- In this video I chat with my great friend Marilyn about majoring in Social Work. She has a Bachelors in Social Work (BSW) and an interesting career journey.
We also talk about whether or not Social Work may be for YOU, if we recommend taking a break between a bachelors and a masters degree, different pathways for Social Workers, and more!

Gabby, thank you so much for having me on your channel. I had such a wonderful time discussing social work with you and I know that this video will be helpful to so many :-)
This is so refreshing to see WOC here in this platform discussing their SW journies. I am a 40 something BSW student aspiring to get my degree and God willing also pursue my MSW. What are some tips that has help you both stay motivated on your journey. I have been in my head about my age and furthering my education.
SWEETGA BROWNIN thank you for stopping by! And age ainât nothing but a number! When I was in my MSW program I was one of the younger ones. Most people were older with kids and their own families. So no worries there! I have a video on my page all about my MSW experience! I posted it a few weeks ago. I think if you watch that it will ease your mind a bit because it will give you an idea of whatâs to come!
@@MindyourSociety thank you! I think I watched it already but definitely I will go back and viewđ
Iâm 16 years old and I wanna go to college for social work !! đ
same!
Me tooo
Great video. Iâm working on my BSW right now and this has given me more motivation and ideas about other possibilities than straight up social work.
I liked this video cause I was considering a career in education and as I've continued through my bsw I can see the overlap. Great content!
This video really helped me. I study psychology at a community college and Iâm about to graduate and have considered switching to social work for my bachelors. I also have considered sticking with psychology with an elementary teaching certification through a specific program at a college Iâve been looking at. Because Iâm interested in teaching as well. Iâm still pretty confused lol but it helps me to know that even if I did decide to choose social work for my bachelors, I could hopefully become a teacher in the future if thatâs where I decide my heart is :)
erin d thanks for watching! Iâm glad it was helpful. Yes you could also look into joining Teach For America in the future.
Thanks for this informative video. I was in grad school studying social work and I just graduated last month. I was thinking about teaching in South Korea for a little bit. It has always been my passion to go to Korea and teach. So itâs amazing to hear that I donât have to get stuck with one degree.
Congratulations for graduating! If you want to teach in Korea after graduating, I say go for it! I have a video I made about a month ago called âliving internationally can help your careerâ or something along those lines. I give a lot of tips around how to sell your international experience once you get back to ensure that the gap away doesnât impact your career success. Thank you for watching! Iâm glad this video could be helpful for you
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!
milena buchanan you are welcome !

Congrats Rayna! Let us know how everything goes!
I love the video! :)
Thank you for watching and commenting !
I wish I could find a video on social workers who are working in a VA hospital setting.
After careful careful consideration I am ready to start my career as a LMHC and a MC. Im super excited.
Yay! Good luck on your journey
@@MindyourSociety Thank you
Hello! Iâve just discovered your video. I have a friend who is in need of a mentor within this field. Do you have any recommendations?
Thank you in advance!
I'll subscribe now... thanks again
Iâm a junior in the BSW Bachelors program and Iâll be starting my internship in September! :) Iâm excited and nervous. I might be at a school but Iâm also thinking about working with people that have cognitive disabilities and have Autism. Two people told me I should work at at a school because it would be more diverse. Do you two have any advice?
I see your comment here! I think you have to decide if you prefer working with children or adults. If you work at a disability center, you will be working with people of all ages. But at a school, you will work with younger people. I think working at a school would provide more diversity, but Marilyn and I both worked at schools and can say that you need a lot of energy to work with young people! Its very fun but tiring at the same time. Also, you will be working with students, helping them with outside issues they may be having such as poverty, rocky home lives or food insecurity. Would you prefer to help people with finding resources for those kind of issues, or help people to cope and have independence while living with a disability? I think your internship will help you to further decide! Also, you can volunteer with children if you haven't worked with that population before. Good luck, and have fun!
Mind your Society Iâm interested in both but my main passion is to help people with food insecurity, poverty, depression and learning disabilities.
Faerieshimmer social work in a school would probably be a good fit then. You would be able to help students with a range of issues, such as all you mentioned above!
Mind your Society I think Iâll go with that. Itâs too bad I canât visit the school and organization beforehand but I doubt thatâs allowed because my field instructor sends my resume for me.
Is alot of writing involved in BS Social work? English is not my 1st language and i am scared that i will fail(
I said the same thing. You will be fine!
Iâm 32 so I feel more nervous about the field. I have fatigue issues (seen my primary and a sleep specialist it didnât really help.) I just hope I can handle it.
Iâm not sure if I should take a gap year but I know employers like experience.
Don't be nervous! Yes, employers love experience. If you feel any uncertainty, a gap year where you do internships and jobs related to the field of Social Work can help you to find your passions and make the best decision for YOU!
Mind your Society Yes and I read that when someone is looking for a BSW position it wonât be titled as BSW social worker ect. Iâll have to figure out how to word it.
Iâm also anxious that I am not intelligent and healthy enough to enter this field.
Whatâs the market like for school social workers?
C. Hello. Iâm not actually sure. Neither of us does school social work. But I think itâs pretty good, depending on where.
What is Macro- Social work?
The thought of being boxed-in is scary and I just want to have a variety so I donât get burned-out
Mare Do you think you will get a Masters in education?
she already did actually!
Hey! Yes, I earned my M.Ed in 2018 and Iâm currently working in administration as an Academic Dean
