The chief difference between Ford and Reagan was that Ford had not won a presidential election since he was appointed vice-president and came into office when Nixon resigned. Reagan, at the time, was the popular Republican choice.

If there is one constant, it's Trump defying every political and legal norm imaginable.
When I was a kid there were 3 TV channels, ABC, NBC, and CBS. Their anchors Walter Cronkite, Huntley/Brinkley,
and Ted Koppel were all more or less on the left but viewers never knew because stating ones personal political
opinions violated the first rule of journalism, to be impartial. Now there are hundreds of channels, both the corporate
ones and private ones. Folks would be surprised if these "talking heads" didn't state, directly or indirectly, their views.
That's how they get to be famous "stars." The analogy with film stars is obvious. Celebrities like Taylor Swift can
influence an electorate. So, there are good reasons why some voters feel elections are rigged. Partisanship is rampant.
The first president I remember was Ike and he seemed not to take sides.

In retrospect I think Ford did the right thing at the time in pardoning Nixon. But now it would have been better to have a precedent of indicting and trying a former president.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1912 race saw Taft facing off against Theodore Roosevelt in the Republican primary. Even after Taft won, Roosevelt ran as a third party candidate and Wilson won the general election.

I'd love someone to crunch the numbers, what percent of Haley's voters sitting at home on election night would be a game changer. Of 5 or 10 percent sat this one out nationally would that be enough?
1. If no votes shift between 2020 and 2024, Biden wins by default because he won in 2020 :D
2. If we assume without Nikkis influence, Trump would win nationwide by +1 (he lost -5 in 2020), and this maps uniformily onto all state (which is not really realistic), Biden looses
GA, AZ, WI, PA, NV, MI, giving Trump 312 to Biden 226.
2a. If we further assume Nikki's 35% of the (R) primary vote to be representative (and uniform) of the general (R) voters (i.e. of the 2020 Trump voters!),
Biden need to 'claw back' MI, NV, WI, PA (closest here is WI, which he won in 2020 by 1.4%), so WI needs to go from Trump +4.6 to Even.
+4.6 corresponds (in a two candidates race) to Trump 52.3%, Biden 47.7%. 34% Support Trump and voted for him in the primary, 18.3% are calculated to vote for Trump after voting for Nikki.
So we're looking for 34 + 18.3 * x = 47.7, which gives us x=0.75, so if 25% of Nikkis primary voters don't vote in the general (under these assumptions), Biden wins the presidency. It's better (lower percentage of Nikkis voters) if (some of) Nikkis voters vote for him in 2024,
it's worse (higher percentage of Nikkis voters) if they are currently not indicating to vote for Trump in the polls.
2b. If we instead assume Nikki's votes (instead of her vote share) is her ceiling (i.e. all of her supporters do vote in the primary), as the primary is NOT representative statistically (voters choose to vote),
we have to do more maths: Simply distributing her 460k votes over all 50 states, even when many states didn't have their primary yet, is not helpful.
Instead, we look at 2016: in the 2016 GOP primary, WI cast 1.1 Million votes, while MI cast 1.3 Million votes. Assuming Nikkis 292k votes in MI mirrow in WI,
we have 292k Nikki votes (out of 3.3 Million in the 2020 general). Under this theory, Trump voters are 43.6%, Nikki voters are 8.8%, and Biden voters are 47.7%.
Now we need 43.6 + 8.8 * x = 47.7, which gives us x=0.46. So even if half of Nikkis voters sit it out, Trump still wins. Biden then either needs 60% of Nikkis voters to sit out,
or ~25% to cross over to his side and another 5% to sit out.
So, it really depends what your scenario is. If all of Nikkis voters sit out the genreal and szenario 2a is active, and no voters shifted between 2020 and now, and all Nikki voters in SC voted for Trump in 2020, Biden even wins SC. So Math isn't the hard part here, guessing the assumptions is.
