    My Nodic is in O1. I have experienced the both steels O1 and 12C27 on Enzo knives. They are both on a soft side and will take micro rolls and micro bends in your initial use. But after some restorations of them, the bevel will take a micro convex bevel from stropping or will go slightly convex totally from water stone sharpening. Then the edge will go much stronger against rolling or bending. O1 and 12C27 are very similar in performance and I prefer 12C27 because it is stainless. Thanks.

    @ryanrrx In my experience Canadian Special is the fastest wood cutter because of its thinnest geometry. My second thin Bark River is this Fiddleback Recluse. Bravo1 and Gunny are thicker than them and slower in wood cutting for sure. Thank you!

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  Před 12 lety

    @IMBW89 Bark RIvers are very good. But they happen to have a remaining flat micro bevel which cannot go sharp unless we remove it. All fallknivens have a secondary micro V edge and don't take stropping unless we remove it. Karesuandos also have it out of the box. In my experience a genuine sharp Scandi edge out of the box is only Enzo. Helle and Mora is sharp out of the box, but they have a sharpened micro convex bevel. I personally like Enzo Nordic edge for small wood cutting most. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  Před 12 lety

    @colwild It is Fiddleback Recluse made by Bark River selling at KSF exclusively. Thanks.

    Have you worked with Mora triflex steel? I have one after working with just the factory edge I decided to redo it. The edge rolled and would not hold, I then put a convex edge on it that solved the problem. The wood was hard, so i tried my clipper it was not effected the same way that the triflex did.

    @virtuovice  Před 12 lety

    @redchevy1957 Unfortunately I have not yet had the Mora triflex knife. But I understand carbon steel is harder and tougher than a stainless steel. I should have chosen the triflex one. Thanks.

    @AjiraKimberly I am always watching Helle knives at Heinnie Hayness or Knifeworks. Heinnie takes much less shipping cost for international buyers. But Knifeworks has decent stocks of Helle. Thanks.

  • @ladoga
    @ladoga Před 10 lety

    For what it's worth mine is 8,5cm blade lenght, but I'd prefer it to be bit shorter, maybe 7-8 cm to be even more maneuverable. The handle is made from birch bark, which gives very good grip even when wet and is durable (naturally anti-bacterial/anti-fungal). Blade is hand forged good quality carbon steel (from my limited experience it's simply exceptional). It came with a slight microbevel, which is not always the case with puukkos, but if one doesn't want to sharpen as often it's only good.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  Před 12 lety

    @ryanrrx I did it. But I cannot make a rational video on it. But it's clear that Bravo1 has bigger wood breaking power and Recluse has moderate wood breaking power and deeper bites. And as a result Bravo1 took 30 sec. and Recluse took 20 sec. on the same soft pine wood. I understand Recluse is a better bushcrafter. Thanks.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  Před 12 lety

    @staysharp84 Bark River Fiddleback Recluse is pricey. But the other Nordic knives are not so much. I like Heinnie Hayness in the UK because they have a variety of Nordic knives and their shipping is extraordinarily low to Japan. Brisa Enzo prices will get low after logging in there. Their shipping is also low. Thanks.

    Say Heah Doc, I recently found out that a curved belly was a very good slicing edge, that explains why one of my Fav's is my Rod Garcia Skookum Bush Tool in 3V, it has a curved edge and it just slices like a hot knife tgrough butter. I also got just recently a Ka-Bar Johnson Adventure Potbelly it too has a curved belly and for such a large knife it slices great too. it also reminds me of a large Nessmuk knife on steriods, I always enjoy your classes.

      Are you telling me you have purchased a quality knife in tool steel, and you didn't know what belly was for?

    • @paulie4x1
      @paulie4x1 Před 8 lety

      No, infact I asked for it to have a more curved belly, I apologize if my post sounded like it did, another knife I have my eye on is the JX2 a Chris design from prepared 101 made by L T Wright, and my Skookum is a 4" blade, ,

    • @rustyshackleford17
      @rustyshackleford17 Před 8 lety

      +paulie 4x Generally speaking, I favor the woodlore design for everything but the lack of belly on it makes it a sub-par hunting knife since you have to make a saw-like motion through it.

    You should try a puukko forged by blacksmith Viljo Hakkarainen. His Kullervo puukko was voted the best here in Finland and is also my personal favorite of all. If you are lucky you might be able to order one directly from him from lauri-tuotteet website.
    Puukkos are traditional carbon steel knives used by finnic/sami people, basically same stuff that you'd call scandis. Geographically Finland isn't part of Scandinavia, but "scandi" knives originate from puukkos. It's an everyday tool here.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  Před 12 lety

    @LiamMitts If you use it for wood carving except for batoning, you should never go for a low grind thick Scandi knife like Enzo Trapper. It is not sharp enough for wood carving. But regular Scandi Puukko knives don't have a full tang. So you cannot use it for batoning. Helle temagami is exceptional. To be honest I cannot find a very tough knife in Scandi category. Scandi grind is good for 3mm thick fine knives. I personally like 3.5 mm thick high Scandi grind knives like Enzo Nordic. Thanks!

  • @Stargazer88
    @Stargazer88 Před 12 lety

    a lot of the traditional scandinavian knives have quite thick handles so they can be used with mittens or gloves. As a added "bonus", Scandinavians tend to be quite tall and have large hands. So there is a reason why some handles can be quite thick. But every knife maker will have their personal and regional take on things. a scandinavian edge will in my opinion be the best for woodwork. the simple edge geometry will make cuts in wood very predictable and very easy to resharpen.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  Před 10 lety +1

    If I said so, it means that convex geometry releases the bones but Scandi geometry doesn't but bites them.

    @johnwoodz1220 I am sorry and I didn't count it. It's a very sharp knife and must be a very good bushcraft knife. I actually used it in darkness to make green wood sticks for fish grill in camping. But its soft synthetic handle is not my taste to use with joy. Thanks.

    In traditional nordic bushcraft you often see the handle shape of the kellam knife. But it is nog good for hunting knife purposes. However many in the nordics use phrases like hunting knife, outdoor knife, bushcraft knife interchangable. Maybe because of the tiny population.
