  • @noxanneballadynasowacka6125

    I have a feeling that people responsible for those PS1 remakes are way too afraid to make things unsettling. MediEvil would have been a largely forgettable game had it not been for its creepy gothic setting and the primitive PS1 technology only worked to reinforce that feeling. Nothing in MediEvil ever looked quite right: everything from tombstones, to buildings, to characters, exuded this aura of wrong, as if the world itself could swallow you whole if you weren't paying attention. When you cast so much spotlight on every single character in a scene, suddenly nothing is ambiguous or scary anymore.
    The art director of this opening cinematic didn't do their homework on that overview shot of the city. Please take notice at the background in 2:12. The mountain range and the river you can see in the original MediEvil are landmarks visible in the world map, the level selection screen. In the Sleeping Village level you can even see the river yourself. I'm not sure why in the PS4 release this elaborate background was replaced by the silhouette of a forest.
    With all that being said, it's great to see MediEvil come back to life and I sincerely hope the rest of the game is better than the intro. I think the PS4 Daniel looks spectacular, which is in part a testament to how great his original design is.

      Well said. Mixed feelings for me as yes it is indeed great so see a comeback of a superb game but the overall 'cuter' cartoonish look does take a lot of atmosphere away from the original.
      There are some things I like over the original though, the gargoyles for one, I like that they aren't merely dumb terminals in aesthetics but now can display emotions and feelings via facial expressions but not in a cartoonish way and still remain creepy.
      It's a pity they didn't adopt this approach for the entire game!

    There just something about the character design, animation and cutscenes of the original PS1 version that makes it superior to the remake.
    The only thing better in the remake are the designs of the talking gargoyle heads.

    • @Raizazel
      @Raizazel Před 4 lety +7

      The problem with the remake's cutscenes is that they are made with the ingame engine, all the locations and characters should remain consistent. The original shot of the town presents us with crooked and warped streets and houses something that only works from that perspective you cannot translate that into a 3D and playable environment. As they used again the engine for every shot they are limited in the effects they can use, that's why that shot of the town from the cliff looks like a random WoW village rather than an eery secluded village. One more thing that this remake does wrong is abusing the engine particle effects, instead of a real sorcerer casting a spooky spell the big baddy resembles every spell caster from an MMO or MOBA using a spell that can be spammed all day long.
      In addition to all the limits of using the ingame engine, I must say that the character and location design is plain bad, the source material is just awesome and they were making a remake, so there is no excuse to what they did. The main villain looks like a discount version of a Disney villain, they possessed villagers are not even.... and the worst offender is the hole in the wall, the original looks like a face which is neat, the remake one is just a plain hole boooring.
      About the bit of gameplay shown, in the original all that you couldn't see was pitch black, making you feel uncomfortable and think of all the things that were waiting outside that black void, again in the remake they just throw that feeling out the window

But that's just a nitpick, other then that the remake is fantastic and the in-game stuff acutally looks darker, better colors and contrast compared to the more plain original.

      To be fair, I agree that the stuttering made it look better. I liked that in the OG, whether it was intentional or not, Zarok had a proper limp going on to his right-hand side; something missing in the remake.

      I agree, in the feel that castles with symmetrical stones are far less wretched than castles with convoluted stones. The cheerfulness is quite a contrast to the time in history when Tim Burton took centerstage with his interpretation of droll insusiance. This remake has an unrequited candor all its own as if it took the football and took off in the wrong direction. Youd think all new levels would have dusted this game off, instead this new dazzling CGI programmer made it into a Phantom Menace, we are going to need a sequel to validate a new hope for Sir Dan again

    The Ps1 fmv intro still looks better than the real time Ps4 one for me, better coloured and absurdly better specular mapped. Ps1 Zarok looked soulless as he was supposed to be. On Ps1 his face is correctly shaded in the penumbra and there are correct shadows on the book which instead look pretty much random on Ps4 where there's too much brightness with just a little candle lit in a cave lair underground built into a waterfall.
    Even if mid '90s games fmv cinematics (in general) look kinda "clayish" (though I was really impressed by many of them, back in the day) for nowadays standards they sometime still work somehow better and paradoxically turn out to be more realistic and genuine...

  • @naturesquad9174
    @naturesquad9174 Před 4 lety +5

    I think some of the color pallete and graphical limitations of the original actually made it look better. Sure a lot of places were evenly lit, but certain set pieces and details used very deliberate lighting.
    The remake is detailed but it's like....they made *everything* too detailed so the final image is not as easy to digest, visually...like the eye is drawn in too many directions at once.
    The torch lighting in the original was stark and actually looked like torchlight against dark, and gave spaces/architecture more definition. More impact.
    The remake graveyard just has this "purple" look and oversaturated draw distance, with distant details in like sprites or particles, clouds, etc way too textured
    Like with some of the Spyro reignited lighting/skybox quirks, the developers lack an understanding that sometimes "Less is More"
    And the intro cinematic...doesn't even compare, man.

      It's ok to be nostalgic, I also prefer the original work because I grew up with them, but the idea behind remastering is to use the current technologies to produce a detailed and finished version of a given game. They also need to target a big audience and make big sell to pay the production cost and make a plus value.
      Just like back in the days these were the best graphical game you could hope for.

    • @kecukraftwork1988
      @kecukraftwork1988 Před 4 lety +1

      No, it's to do with actual character design. Colour and lighting aside, in the original he had unnatural markings or wrinkles across his face, indicating great levels of deterioration, age or scarring. The facial 'horns' were also small and subtle, protruding directly out of his skin from his cheekbones, indicating an unintentional 'growth' of sorts, perhaps a magical backlash; whereas the remake has very intentional, pointy spikes with clear exit holes, quite like a typical cartoon villain. The eyes in the original were always wide open, with no eyebrows, making him appear emotionless and psychopathic. The latter has big, bushy brows and overtly expressive eye movements. Whether intentional or not, the original moved in a choppy way, with a clear limp, whereas the latter is very smooth and almost waves his hips. All of this distances the original from looking or behaving like a human; whereas the latter feels much more like they took Zarok's original design and attempt at integrating it with Jafar or something.

    The ps1 game was obviously limited by its tech. However it still holds up today. Giving us a dark atmosphere that I would love to play sometime. The Ps4 looks great with the new tech giving us better poly models, however everything has become so colorful. Kinda reminding me of the spyro remake while the ps1 reminds me of the old dark games of that time. Almost like if they made a nightmare before Christmas game. In fact it kinda reminds me of kh358 Halloween town to be more specific.

    Ohh..that's what's off. Not that the remake looks bad,it doesn't,but the OG version has a blackness looming around at all times. It's why the game's atmosphere is literally dark at times. You're always pressing forward past the darkness,never sure what's coming up next. Now you can see quite far into the distance, the remake has an actual sky & illuminated atmosphere/background and it makes everything brighter. Originally that was probably done due to hardware limitations,but wish they tried to make it work. It really seems to have played on the games tone/feel. It's always why some levels actually scared me a little when I young.

      dont see better cinematics, although we're talking about a comparison of an CGI Render sequence with a sequence in ingame-engine. but its surely too colorfull, which is a "new-age" sickness you can see in almost every second game or so. The topic with the same debate started with diablo 3 if not even sooner. models and design is a question of taste, i kinda like it but i didnt play the original, only the ps1-demo. but yeah, the original had this "ghost n gouls"-vibe with darkened backgrounds, which was likely more a hardware-restriction then a decision of design. as a developer you need some guts and talent to create a dark world like bloodborne or diablo 1 for example.
