A part-time security guard has been accused of criminal damage after a fire destroyed "priceless" and "irreplaceable" ancient mummies in the crypt at St Michan's Church in Dublin.
Christian Topiter, 38, was held in prison custody on remand pending approval of a person to stand his bail and needs €4,000 lodged in court before he can be released.
Mr Topiter, formerly of Grand Canal House, Lower Rathmines Road, Dublin 6, was charged with causing criminal damage at St Michan's Church to mummified remains, property of Church of Ireland Archdeacon of Dublin & Vicar of St Michan's Church David Pierpoint.
He appeared before Judge Shalom Binchy at Dublin District Court on Wednesday.
Objecting to bail, Garda James Kenny told the court he was concerned the accused would commit more offences or interfere with witnesses.
The garda said there was CCTV evidence and alleged the accused was arrested shortly afterwards wearing distinct clothing.

I have rarely felt so VERY, VERY SAD as upon hearing of the destruction of the mummies. The destruction of the 800 year old Crusader is particularly galling . That man came home unscathed by the Crusades only for his remains to be obliterated 800 years later. As a lover of history this has hit me hard as I have viewed your video about the mummies when you first visited the church. Such desecration is abhorrent and I know how you both feel the sense of loss because I can hear it in your voices.
I send my sympathy to you both and to the members of the church and the people that live locally as I am sure that they were proud to have such examples of their history within the church. I cannot understand what possesses a person to do such a wicked thing.

Why? For what reason would someone want to start a fire in that crypt and destroy such a fascinating and important history? Not only that - but put the safety of the Church itself in danger! I don't, even for one moment, understand why even a drunk addled brain would think this was a great idea. Sometimes I'm reminded of some old words written maaany years ago .... "I do not like the human race, I do not like it's silly face...";;; I can't recall who wrote this, but it lodged in my brain from the moment I heard it when I was in school. The words seem to fit after learning what has happened.

We've had similar issues here in Michigan before. The thoughtless maroons who do this? I pray that incarceration is in that "security guards" future if found guilty. Thanks Sue!

It's truly sickening & saddening, between this and the previous vandalism and the guy who robbed the skulls from it in the past, you have to wonder why folk are so determined to damage a place of such significant Irish historical value 😡
