  • Late Thursday night, AT&T posted an update saying the outage "was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack."

@texasgrillchef8581, actually, it's accurate they just didn't clarify. They meant to say that the "Chinese hacking group which has had access to U.S. infrastructure systems over the last 5 yrs were updating their hacking software and it was THAT UPDATE which unexpectedly took systems offline prematurely!"😂

How could a software update affect only certain phones and not all. That is absurd. Yesterday when I called a friend the call was answered but not by my friend. I was suddenly connected to another line like a “party” line where I could hear the entire conversation between a financial advisor and his client. Today a software update was made on only certain phone numbers? How does that work? It sounds more like the government had ATT do something to gain access to the conversations of certain people. Tens of thousands is not a big number of customers affected.

A lot of people have their software updates set to auto-install. I know that the default settings on iPhones do the software updates automatically overnight unless you change the settings. So it is possible that the thousands of people who had their phones set to auto install experienced the outage.

@@Arginne sure, now that we have given it some time to iron out the issue. It looks like someone either pushed or messed up a network configured and unintentionally took out part of the network. This can happen, especially when you are trying to expand your network. My guess would be they didn’t provide the appropriate routes for the routers to route traffic. Not sure what routing protocol they are using but it’s probably something like BGP (Boarder gateway protocol) or some other External routing protocol. I have accidentally taken out internal parts of networks using the incorrect VLans (Virtual local area networks) or improperly configuring an interior routing protocol like OSPF (Open shortest path forward). We won’t know the actual cause but just providing speculation based on my career.

When we started to be more self-sufficient, I would initially feel very intimidated by the homesteading channels, and erroneously thought that people like Janice were just "born this way", had everything figured out, had all the knowledge from day one and didn't go through any sort of learning curve. I think most everyone starts small and what Janice said at the end rang true for us - we literally started by buying extra cans of Great Value Ravioli from Walmart, because that's all we could afford at the time, but even though that's maybe dismal to a lot of people, it felt good to do that at the time. Like most everything else, purchases compound over time, and God provides, so we praise Him for the resources provided and lessons learned along the way that allowed us to graduate to more substantial self-sufficiency. I know I personally felt quite intimidated by the process, but yet everyone started small, so I was glad to hear Janice mention that :-)

It felt like a multi-booting which allows a new operating system to configure all applications needed and migrate data before removing the old operating system. Possibly caused by the sun, maybe, highly unlikely because it only affected one company!
