Jackson is the capital of the State of Mississippi and Jackson State’s music program is one of the best in our country. The Sonic Boom of the South is THE band to be reckoned with and not an easy one to get admitted to. Most of this isn’t close to their best performance as the first one i
Is all percussion. To get the full effect you need the percussion, woodwinds, and horns. It will knock your socks off.

All of the HBCU bands are absolutely mind-blowing. The HBCU schools are all smaller colleges (Division I-AA and Division II) and so they don't play in the larger stadiums like most Division I-A schools. You really need to see one of their on-the-field halftime performances. These parade performances don't do them justice.

By the time the public sees it the people have done the show so many times that they could almost do it in their sleep. The movements are basically by muscle memory and their concentration has to be on the music. They are playing very tough renditions of the songs and marching/ moving at the same time. Also notice that the drummers are all hitting with the same stick (right or left) at the same time.

I lived in Jackson, Mississippi for about 30 years. During that period I saw this Marching Band perform many times live. The energy this group brings with them into such an event is impossible to verbally describe. It has to actually be "experienced" to fully comprehend what is going on. The State of Mississippi is considered very rural, uneducated, unsophisticated, etc. by many people living elsewhere in the United States. I believe anyone attending a performance of this Marching Band would come away from such a dynamic performance with a totally changed perception of Mississippi. I'm glad you enjoyed this.

State Universities are just public universities. Others are either public or private, depending.
And school names could be for the state, town, or famous person, so unless you're an avid fan of US college sports or anything, you're probably better off just researching every school 😁

The Drum Section is called War & THUNDER often imitated but NEVER DUPLICATED!
The front 5 are called the "Fab 5" and they change every season. They have to Audition and it
is tedious process to pick the BEST 5 Drum Majors!

Great review sis...and showing love to HBCU's. In the 90's and when I was middle school, I played trumpet, in Texas...The next year, I tried out for drum major and made it. We have to learn how to read music and have played an instrument, and still compete to be a drum major. Whatever your instument is, you still gotta play that instrument in practice. When I was drum major, My band director made me march and high-step, like J5 and told me to high-step till both my knees hit my chest and stomp so hard that I wanna stomp a hole through pavement. These really are musicians; we marched in the MLK parade, and it was miles long and was almost an hour. In those days, if we got second place in a parade, director made us do pushups and sprints....It sounds great, and these are all musicians. Great band JSUđŸŽ¶

    Majorettes
Section leaders : trumpets , bass, saxophone, drums
    The band itself
    8:50 is the drum line

Black College bands are a big part of Black American culture. J-State is a SWAC school and the SWAC (southwestern athletic conference) has some of the best marching bands in the country.
