  • Thousands of AT&T customers from coast-to-coast across the U.S. reported an outage of wireless service on Thursday with their phones simply reading "SOS." Thousands of Cricket Wireless and Verizon Wireless customers also reported an outage. AT&T said early Thursday afternoon that service had been restored to about 75% of customers, but did not provide a reason behind the outage. Federal investigators said they would look into whether this could have been the result of a cyberattack.

Hubby and I are seniors (80 and 75)....we just went shopping at Walmart and nearly all the scan and go self checkouts were red lighted, roped off and down, and had been for some hours. I want to commend the Walmart staff for keeping cool and calm - not letting this (whatever the cause) escalate into a bad vibe scene. It took time to check out my food and etc. But I focused on the nice employees who were helping, and one worker was actually going around, answering questions and assisting at what few checkouts were still functioning...I think life will go on; we are over 40 and, have a different perspective... this isn't a big deal. However they DO need to find the cause.

Good point, but I'll play devil's advocate here; when upgrading to 5G, a lot of providers used the cheapest Chinese Huawei equipment, which could have left us vulnerable. There was no hacking and no one could simply unload your bank account without a human heavily scrutinizing your face, fingerprint, signature card and two forms of ID and you better be there in person. I wish it would reverse to the good old days days. So no, millennial. Your money won’t disappear. Get your lazy ass off the couch and drive down to the damn bank and get your money the way it used to be. Mind you. I’m a developer in the tech industry. Gen X. I still found life much safer back then.

Not going to happen, you need to go read the terms and conditions you "scrolled and clicked" when you signed up for service with any carrier. Cellular carriers are not responsible for lost revenue due to a service outage. Or injury or death if you cannot reach 911.
AND the truth is, even as good as the tech is, cell phones signals are easily affected by a number of variables. Terrain, building materials, weather and atmospheric phenomenon, natural disasters, etc.. Thats before you even get to an equipment, network, or software malfunction, which like any machine does happen. OR a malicious actor. There is no way the can ensure 100% service 100% of the time.
