    The only person I ever got to a line to get an autograph. Scott was super cool and also gave precious posture tips for when at the drawing board. His books opened my mind to a lot of things at the time, and they continue to do wherever I revisit them.

    Understanding Comics really is a monumental work of brilliance. It almost goes beyond comics and into the metaphysical!

  • @Arekitesh
    @Arekitesh Před 2 lety +12

    Early on in the video, Jim R. mentions the increasing interest in comics in academia in the early 1990s, when Understanding Comics came out. I think one part of that equation was the widely-discussed 1990 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art ''High and Low: Modern Art and Popular Culture", which presented works of Picasso, Liechtenstein, Oldenburg, etc. alongside Kirby, McCay, Herriman, etc. The museum also published an accompanying coffee table book. I remember becoming infuriated leafing through the book and seeing Plastic Man identified as a member of the Fantastic Four.

    Understanding Comics is definitely discussed in my comics course, but also in general Visual Storytelling for my animation-based course too. “The McCloud theory” re: panel to panel communication of comics, is something I discuss in storyboarding for film in my uni courses too. Imho a great way to simplify ideas to students learning to communicate a panel at a time/choices in editing and storytelling by using “action to action” or “aspect to aspect” as descriptors for storytelling moments/choices of pacing. A Great book indeed. Excellent shoot as always 👍🍻

    I love this guy. Such a positive, creative guy. His mindset is infectious in the best way. Literally while watching this I drew two drawings. Just inspired by the conversation. Loving every minute of this.
    One of the best interviews so far. This man is just full of great history, stories, and he is still relevant and busy at innovating to this say.

    Scott McCloud is a truly sweet soul. I worked in comics and figured I knew the score about the medium, but UNDERSTANDING COMICS kicked my ass AND rearranged my brain circuitry! I remember when I read the part about what panel gutters actually represent...and just tripping OUT, my mind *blown* with the cosmic truth he uttered.

Lots of wonderful insight from a person who is super kind, charming, and articulate. Kudos on another great interview, gentlepersons. Thanks.

    For over a decade i was chasing a proper process for designing panels for print and for web (Later 1:1 Instagram. I was creating everything in layers that can be recomposed to avoid bad cropping, squashing, etc. Anyway, that shit took forever, nearly every object in every panel in it's own group of layers... and that's why I never got anything done. Sticking to print/page format now.

    I would love to tell scott mccloud that he is a talented author but it would be putting him down.
    He simply has a master's skill and knowledge that he has gained through titanic study and experience.
    Although he is normally recognized by understanding comics, on the other hand THE SCULPTOR is easily the best comic I have read, no comic has had a story, themes, and a protagonist that have touched me so much.
