Not even close. Yes he nearly died but recovered fully. Now Mike Utley of Detroit Lions was paralyzed and wheel chair bound for life after a hit in 1991

  • @jerrygray647

Actually, what he had was cardiac arrest. That's different from a heart attack. If you watch the tackle, he suffered blunt force trauma to the heart. It was a direct hit, which caused an interruption in the electrical rythym of the heart. That will instantly stop the heartbeat. Basically, he dropped dead on the field. Without immediate CPR to restore the heartbeat, he would've been deceased. The staff saved his life. A heart attack is different because it involves blockage in the blood flow to the heart, for example, a clogged artery.

Mad respect for the medical staff and for how quickly the situation was assessed by everyone.

I'm a Buffalonian and obviously also a Bills fan. What an emotional night that was and then the rest of the story how his recovery unfolded. Amazing stuff and makes you wonder about a higher power. Glad you watched this.

I wasn't complete and utter shock. To see such a young healthy athlete Go from vibrant player to this moment still with One of the scariest sports related instances I've seen. Thank you to the medical staff that helped him recover

  • @ydoucare55

Calling it the "scariest day in NFL history" is pretty crazy considering a player actually died on the field in 1971.

  • @big8dog887

In 1971, a player actually did die in an NFL game. His name was Chuck Hughes, playing for the Eagles against the Bears, he had a heart attack on the field. No hit was involved, he had a pre-existing condition.

  • @LavitosExodius

Commotio Cordis is the medical term you thinking of and it is 97% fatal if immediate medical aid isn't rendered in 3 minutes in this case CPR. Damar Hamlin is extremely lucky this happened in 2023 as opposed to in the 90's when it still wasn't understood that well.

I watched it as it happened. I remember celebrating that amazing hit, being someone who played the game growing up, I love seeing hits like that. But as soon I saw his knees buckle my heart sunk into my stomach. I immediately knew something bad was going on. When the NFL announced that the teams had 5 minutes to take the field, fans from all over the country took to their social media feeds and began ripping into the commission and the NFL. None of us, not one single fan wanted to see that game continue.

This shows that no moment is taken for granted. Damar Hamlin won the fight and it was a miracle. Nothing is more important than his health.

My son and I were there. And as someone who witnessed the vibe after it happened, they made the absolute best decision to not continue the game. We’re huge Bengals fans, and they looked really good up to that point, but you could feel the deflation in the stadium. Crazy situation, and good video!

The kickoff return was the first one in 3 years and 3 months it was a Amazing even had Josh Allen crying when he figured out thwt

  • @IndependentOutsider

One of the positive outcomes also were groups advocating for defibrillators and life saving equipment for college and high school athletic programs. Interesting how a scary and potentially tragic moment can create positive change.

I live in Finland. Huge Bengals fan. My work starts at 6 am, woke up at 2.30 am to watch the game. I was in total shock after it happened and when I got work my coworkers noticed it and ask what had happened. They where terrified when I explained and throw out the day I continuously searched for updated about Damar. The incident was even published here in Finland, witch is rare because usually they only report about Super Bowl. I'm so happy he made a full recovery and it was so nice to see him watching in the stadium when Bengals and Bills met during the playoffs.

  • @Terrell070

There has only been one death on the field in an NFL game ever. Chuck Hughes. College Football had 40 between 1900 and 1905.

  • @user-bv9jv7cy3h

If you're hit in the chest at the right millisecond in the heart cycle, it stops the heart. I know he decided to go back to play after a full recovery, knowing the risk of a repeat problem. Great guy.

  • @Montweezy

He got tackled during a certain point in his hearts rythym that caused his heart to stop by being compressed by the tackle at the same moment the heart was supposed to be filling with blood during a normal rythym causing his heart to stop beating.Luckily they had a defribillator and were able to start CPR and use the defribillator to restart his heart.

  • @MGower4465

I had a high school teammate with a similar last name in the late 80s. He was expected to contend for a starting slot as a defensive tackle his senior year, but during that summer he was accidentally shot while hunting - by his brother, in the head.

  • @RyneMurray23

I saw this live on TV and I gotta say they were right on him making sure he was ok. That's the first time in NFL history that they stopped the game and didn't finish it.

  • @Montweezy

Another thing that helped was Cincinnati Medical Center is only 4 miles from the stadium.
