How to Install Rough Country Leveling Springs on a Ford Ranger Part 2

- So it turns out I sorta botched that first spring I installed on the truck. It didn't look quite right at the time, but I thought maybe it just needed to settle or something. The truck ran fine; no weird noises or anything. But a viewer on my first video confirmed that one of the springs wasn't seated correctly.
I'm not too proud to admit I was wrong. It's part of the learning process. This was also a great opportunity to try out some new tools I picked up.
This video is just an update to the first one. Most everything else in the original video is good to go. Watch this video first, and then go back to Part 1: • How to Install Rough C...

I’m redoing a 97 ranger and these videos are extremely helpful
awesome! glad i could help!
In the same boat here, with my 97.
Just done this on my 97 ranger thanks for the help
Working on a 95 ranger and you Sir have save me tons of money with these videos. You got yourself a new subscriber 👍
awesome thanks!!! got a bunch of new videos planned so stay tuned!
Thanks for posting the update… im getting ready to do a 95 and this is super helpful!
Awesome! Glad you found it helpful!
Great to-the-point video. Subbed.
Thankyou Buddy . Good video and talk
Thanks this videos are very helpful for me.
Awesome! Glad you find them helpful!
Great video btw!!
Thanks!
I found I could use an impact gun on the drivers side because there was room to snake the socket and extensions down from the top. 1994 ranger, same color!
nice! I found driverside to be more roomy for sure.
I subscribe brother I have a 94 ranger I like your videos👍
Finally a video of the suspension type I have.
Did you ever figure out witch shock would fit the best!
Thanks!
not yet. it’s on my list. haha

@@forreststump11 I was always kind of a hater on shocks that weren't Bilstein, Fox, or King.. but maybe I'll try them just for fun. They're not too pricy... Thanks!
@@rayregnogarage I was always a fan of Heckethorne, but someone must have bought them out. Dont know if the rough country are any good, but like you said..the price is right and they're made for the 1.5-2 inch coil springs. I tried rancho years ago on my fullsize bronco and pulled them several months later as I thought they were junk. ran kyb on a ford sedan but never a truck. anyway, stay safe and keep posting good videos.
@@forreststump11 Never even heard of Heckethorne til you mentioned them.. this is what I found: hellcreeksuspensions.com/shocks/Nitro_Shocks.aspx
I hope uou still answer questions. Did you have problems with camber after lifting the front? If so were you able to correct with just an alignment
I never got the truck aligned. haha.
Love the videos but please use a ratchet and only use a torque wrench for the final torque! Also where’s a good place to get a nice pre runner type bumper with skid plate? Just getting into it with my 98 ranger
I normally hand torque the bolts, then ratchet, then torque... unless it’s really loose and i’m too lazy to switch. haha.
any local fab shop can do it.
So I am very interested in what shock you're going with.
I have a RWD 1995 Ranger XLT Supercab that I am going to purchase either the RC 1.5 inch leveling coil or the Skyjacker 1.5-2.0 inch leveling coil. Both say that the OEM style shocks should work and I was about to pull the trigger on the Bilstein 4600s until I saw your video. They acted as a bump stop? I reached out to Bilstein but they said for a 2.0 inch lift they don't offer a shock length that is suitable to that application.
I have a "similiar" plan but she's currently my DD, I off-road her 80-20 (mainly flat trails, beach dunes, and baja dirt roads). Coil, shock, radius arm bushings and rest of suspension bushings is the current plan.
Thoughts on axle pivot drop brackets?
Not a fan of drop bracket lifts. I haven’t done much research yet but I was going to look into some Bilstein 5100s. The 4600 is for stock height trucks
@@rayregnogarage I thought some 5100s would go good with this spring, that's weird Bilstein didn't recommend them though
@@supergreatairgunreviews Wow you talked to Bilstein directly?
@@rayregnogarage No I didn't, thought Rey did, unless I misunderstood his message. I just tried searching though and doesn't look like bilstein sells/recommends any 5100 shocks for ranger smaller than 4" lift spring. Saw 5100 recommended for 4" lift springs and another 5100 shock recommended for 6" springs
@RAYREGNO.. Have you replaced the stock shocks yet. I seen in the comments that you hadn't 6 months ago, but wanted to see if you had by now and which ones you decided on. Looking to do this same thing on my 94.
I did. I got these: amzn.to/3q8kmuz
Stock length Bilsteins. I started editing the video but got a new job and have been super busy. haha. Might post in a month or two. lol. But ya. get these. Two tips: use some sort of rubber safe lube on the bottom bushing and don't use impact tools when you install. Read not to do that AFTER I did that. haha. Good luck!
@@rayregnogarage, you'd mentioned wanting to go a little longer than stick length. Is there a reason why you decided to stick with the stock length on new shocks?
Because the longer shock is for 4” lift or more. You could probably try the rough country that’s made for 2” of lift but i prefer the bilstein.
Great videos I just bought. A 97 that I’m just ordered this kit along with shocks is there a benefit from order 2-6 shocks rather than 0-2. For travel
I’m not sure what you mean by 2-6 vs 0-2. I’m still running the factory shocks and it’s been fine. the shock is short though. def limits the droop by a couple inches
@@rayregnogarage thanks for the reply. That was a bad example I didn’t explain it very well. So when leveling with this kit it is I deal to get a shock that matches the travel of 0 to 2 inches.. Is there a benefit using a shock that is intended for a 4 “ lift for example
oh gotcha. i think a 4” lift shock would be too long.
@@rayregnogarage I see. I wasn’t sure if it was something that could be done. Especially with getting a bit more travel removing the sway bars If the bit of extra shock would be advantageous.
Great vids keep up the solid. Work. Ps technically mine isn’t a “ranger” it’s a 97 Mazda B4000 4.0 4x4.
You could try! I just haven’t really bothered. The whole front suspension and steering need a refresh. It rides like junk on the freeway. crazy sketchy. I figured it was just because it has beams...but the new-to-me van I just got has beams and it rides great. I think all the bearings and bushings and such are just completely trashed. I may just bite the bullet and long travel it. was gonna try and keep it a budget rig...but i honestly don’t really enjoy driving it. and i miss going fast in the dirt. we will see.
Whats the torque spec?
Bro I already knew that about the box end wrench you could easily use a ratchet wrench too lol I need to know about that insane camber shown after install
I didn’t have issue with camber. I never even got it aligned. although i did mess with toe a little.
I got a 2wd 97 ranger with the rough country 1.5 inch springs and 1.5 inch shocks, do you think they’ll clear 31x10.5’s with a -44 offset?
Maybe... i’m not sure. Not too familiar with the i beam 2wds
@@rayregnogarage thanks for the reply, it it were to rub what tool do you recommend for some trimming?
Watch my fender trimming video
My 95 clears 31s on stock height, no trimming needed just make sure the bumper is on right with no gaps and you should be good
Hey what sizes of tires are you put on your truck ?
33 12.5 15
Great video bro! i'm interested in doing this, What size shocks should i get?
I haven't figured that part out yet, actually. It's on my list to do in the next month or so... so stay tuned! I'll do a video on it.
I'm still running the 26 year old factory shock! haha.
@@rayregnogarage ah ok cool! I did some digging and I’m gonna go ahead and try these www.roughcountry.com/premium-n3-shock-absorbers-23244f.html
@@Michaelvmjr Nice! I've never run Rough Country shocks. i was gonna cycle the suspension to measure the travel and get the appropriate length Bilstein. Lemme know how you like them!
@@rayregnogarage yeah I’ll let you know. I will definitely stay tuned bro!
What are the specs for the tightness
Spring retainer nut ========== 70 to 100
What's better about the coil vs spacer. Poor ride?
New springs will improve the ride of the truck... especially if your old springs are tired and saggy. All the spacer does is add lift. It doesn't do anything for the ride quality and you can potentially lose suspension travel. Fine if you're just doing it for looks, but if you're actually going to drive the truck off road, the coils are the way to go.
I installed these on my 86 bronco ll and the driver side rubs a little bit, it squeaks when you hit bumps ☹️
is the spring seated correctly?
or what is rubbing on what?
@@rayregnogarage it definitely looks like it's correct. It's rubbing on the spring housing towards the frame.
@@SineMaculainteresting. do you know if maybe your truck has been in an accident. Send me a picture of it on instagram @rayregnogarage
What springs are you upgrading to?

there’s a link there for the fronts, too

What shocks did you put on it?
still has the dead factory shocks that are probably 25 years old. hahaha. I'm waiting to do the shocks in the back because I want to do a new spring pack. I'll determine the shock travel then... for the front.. probably just gonna get som bilstein 5100s
@@rayregnogarage would u recomend the ranchos rs9000xl?
@@HairoGonzalezADT Im probably gonna run a Bilstein shock once i figure out what size will work
@@rayregnogarage Did you ever get bilstein 5100s for it? I got a 94 ranger and 96 f150. I think the 5100s they recommend a 4" lift but you gotta either run drop brackets or cut and turn the beams. I've always wondered if you could just slam some 5100s in there anyways with just the 2" lift haha
@@trashman1694 Still rockin the factory shocks. Lol. I think for now I'm just gonna do the Bilstein factory length shocks. I don't know this for sure, but if you're gonna try running a longer shock make sure it will compress all the way to match your truck's compression. If/when I redo the beams, I'm gonna get the Solo long travel extended beams.. in which case I'll be getting coilovers.
Do you remember what the torque spec was?
I don’t remember. so I just googled it. 70-100 ft lbs
for the coil retainer nut, yes?
