AT&T blames software update for nationwide cell phone outage

- Late Thursday night, AT&T posted an update saying the outage "was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack."

I don’t believe it one bit… and neither should you
@texasgrillchef8581, actually, it's accurate they just didn't clarify. They meant to say that the "Chinese hacking group which has had access to U.S. infrastructure systems over the last 5 yrs were updating their hacking software and it was THAT UPDATE which unexpectedly took systems offline prematurely!"😂
Solar flare
It’s possible. I suspected that an iPhone software update caused this before it was confirmed.
I lived it as a Nextel cell site technician, it happens.
@@jackashmoreNo, it wasn’t. It happened at 5:30 am. Meaning a flare would barely effect the US. AND a flare powerful enough to wipe out equipment would have impacted many more people and other cell companies. They all virtually share same towers.
Funny how they blamed it in solar flares at first. That excuse is notorious for being given when communicators don't know why something is down.
😂😂😂
They didn’t say solar flares, they were arguing that point across the board…if you actually look into it not just At&T were affected at the same time.
It is solar flare because the earth was hit indeed by 3rd x-class solar flares now why they are hiding this from people not saying the truth, but why? So business continues maybe?
Google project hemisphere
😂😂😂😂😂😂
It's amazing to me that the media kept posting that there were only 73,000 customers affected by the outage when their were clearly wayyyyyyy more than 73,000 customers affected.
It's amazing to me that they didn't report on all the other stuff that went down yesterday.
I think it’s because many companies outsource to other companies (like AT&T) cell towers in some areas. So customers from other cell services in those areas would be affected
@@MrBluemoonhalosI am out of the country currently, but what other things happened? I heard the lights went out in certain parts.
My phone went out from 7am until noon. Then I got on a plane and landed and went on with my life. Just chill. At&t for 20 years, first time I lost service, chill bro.
No testing then in an enterprise environment first? I'm not buying it.
@CandiceAshley7, could it have actually been something legit, it's not impossible but more people are probably inclined to believe that the "outage" WAS the "test" with good reason.
What hasn’t been said is what exact part of the network was being upgraded and who is the manufacturer of that equipment.
And why did some phones work and some did not?
AT&T uses Ericsson equipment
kinda irrelevant and probably too techy to mean anything to anyone except those in that field
@@willrasol I work in telecom. Ericsson is a Swedish company however some of the components in their equipment is made in china like everything else in the world
If it was an upgrade why then was not everyone affected. I have 11 lines on my account. 10 lines were out of service. I get $5. For possibly being affected. WOW.
Attack it was and know they do - yoda
Son you realize people admit to security breaches all the time right…
Why was Verizon and T-Mobile affected?
If they were calling A T T.
Same cell towers
ATT has the largest/oldest network so instead of other carriers spending billions to build their own in the same areas, they just use ATT's fiber to connect to cell towers for a fee. I have T-Mobile and was only down for 10-15 min I could call landlines but ATT customers I couldn't
Exactly!!!!!
So people don’t panic maybe? Cyber!!
This was an attack!
Agreed!!!!
⭐️ Without Question!!
Exactly!
This still doesn't explain why pharmacies and hospitals networks are down.
They probably use AT&T as their vendor
Ah, an untested software update... that's a confidence builder, eh? Wierd how it only affected metro areas.
I’m surprised they admitted it. Unfortunately, you can’t believe anything you see on the news these days, so who knows if this is even true.
“Probably this, or maybe that” look, you fixed it. You know what it was. Spit it out.
@lukepippin4781, they can't do that! It would 1. expose their agenda, 2. prove their incompetence!
AT&T bout to get and law suit on them especially 911 calls lord what is this world coming thru 😮
It was every phone company not just att but they are the only ones that made a statement
The cause of Verizon and T-Mobile were updates too? 🧐
Outsourced cell towers.
They gone shut the world down soon .They are preparing all phones on these same tower's all about power and control
@Mintchip716, well a Chinese hacking group has had access to our infrastructure systems for the last 5 yrs and JoBama opened the border where thousands of Military-aged male Chinese nationals have flooded into the country and I recall the one a reporter asked why he came illegally to the U.S.? And his response "For money, for computer job!" The reporter then asked "What about jobs in China, aren't there jobs in China?" and he replied "I don't know...." Wait so you get on a plane to travel a few thousand miles to illegally enter the U.S. "to find a job" but you don't even know about "jobs in your home country?!" And now all of a sudden "Ooops silly us, a 'software update' just took out thousands of phone communications. That's all nothing to see here!"
AT&T is lying about service being restored. My phone still says SOS. AT&T can do better.
Leave the world behind
Yes! The first thing me and my siblings thought of!
Where not stupid if you know u know this means something
"We're" not stupid. Thank you.
@@malissahyatt2425 you want a cookie
@@user-dz5iw3gh7c It was a little ironic that while trying to say that you were not stupid you used the wrong word lol.
@@ronswanson5629 I don’t give af is me not you 😂
Liars
Why was it that almost all cell phone providers have at least some trouble. This is horse crap.
They're all lying!
How could a software update affect only certain phones and not all. That is absurd. Yesterday when I called a friend the call was answered but not by my friend. I was suddenly connected to another line like a “party” line where I could hear the entire conversation between a financial advisor and his client. Today a software update was made on only certain phone numbers? How does that work? It sounds more like the government had ATT do something to gain access to the conversations of certain people. Tens of thousands is not a big number of customers affected.
It’s not absurd at all. You clearly do not understand how this technology works.
@@pismith1please then, enlighten us.
My parents suddenly got a massive surge of back-to-back robo calls today and one of their neighbors says she answered her phone and heard her grandson's voice on the line despite him sitting right next to her. Not sure what to make of all that but I don't like the timing.
A lot of people have their software updates set to auto-install. I know that the default settings on iPhones do the software updates automatically overnight unless you change the settings. So it is possible that the thousands of people who had their phones set to auto install experienced the outage.
@@Arginne sure, now that we have given it some time to iron out the issue. It looks like someone either pushed or messed up a network configured and unintentionally took out part of the network. This can happen, especially when you are trying to expand your network. My guess would be they didn’t provide the appropriate routes for the routers to route traffic. Not sure what routing protocol they are using but it’s probably something like BGP (Boarder gateway protocol) or some other External routing protocol. I have accidentally taken out internal parts of networks using the incorrect VLans (Virtual local area networks) or improperly configuring an interior routing protocol like OSPF (Open shortest path forward). We won’t know the actual cause but just providing speculation based on my career.
WRONG - I WAS connected to wifi and I couldn't make any calls. It said SOS at the top right. What if someone had an emergency? Our entire company depends on our cell phones so we lost a day of business. It was WAY more than 73K customers - AT&T needs to tell the truth! I have friends/family in Houston, Dallas & Austin and nobody could use their phones!
Solar flares did this. I am an american citizen travelling in the southern hemisphere while the outage happened, and i can tell you that the weather here down south is extremely hot and out of the ordinary. Right at the same time, the outage happened.
Biden insulted Putin, Putin responded
They got hacked!
Sure. It was a "bug," alright. AT&T was simply testing service disruption operations for Big Government, and Big Government-compliant media carries water-as is expected.
That’s BS because it wasn’t just AT&T
Yeah ok 😂 our borders are “secure” too right 🤔🤷🏼♂️🤣
Leave the copper on the poles.
Rogers communications in Canada had the same issue last year.
I never lost my service, but all of my coworkers did. We all work in the same building and use AT&T. There's no wifi, so we're all streaming something using network data as we work. Still can't figure out how it skipped over me.
I did see a news story online earlier this week on how there is a flaw with a DNS server that could bring down a major portion of the net.
2 months free for R Bill with At&t
Squirrels. It was squirrels.
First slor flair then a update now it a bug lol😂😂😂😂😂
@davidtangen8189, honestly I expected the very first thing out of their mouths to be "OMG CLIMATE CHANGE DID IT!! WE NEED TO STOP USING FOSSIL FUELS!! BUY MORE ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLES NOW!!" 😂The irony is that they're STILL polluting the environment with fossil fuel usage because more than 80% of power generation still comes from the consumption of fossil fuels so they're charging those overpriced, impractical "spontaneous infernos" from power sources utilizing fossil fuels!
So we still don't know what happened
@lyleapalk80, Chinese hackers who've had access to your infrastructure systems for the last 5 yrs no doubt were "updating their hacking software" and this is the "software update" which (prematurely) knocked out those phones!😂
But Israel suffered a cellular cyber attack, this has something to do with pegasus software
First they downplay the severity, now they are passing blame?!?
imagine a small event like this got everybody panicked
they want digital money, digital id, everything… what it will be when everything will crash
Rrrriiiiiggghhhttt ummhumm
And if u believe that
Okay take this as a warning no matter what nonsense you want us to believe. We are too vulnerable!
"Software BUG" = H A C K!
Oh no! She had to actually pull over and stop driving to text someone. Sounds like everyone was safer.
And yet they couldn’t say what the outage was until 24 hrs later
Surrrrrrre. This was a softwar update test to see if it works....and clearly it DID work. Now the question is...when are they planning to roll out the rest of it on a larger or more targeted demographic scale?
It's a cyber attack they are getting rdy please be careful
When something happens I blame AT&T for it
If it were an att glitch why did verizon report outtages too?
If it wasn't for the iPhone, AT&T would have got it out of business years ago!
Reminds me of the rogers outage
In my 20 years of building out software systems and architectures, 99% of the time it's a software update. That's why I hate Windows Updates
What da hell my dang phone not be working.
Lies
Of course, it was a technical issue they would not want to instill fear in people by telling them the truth that would be wrong
WOW🤦🏻♂️
I’m not buying it. Governments will do this to avoid the chaos of informing the public of the truth. I just feel bad for that poor software engineer who will be used as a fall guy.
What about the other networks that were not connected to ATT like starlink youtube facebook Verizon boost mobile etc
Don't forget to trust him when the digital download comes out, see what you do when you can't use cash
2:14 Used to work there. Retired. Blast from the past.
Sure sure, and im the queen of England 😂😂😂😂😂
It was the solar flare and don’t let them tell you anything else.
explained. Yeaaaa sure
So if this was AT&T explanation, “bugs during an update software”, someone was responsible for it. I am wondering what will be the explanation of T-Mobile and other companies that and the same problem at the same time. Therefore, why are those companies updating at the same time? This is a lie. Something is wrong and I hate that they won’t tell us. Why only big cities, specifically the ones that are targeted in case of a war? Plus, weeks ago the USA Representative of Security alerted USA of ciber attacks and China hackers putting our system in danger, where he mentioned communication devices, water distribution, transportation, power grid, and more were receiving threats.
It’s a shame that they won’t let us know the truth.
A software update? I would hate to be sitting in front of the RCA committee on this one, watch your corn hole man. 😅
I wonder how many people died that day, due to AT&T lack of transparency. They should give first responders a heads up when they do this kind of actions. Since our government cares more about other countries than our own nation, this will continue
No cause no. How the biggest smartest people just didnt know something like this would happen over the hours of it being out.
I havent updated in awhile.. yet before the turn back on. I updated 3 times
Good reminder to not be so dependent on cell phones….
Thank god I grew up not depending on them and being able to function without them. I actually enjoyed the outage 🤣
This was a test run.....
More lies and misdirection
This was a cyber attack people. Lol
It's a llie,it's a hack
Uh huh...get your cb radios now folks
Please make multiple episodes series deep dive
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said both the FBI and Department for Homeland Security, blamed the outage on Trump!
Lies they would have said that first
I don't believe them in my opinion probably 1 to 2 years from yesterday it probably contacted customers and tell them their information was stolen 🤷🏽
*laughing in Metro PCS*
Look how ppl act with.out cellphone internet like they lost there soul
When we started to be more self-sufficient, I would initially feel very intimidated by the homesteading channels, and erroneously thought that people like Janice were just "born this way", had everything figured out, had all the knowledge from day one and didn't go through any sort of learning curve. I think most everyone starts small and what Janice said at the end rang true for us - we literally started by buying extra cans of Great Value Ravioli from Walmart, because that's all we could afford at the time, but even though that's maybe dismal to a lot of people, it felt good to do that at the time. Like most everything else, purchases compound over time, and God provides, so we praise Him for the resources provided and lessons learned along the way that allowed us to graduate to more substantial self-sufficiency. I know I personally felt quite intimidated by the process, but yet everyone started small, so I was glad to hear Janice mention that :-)
It felt like a multi-booting which allows a new operating system to configure all applications needed and migrate data before removing the old operating system. Possibly caused by the sun, maybe, highly unlikely because it only affected one company!
Verizon sends their regards.
Aja... like they'll ever tell us the real reason.
Windows update be like
Suuuure software update.....
Almost election miracles happen😂😂 New virus, network outages, should be more coming in just wait.
If you believe this I have somethings I can sell you. Clearly a lie and this was obviously a cyber-attack
Agreed!!!!!
Prepping for a false flag event. We see what you’re doing. So many of us are awake and aware.
