JSU was NOT cheated at all. It took me awhile to realize what happen and here you go. NCAT came to a Battle of the Bands competition. Their show was well thought out and colorful. A&T show was a production. JSU show was very good as well however, JSU came to perform at a football game. Their show was great by all means but it was no different from them performing at one of their football games. So there you have it...A&T came to perform and compete at a Competition not a football game.

ESPN used a pwi scoresheet basically tbey wanted auxiliary with flags and corp style marching and that’s something Jackson state don’t have which is why they lost points and if they wanted that type of show they should’ve chose a different swac band 😭i feel like they wasted Jackson states time knowing they weren’t what they were looking for .

The tradition of a true HBCU Band is to be extremely different from any corp style band. You can see a style that comes from your professional corp style bands, and you can see a style that appreciates where black bands come from, and what they could afford and make it a black band experience. Not a perfected version of a corp style band with an up to date playbook. Hats off to SWAC and THEE Boom for sticking to heritage and true culture of a HBCU. Gimmicks shouldn’t matter if we are talking about a Black College Band.
My small input, HBCU bands were built on Power, Fuck, showing the ability to high step and still have musicianship, and to appreciate from whence we come.

    JSU VS NC A&T
    THEME- JSU
▫️JSU’s had an Usher Show while NC A&T had no theme.
    INTRO - JSU
▫️JSU’s Usher/Blowin Mix and the Tiger Run On was exciting while NC A&T just walked on the field.
    DRUM MAJORS - Tie
    DRILL - JSU
▫️JSU did several difficult drills and NC A&T did no drills. Overall JSU out marched them in every way.
    BALLAD- JSU
▫️JSU’s You Got It Bad By Usher was well written and performed. NC A&T trumpets were messing up on their ballad.
    DRUM-LINE- Tie
▫️NC A&T drum-line had stale moments like 21:20 and their chops wasn’t difficult, however, I didn’t like how JSU’s drumline feature wasn’t long enough but you can hear the intrigue parts.
    OVERALL SOUND - JSU
▫️ There was no comparison to JSU’s arrangements/pen game & NC A&T media team enhanced their sound on their video.
    AUXILIARY - NC A&T
▫️NC A&T only because they had majorettes, flags & twirlers but J Settes still were amazing and had a more difficult routine than Gold Delight. Lastly, Gold Delight dancing with the chair didn’t match the song, they def could have left that prop out.
    Field Exit: JSU
▫️JSU’s marched off unlike NC A&T and JSU spelled out THEE SONIC BOOM OF THE SOUTH and earlier in the show they spelled out JSU while NC A&T only did one symbol (A&T) at the end.
Lastly it’s a BAND COMPETITION not a DANCER COMPETITION . I think NC A&T Auxiliary outshined them and did way more movements than the band itself.

About ESPN, they really did not know the difference in marching bands. Their is 8 to 5 and drum and bugle corp. You cannot compare the two. People from the MEAC do not even understand patterns in motion. They cannot do it . The "X" drill done by JSU was way over their heads, lots of practice time to pull that one off. The only wrong thing ESPN did was their camera work and should have offer more money. I like the choice of JSU and NCAT. These two bands represented the best in HBCU bands for 2023. I also agree that NCAT was the winner if I had to choose. If I were scoring, I would have NCAT - 9.5 and JSU - 9.2. The musicality displayed by these bands was excellent and the shows were entertaining. The JSettes were beautiful, talented and energetic as always... but the difference to me was the Golden Delight. What the Delight did there was the best field performance that I have ever witnessed. Many thought that there were three troupes performing - dancers, flag performers and synchronized dancers... but they were all the same women. AMAZING!

I hate that we compare drills. SWAC bands have been doing the same step-2 drill since forever. They haven't had much variety. Here on the east coast, we've incorporated more intricate designs into our routines. Having to incorporate Golden Delight into every formation is why it seems like they're only transitioning. But that's because GD does EVERYTHING. The same 25 girls do dancing, twirling, and flags. So just remember that.
My only other thing is that JSU went with an Usher Show. You can go back to the Honda we were both in back in 2009 and they should've known that we've already done that show. But that's my bias viewpoint.

Regarding the North Carolina A&T half-time show, I think they had this show ready for a long time, making small changes to improve it, a small observation, at some moments it seemed like I was listening to "Norfolk State", for the cleanliness of the arrangements hahaha, but of course it wasn't. Well, about the presentation, what I saw and heard were well-made, risk-free developments, which included flags to further highlight this part of the presentation. Regarding the musical part, they came with a well-rehearsed safety repertoire with well-known songs that have already been performed before, unlike JSU, NCAT called for a Hip Hop medley, perhaps as an allusion to the 50 years of this Culture. I want to highlight the cleanliness of the arrangements and the power of the brass that the aforementioned band presented in this performance, and which I didn't observe at other times, I also think that the spaces for the drums were exaggerated and tiring. Finally, I think NCAT prepared a lot for this championship, and bet on safety if that made the difference in the trial, they entered with a good advantage over SONIC BOOM.

I saw and heard what both bands performed in their half-time shows, and I raise the technical issues of both bands. At first I draw attention to a small, more visible failure of one of JSU's components, right at the beginning of the first entrance evolution when he was unable to keep his leg raised for a long time and ended up stepping on the grass, this must have taken away points from the band. . Regarding the musical part, my impression is that JSU invested in a bolder repertoire with danceable and well-known songs, and fewer hip hop references, the harmony of these songs was beautiful and worked well, but I think the arrangements of these songs lacked prominent participation from some instruments such as trombones, I liked the game of alternating notes between the tubas, but I understand that in general the arrangements were not as clean as others that the aforementioned band has presented in previous moments, I also highlight that it is important in a presentation not there are so many spaces without melody and more Percussion, in the case of JSU, these spaces occurred due to intervals between songs and stages of the presentation, I did not observe musical flaws, nor of evolution, except for the one at the very beginning. My final impression is that JSU gave a fair presentation with musical innovation in blocks, but they could have brought much cleaner songs and arrangements, like the ones they have been presenting recently. That's my opinion on SONIC BOOM!

One last comment, SWAC bands over the last few years has pretty much been dominated by Southern U and JSU which are very volume dominating bands. So, coming from that background there is a tendency to worship volume... the problem is there can be a loss in respect for the nuance that can define the music so there can be a lack of cresendos and other forms of layering which can be lost to volume. NCAT is serious about their music and the typical SWAC band will lose to them every time if they don't realize this and adjust. We have been conditioned to worship the volume because the sound equipment in the phones and video equipment hasnt been so great over the years so the band that played the loudest sounded the best in videos. You can see in this performance that NCAT has volume as well they just wield it with a scalpel rather than a hammer.

JSU show was great. I will say you can tell they studied A&T before this competition. A&T did a Usher theme show for Honda. The X’s forming into one forward March line A&T done at Honda before. We all the “theme feature show” come from A&T. The way the boom March & formed that “JSU” logo on the field was A&T style all day…so from looking at this you can tell JSU had been studying A&T fieldshows I’m just saying. It is what it is…. But overall A&T gave a compete fieldshow the auxiliary took it to a new level and that’s why they were the winners. Aggie Pride!!!

@KBThaBandhead what really hurt JSU is also the best thing they did. JSU went big. They did large difficult drills. When you give more to look at you also give more to critique. For instance you pointed out some crooked lines by NCAT at one point of their drill but because NCAT’s drill was smaller, compact and much more simple it’s not as noticeable. But when you do two very large pin wheels it is very noticeable how crooked they are. The truth is JSU shot for the fences and went big but when you go big it needs to be perfect or every flaw will be seen.

NCAT show was great you just prefer JSU. Here are the categories drum feature, musicality, drill/design, auxiliary/dance and drum major. Here what’s I would pick drum feature NCAT, Musicality JSU, drum major NCAT, drill design live performance not video NCAT based on video JSU, aux/dancers NCAT. My score would gear towards NCAT. 😂

@@itsvenises2520 Despite the mistake, there is NO WAY any reasonable person would give drilling/drill design to A&T over JSU. JSU drilled MOST of the show, did new drills and barely stopped moving. A&T did recycled drills and kept their "drilling" basic and it was still a little sloppy.

I'ma just say this and leave it here... Jackson State IS THEE BOOM.OF THE SOUTH and I love me some Boom but NCA&T has and will ALWAYS be the top tier of all HBCU Bands in my opinion when it comes too "One Band, One Sound"... They always have precision in arrangements in the stands and on the field and showmanship in every field show performances til the end. So JSU knew who they were going up against and they had to step out of there norm, step it up and get with the program bcuz NCAT IS the performance showcase every time. I don't care who gets mad but JSU has never performed that well and on that same level of showmanship, arrangements, etc; as NCA&T. Hands down JSU still killed their performance. I really think ppl feel like JSU was snubbed only bcuz of the choices of songs that were played vs the fields show. They both did great and I love them BOTH
