Inner forestay. Running Backstays. Mainsheet + Main Boom Topping Lift. Halyards. Use your Head, open your eyes (please).
    Back to Step Zero: If you want a record of where the turnbuckle was set before you loosened it, do not use tape marks. Measure the distance between the two threaded ends with an inside caliper. OR, Measure the distance between the bottom turnbuckle pin center, and the top pin if you have one, or between the bottom pin ctr and the top rim of the swage stud, if you have Tubular turnbuckles. You need to repeat this setting accurately if you are replacing a shroud or stay. Number One rookie mistake is measuring a shroud while it's still up. ALWAYS measure your shrouds and stays while they are lying on a flat surface, and under 10kg of tension, and to the farthest pin ctr or Gibb hook Bearing Surface possible, with the turnbuckle set Exactly where it was before you loosened it. OK Enough Digression.
    Hey! That's all! Phew!
    Andy, the reason I wanted to email you is bc I have some ideas for video subjects, If you want to venture into aspects of rigging that NOBODY Else covers. Sailing Sole is the most watchable channel I have ever seen, bc of your easy, engaging style.

      PPS: Some Catalinas have bronze turnbuckles with ss tube covers. If you are upgrading your rigging, keep in mind that very few other brands of turnbuckles will fit your chainplates.
      And when you're assembling the 3 parts of your turnbuckles:
      Start by screwing the bottom together 3 turns before the tops. That way, when someone with two hands is taking them apart, they won't have to keep 3 pieces from going overboard.
      And Last, some Arco turnbuckles should never be disassembled without dressing the threads around the cotter pin holes first, since those holes are drilled After the turnbuckles are assembled the first time.
      Thanks

    for those 2 missing screws i would check your manual and see if the brand and model of the roller furling is listed. if so you could order from the company, or contact the company and ask the size of the screws, then go buy some from a local hardware store. or if the manual doesn't tell you the info you need to do that, then i would just take one of the remaining screws to the nearest hardware store that has a huge selection of machine screws, and ask for some help finding an exact match, or if you can only find something that has all the same dimensions but is a bit longer that will work too, because you can always cut down then sand a longer screw to make it fit. i can't count how many times i've done this in the past on all sorts of different projects

    There were a lot of things at play with the much-hyped Hurricane, then Tropical Storm Hilary: the TV news, predictably hyped it up to get eyeballs on screens, while politicians and bureaucrats took the opportunity to make themselves look good, especially on the heels of the Lahaina tragedy. Better for them to over react, for sure. The most important thing, however, was I had the perfect excuse to go sailing all day Saturday because, as I told the wife, “I have to make secure the boat ahead of the storm.”

    Yo brother local here in south county I’m 26. It’s my dream to own a sailing cruiser and live on it. I grew up in Santa Ana i bussed it everyday of the summers w my inflatable sea eagle I asked for Christmas since I was 9 years old til 13 and we moved to the high desert. I’m back in oc now! Back home, im determined to make this dream of living aboard happen:
    I’d love a video about how your process went as far as securing a boat slip.
    I’m seeing the waitlist do you need to own the boat before hand? Any suggestions for a 26 year old aspiring to do this?
    Doing copious research on boats and sailing but the more I look into securing a boat slip the slimmer my dreams look to be coming true. Watched all your vids bro! Love some insight.

    • @sailingsole
      @sailingsole  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi Rob. I may put together a video like that but really you need to do your own due diligence because slip inventory changes at random and each marina has their own rules. You need to call the marinas that you are interested in and see if you can get on the waitlist without a boat. Do this at a few marinas and your chances increase.
      I only had to wait 2-3 weeks to get a slip at Shoreline but that was 3 years ago.
      Simple sailing advice… If you don’t have a boat, join a yacht club or find some people to race with. I still need to get out and race. I haven’t done it yet but I hear you learn a ton when you race because there are so many sail changes.
      How to get a boat advice… Work hard, then work harder and save money and fund your dream. You need copious amounts of hard work and unfortunately a decent amount of money to realize your dream. You can do it on a budget but you’re still going to need a realistic amount of money to buy and refit (if needed) a boat to be suitable to live on. Just WORK HARD! That’s the best advice I can give you right now. 🤙🏼
