Isiah Thomas Drops 44 Points on John Stockton & Co. (The Dream Team Statement Game)

  • Barely a year removed from his back-to-back championship-clinching MVP performance in the 1990 NBA Finals, 12-time all-star point guard Isiah Thomas ended up on the outside looking in upon the September 21, 1991 reveal of the first 10 members of the 1992 USA Olympic Men's Basketball Team (aka "The Dream Team"). Following a contentious conclusion to his Detroit Pistons' four-year playoff blood feud with the Chicago Bulls four months prior, speculation arose as to whether Thomas' absence was the result of stipulations insisted or insinuated upon by at least one other prospective member of the USA Men's Basketball Team.
Regardless of the reason, fellow all-star point guard John Stockton was selected to the Dream Team in lieu of Thomas. And it was with that backdrop that the Detroit Pistons faced off against Stockton and the Utah Jazz early in the 1991-92 regular season. Remaining quiet regarding the selection process and wishing Stockton well (according to long time Jazz broadcaster Hot Rod Hundley), Thomas opted to let his game do the talking.
Shooting 15-of-22 from the floor, Thomas finished with 44 points-his highest regular season output since 1983-in a definitive 123-115 win. While the bulk of his damage came against Stockton directly, Thomas made no qualms of dismantling Eric Murdock and any number of double teams with equal zest and ease.
Thomas, who at one point connected on a 10 consecutive shots in the second half, remained relatively understated following his performance. "It just sort of happened," he said.
A month later, Utah Jazz forward Karl Malone exacted revenge on behalf of his Dream Team teammate. Less than five minutes into their mid-December re-match, Malone landed an elbow to Thomas' face, resulting in a trip to the hospital and 47 stitches in an effort to curb the bleeding. Even then, Thomas did not remain down for long, returning from the hospital to finish the game, narrowly missing a game-winning jumper as time expired. • Isiah Thomas Hospitali...

Years later John Stockton says when the Dream Team was announced, his parents said they received a call from Isiah who told them that he respected their family name, and their son John as a person and a player and he didn’t want them to feel that he had anything personal against Stockton or them but felt he should’ve been selected with or before Stockton and they would soon hear and see him say and do some things publicly to reflect that.
Stockton says that Isiah asked his parents that if they did share this conversation with their son, he suggested that they ask him not to go public with it because the media would then come harassing them for an interview so they kept things quiet.
Stockton says from that point forward he saw Isiah as a friend who did the things on the court in the name of winning and was genuinely a respectful person, which is why he selected Isiah to present him to the Basketball HOF.

Isiah Thomas should've been on the Dream Team. MJ and Zeke would've probably ended up friends had he been there. Oh well, Isiah probably got more recogniton for being shafted than if he'd actually been on the team. The whole thing makes MJ and Magic look pretty small.

Of course not. The Jazz got to the Finals just before the Lakers began their title rebound. I would dare to say that if Phil Jackson was with the team the years Del Harris lost to Utah in the WCF, the Jazz NEVER would’ve broken through.
And this video is just a SAMPLE of how Stockton couldn’t check any of the premier guards of his time. He got that NBA all “defensive” rep for gambling on steals. Truth was, Mark Eaton could just stand in the key all night and block shots WHEN players drove past Stockton. He made it easy for Stockton to play passing lanes.
Stockton was one of the dirtiest players in NBA history. His disciples never want to address that aspect of his game.

The Dream Team was announced in late 1991. The NBA wanted to introduce the world to its product with the Olympics as its display case and Jordan as the main attraction…advertisers like Nike, Coke, Hanes, McDonald’s, and others who had Michael as an endorser also shared the same interests.
Historically, Isiah in charity and all-star games would oftentimes display his wizardry like basketball passing, dribbling, and scoring…wooing the crowd, which is another reason why I don’t think he was selected because playing alongside the players on that roster on especially the world’s stage…he’d have taken much of that spotlight from Jordan and the league, Jordan, his representation (David Faulk), and advertisers weren’t dare gonna allow that to happen so Stockton was the perfect non-threatening choice for Michael and what they were seeking to do.

If Isiah was on that team every practice would end up in fistfights lol. He totally deserved it btw, and i think he dominated Stockton and dropped like 44 on him to prove he was better. I mean they couldve had 3 point guards. Magic was a big guy and was sick already so he could play less games.
Stockton was hiding his injury to be a part of this legendary team, which was kinda selfish.
I would love to see Dream team go up against the "non dream team guys" led by Isiah. That would be nba players pissed off at not playing plus the select team of college stars (which actually beat DT in one practice game).... Plus Shaquille.
Pg Isiah, the Glove and Penny
    Sg Joe D, Reggie
SF G-Hill, Rodman (he was sf at that point)
    Pf Shawn Kemp and Cwebb
    C Shaquille and Zo
I think they would give the dream team a run for their moNey. Plus this squad has more dirty ass, competitive players.
Joe D and Reggie would go at MJ and make him work. Isiah, the Glove and Penny would dominate HIV-Magic and injured Stockton. G Hill always dominated Scottie and Rodman was the bane of Scottie, and Clyde was a choker. Mullin was a great shooter.... But not as great as Reggie. C Webb and Kemp are much faster than both DREAM team PFs so it would be a great matchup of youth vs old. And Shaq would hold his own and try to dominate Admiral and Patrick, with Zo backing him up. And i didnt wanna add Hakeem cause he didnt have a USA citizenship (yet) . Larry was there just for the fun, not a dominant player anymore.
I think my team takes down the Dream team and Zeke gets his revenge

@@Richard-xo2uv Both are great players. Top 10 point guards all-time. we're welcome to argue who was better overall, it doesn't really matter. It's close enough that we're no going to get a definitative answer.
My point would be that Thomas was a score-first point guard. Stockton wasn't. The dream-team already had a few good scoring options and what they wanted was a point guard that would get the ball to those options. .... There is nobody in the history of the game that's going to fill that role better than Stockton.
I'd argue that the last thing the dream team needed was a shoot first point guard.

Isiah was better than Stockton. Isiah took his team to two tiles in a row. Stockton never got one. But forget about comparing him to Stockton, because Stockton also deserved to be on the Dream Team. Here is a list of guys on the Dream Team who had not come close to earning the spot on the roster over Thomas : 1) Laettner 2) Mullin 3) Drexler 4) Ewing.

If he was really trying to show up another elite point guard, he shoulda dropped 18 assists. Instead, he proved he's a great streak shooter, which was already well known. Then the next night, he'll shoot 40% from the floor.........meanwhile, when they were trying to pick the best two POINT GUARDS for the Olympics, Magic and Stockton were the obvious selections.

Stop it😂if you were about telling the whole story you would say Zeke proved he was an elite assist guy throughout his early years. If the entire story was really important you would explain how Zeke changed his game and sacrificed for team success to play the way he did. The tape is there, the stats are there, and the first hand accounts from people in the know at the time is there for the WHOLE story. Zeke sacrificed to be a champion...and that takes nothing from Stockton but he never showed sacrificing his game for the greater good, he stayed who he was....and in fact Stockton himself in interviews has reflected back thinking perhaps he should have shot more often....if the WHOLE story truly mattered to you
